Listener comments!

  11:05pm
Sybil:

Good penultimate evening of 2008!
  11:06pm
C:

Luckily, Local H put out one of the best releases of 2008, "12 Angry Months."
  11:07pm
Sybil:

Ah, Des Jeunes Gens Modernes. Will we also get some Italian Disco tonight?
  11:07pm
efd:

haha... hi, everyone! Excellent use of "penultimate," Sybil!
  11:09pm
Joe:

For years and years I thought "penultimate" meant "the last"... oh, the boundless depths of ignorance.
  11:09pm
efd:

you'll have to settle for Nigerian disco... the Italo-Disco comp wasn't in the top 10, believe it or not.
  11:11pm
annabelle clark:

evan---hny,,,best wishes,,,have fun!!!peace
  11:12pm
Sybil:

A friend once got yelled at for using "antepenultimate". It's a risky business.
  11:13pm
Sybil:

I do like the Best VA Compilations of 2008 concept.

Oh, good, annabelle's here!
  11:13pm
Joe:

If only I had known that word yesterday... my friends would have yet another reason to hate me.
  11:13pm
annabelle c.:

efd have any wild plans for new years?
  11:14pm
Jessica:

That, right there, was the funk.
Glad I got here in time!
  11:15pm
efd:

i swear, these year-end shows are the most stressful shows if the year, like clockwork, no matter what i do to try to get ahead of it.
  11:16pm
efd:

if anyone can scrounge up an mp3 from the Van Duren CD "are you serious" that came out this year i would be eternally grateful.
  11:16pm
randy in NC (on LI):

efd- BTW I have heard that the dBs are 2 tunes away from a new CD.
  11:18pm
Jessica:

I so, so want to start using antepenultimate in everyday conversation, for at least the next 7 days, but really this week is all about declarations of LAST. No more. Out with that bleep, and in with the eyes-closed leaps into new.
But still, what a beautiful word.
  11:20pm
Laurie:

I had a hard enough time filling out top threes for the indie pop/tweenet poll. By the way, I was right about 10 months ago. "Tiger Phone Card" by Dengue Fever is the best song of 2008.
  11:24pm
C:

I like Dengue Fever, but don't the lyrics to "Tiger Phone Card" make you cringe just a little?
  11:24pm
Jessica:

You know it's a party, when EFD drops a g.
  11:25pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

Wow--this is slamming!
  11:26pm
Sybil:

OK, it will be so extra special to hear EFD say "countin' down the hits" a few more times.
  11:27pm
Laurie:

C: No. I sing along every time. EVERY TIME.
  11:29pm
Jessica:

Tiger Phone Card's product placement fu is pretty cringe-worthy. Yet somehow Ambien seems kinda sexy, now.
  11:29pm
Joe:

this song makes me FEEL ALRIGHT.

no seriously
  11:43pm
john:

Hey folks! I think nearly everyone who's been in the car with this year has heard Memphis 70 by now. And thanks for reminding me that I have to pick up that Titan comp!
  11:51pm
john:

For what it's worth, btw, this was probably my fave rave comp of the year too. The one with all the Philly hits was great too, but no surprises on that one.
  11:56pm
efd:

just got a Van Duren track, thanks all for your help
  11:58pm
Paul, The Pride of Staten Island:

Hey Facebook friend! I'm with you on the Nothing People album. It made my top ten as well. And you're playing the best soon from it too! Kudos to you, EFD!
  11:58pm
Joe:

Somebody beat me to it? Bastards.
  11:58pm
speccy:

congrats on making it thru the comps! pretty great -- don't run out of time!
  12:00am
annabelle clark:

g'nite all best wishes & hny!!
  12:02am
efd:

goodnight and happy new year to you, Annabelle!

Don't jinx me, speccy!!

Hi Paul, hi John, hi Joe! did I miss anyone?
  12:02am
efd:

oh! hi Laurie and Jessica! thanks all for listening/commenting!
  12:08am
efd:

speccy, my problem is I always think i'm going to have time leftover!

In fact, I'm thinking that even now...
  12:09am
Sybil:

If you have time left over... You can play "Turkey So Fine"!!!

Unless of course...
  12:10am
Sybil:

Refuge in Genre is a perfect title. I must steal it.
  12:17am
efd:

Sybil, you mean play it repeatedly until 2am? Excellent idea!
  12:19am
Sybil:

fubar over you... cute lepers... the hits just keep on coming!
  12:24am
speccy:

I'm sure you could fill an extra 20 minutes with chatter if you *really* needed. A long distance dedication Casey Kasem style.
  12:26am
Sybil:

We could do hot stove chat.

OOH OOH! I have to show you the really cool Hanukah present I got in lieu of gelt. (It's a recession, folks.) Now where did I put that scanner?
  12:27am
Spoony:

Great show tonight. Don't sweat the time, just break the key off in the studio door. (Unless there isn't much air available.) Great to hear some Cute Lepers.
  12:32am
efd:

thanks, Twitter pal Spoony! Sybil, fire up that scanner!
  12:35am
Joe:

BUT WHAT'S NUMBER ONE?!

The suspense is literally killing me, literally. This is the first time I've ever wanted a fallen leaves song to -end-
  12:36am
efd:

this is *exactly* why I didn't publish that blog post before my show.
  12:37am
Joe:

damn you, Davies
  12:38am
Paul, The Pride of Staten Island:

Evan, you're LITERALLY killing Joe. You've got blood on your hands Mr, Davies!
  12:40am
Sybil:

OK, here's better than gelt. (I think the guy who gave it to me didn't appreciate what he had.)
http://tiny.cc/jqxQE
  12:40am
Joe:

Yeah man, now I'm figuratively dead and it's literally your fault.
  12:41am
Sybil:

SAY IT AIN'T SO, JOE!
  12