Listener comments!

  11:11pm
superduper!:

NICE background!
  11:12pm
Amanda:

I know! I laughed out loud when I saw it. And I have to get deeper into Huey Lewis's early work, clearly.
  11:13pm
efd:

hah... yeah, I have a mental block that Huey Smith <> Huey Lewis for some reason.
  11:18pm
E.L.:

Holy hypno-background!

Merry Christmas to you, E.F.D., and all the late night listeners! Best of the best for the holidays!
  11:23pm
Amanda:

That was a NICE Run Rudolph Run.

Happy hols E.L.! I just saw a photo of your cats sniffing around a recycling bin overflowing with beer bottles.
  11:23pm
tramshed:

Last years request is much win good sir.
  11:26pm
E.L.:

Hey Amanda! Merry, merry!

That's definitely my cat. He parties hard.
  11:27pm
john:

Thought I heard the dulcet tones of Kurtis Blow from the next room. Don't think I've heard this all season. And merry happy everybody!
  11:29pm
Therese:

must you bring that up?
  11:30pm
john:

Actually it was kind of endearing.
  11:40pm
efd:

Therese, in all sincerity I was very impressed with how smoothly you handled that situation, especially on just your second or third show.

Here's some Monster Magnet for you.
  11:41pm
efd:

E.L., where can we view this cat photo??
  11:42pm
Therese:

Aww, thanks!

And nothing says Christmas in Jersey like Monster Magnet.
  11:46pm
efd:

I know this is not a very Christmas-y sentiment, but I am going to murder these CD players before the night is over.
  11:48pm
celebrity neighbor:

For a second there I thought it was four minutes thirty three seconds by John Cage
  11:50pm
efd:

at the rate things are going it might come to that!
  11:55pm
E.L.:

Oop! Sorry I spaced out. You can see my party cats at www.postmodernfrog.blogspot.com. I'm writing addresses for Christmas cards while I'm listening. Nothing like waiting till the last minute!

Have you heard the Air Force Christmas PSAs from yule blog, EFD? I thought of you when I found those.
  11:58pm
john:

As long as you're talking baseball, on a sad note, RIP Dock Ellis. Pitched a no-hitter on acid, wrote a book with future poet laureate Donald Hall, latterly worked as substance abuse counselor and by all accounts a standup guy.
  12:00am
E.L.:

Everybody Knows the Clause is turning into an EFD tradition! I luv it!
  12:01am
efd:

E.L., damn straight!!

John, hear hear on Dock Ellis. There was a nice feature on him last night on the Rachel Maddow show.
Plus, when you say his last name and first initial you get...
  12:03am
Michael K.:

THaNX for representing the Hanson X-mas SpiRit!!
They even did a charles brown song...
  12:04am
superduper!:

hanson could teach those jonas boys a thing or two.
  12:05am
efd:

darn tootin', superduper!

Hi Michael! Nice to see you here!
  12:07am
E.L.:

Any chance of hearing from another Davies? I've been itchin' to hear Father Christmas by the Kinks.
  12:08am
celebrity neighbor:

Plus one on Dock Ellis. He would have made north of $100 million if he played today (he won twenty games twice if I recall and won more than fifteen almost every year in his prime).
How about Slade's Xmas tune (the best of the lot in my opinion)?
  12:08am
john:

Thanks for the tip, I'll go dig up the Rachel Maddow feature on Ellis, D. Bucs were consistently the coolest team in baseball through the 70s, though my current quest to get Dave Parker into the Hall of Fame is doomed to failure. At least none of the voters I know buy my arguments.
  12:11am
efd:

i've got the slade song right here, C.N.

E.L., I don't know why I don't have that Kinks single with me - I know I have it at home! grr... anyone know if it was a bonus track on any CD reissue?
  12:13am
john:

Velvel reissue of Misfits.
  12:13am
therese:

I tore the library apart looking for that Kinks song on Friday. No luck.
  12:15am
E.L.:

Thanks for looking anyway! I think it was on Misfits.
  12:27am
john:

I'd still vote for Wizzard on the glam-ish front, though Lord knows you can't spend a day in London at this time of year without hearing it forty-seven times.
  12:27am
efd:

wow, Father Christmas isn't even in the MP3 library! damn... Therese, I assume you checked for the 7"?
  12:27am
celebrity neighbor:

Rock on EFD. Rock on Noddy!
  12:28am
celebrity neighbor:

But John, I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day is the best xmas tune ever--and are you saying you burned out on it hearing it forty times a day during the Xmas season?
  12:30am
Samthesnowman:

Dave Davies used to do "Father Christmas" in his live shows...perhaps there's a version on one of his 1990s/2000s comps or live albums?
  12:31am
Therese:

I was running short on time, so I didn't check for the 7"- I did check the Kinks LPs, CDs and MP3s though- no Father Christmas.

Also, I love Dolly Parton.
  12:34am
john:

Father Christmas is really truly on the reissue of Misfits. Srsly. And CN-- I was in London last month for a week and in fact heard IWICBCE three hundred twenty-nine times. Totally the best Xmas rock song ever. I'd still trade 'em all for a decent choir singing In The Bleak Midwinter (the Darke setting, not Holst).
  12:36am
Celebrity Neighbor:

Sam you're right I think--I am pretty sure Father Christmas is on that Dave Davies album recorded at the Bottom Line
  12:37am
efd:

the problem is that the library is bereft of that Misfits reissue.
  12:38am
E.L.:

Don't stress out about it, for real! Now I know what to get WFMU for Christmas.
  12:44am
efd:

oh, i'm stressing out. you can't stop me!
  12:49am
E.L.:

Something to look forward to next year.
  12:51am
efd:

don't give up hope so fast, Mr. E.L. The WFMU community is a generous one.
  12:51am
john:

Dion. Greatest. Rock Vocalist. Ever.
  12:52am
efd:

i'm not sure i can express teh awesome of this song
  12:54am
E.L.:

IT'S A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE!!!!

THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!!
  12:58am
efd:

first time in the history of online playlists that the Kinks' version of Father Christmas has been played on WFMU. Although I bet Glen Jones has played it.

I'll let the sender choose to reveal him/herself or not...
  1:03am
Sybil:

Yup, Glen Jones always plays that one. Or usually. Imagine, I can't recall if he did this past Sunday or not.
  1:04am
Amanda:

Were you talking about Temple of the Dog, maybe? That "I'm Going "Hungry" song?
  1:04am
dave:

is the horrific grunge band you're thinking of temple of the dog?
  1:04am
dave:

GAH TOO LATE
  1:06am
efd:

THAT'S IT!! I knew I could count on you.
  1:07am
Amanda:

Gridlock! 's ok, Dave!

I'm so happy to hear Christmas Wrapping, seriously.
  1:08am
dave:

and again, amanda and i are in complete agreement.
  1:09am
mary:

Yes, the Waitresses sound really ...fun.
I saw them sing this live and it was...fun. really.
  1:10am
Amanda:

Dave, you mean you want to hear No Use For A Name's pop-punk cover of Fairytale of New York too?

That, or Dominick the Donkey.
  1:10am
David in Morris Cty:

If you can, my favorite Holiday song...Irwin's version of Santa is coming to town
  1:10am
Sybil:

The line "the world's smallest turkey" always makes me think of the dinner scene in Eraserhead.
  1:13am
Sybil:

OK, my browser is not updating comments for some reason. So I'm late catching this. BUT: Amanda, "No Use For A Name's pop-punk cover of Fairytale of New York " - if this exists, I *must* hear it!!!
  1:14am
dave:

i think this is the third distinct version of 'donde esta santa claus' i've heard in the past two days. and every single one makes me go "OLÉ! OLÉ! OLÉ!"
  1:15am
efd:

there's a Charo version around here somewhere, but you can't beat the Augie Rios original!
  1:16am
David in Morris Cty:

Yessssssss! Cool
  1:17am
efd:

as for "Fairytale of New York," I am probably the only person in the world who isn't really crazy for that song.
  1:17am
john:

It had me at "on Pedro." Of course I was doing something else at the time, so I may have made that all up.
  1:19am
Sybil:

Oh, I love Irwin.

There. I said it.
  1:19am
Amanda:

Yep, I had a feeling... which is why I couched the request in pseudo-sarcasm

(Sybil -- that cover does exist, though!)
  1:28am
Sybil:

Re: Fairytale of New York: I like that Glen plays it every year at this time of year. When it finally comes on during his show I get choked up, every time. Just because it's Jonesy.

But it wouldn't work here. Context is everything. Here, "Donde esta santa claus" chokes me up.

But I still must hear this cover. I've found a youtube link. For later.

Latkes with salmon roe, anyone?
  1:30am
dave:

not only does the cover exist, it can be found in all its chunka-chunka-here-comes-the-4:15-pop-punk-express-a-rumblin'-down-the-tracks accordion-free goodness on your local youtubes.

with sparklers, no less.

... as can a live version of the original, complete with dubious hair, teeth, banjos, and sunglasses.
  1:31am
john:

Oh, there's always room to hear Roy once more. Or forty-seven times if I were still in England.
  1:31am
Gleb:

Hello from Russia!
In west of Russia now 9:30 AM
After 30 min I'm will go to college :)
Bye-bye, best greetings
  1:34am
efd:

hi Gleb! thanks for listening and commenting!
  1:34am
Sybil:

Hey Gleb, I hope we've put you in the studying mood!
  1:36am
Sybil:

I've just realized that I have earrings exactly like this background pattern! How cool is that!
  1:37am
dave:

that sort of puts the lie to the claim that every snowflake is unique.
  1:39am
efd:

haha Sybil, that's awesome.

Very funny, Dave.
  1:41am
Amanda:

Haha! This is my fave Joe McG pick of this year.
  1:46am
john:

Vote for ultimate punkish Xmas record--The Greedies' A Merry Jingle, w/Cook and Jones from the Sex Pistols plus, of all people, Phil Lynott and Scott Gorham of Thin LIzzy. Jingle Bells and We Wish You A Merry Christmas muddled together. What a grand mess!
  1:49am
john:

  1:50am
Joe:

I WAS JUST gonna ask you to play this.

I've been obsessed with it all week. Go Greg Lake!

Thanks Ev, great show.
  1:51am
efd:

the surface noise alone is enough to make a grown man cry...
  1:51am
Sybil:

OK, now I'm choked up for serious real.
  1:52am
Joe:

I was gonna say.. the seven inch is just taking me back to sitting in front of my christmas tree with my dad's turntable in front of me.

Fuck, man. And I've been drinking eggnog and wrapping presents...
  1:54am
john:

Brilliant! Talk about Christmas miracles!
  1:55am
efd:

you earned it, John!
  1:58am
efd:

thanks for staying up late, everyone! safe and happy holidays to all!!
  1:58am
john:

Thanks!

Ahh, the Laryngitis Album. Always had a soft spot for it anyway.
  1:59am
Amanda:

Merry holidays, EFD community!
  2:00am
Joe:

Merry Funksmass to all, and to all a good Funk.
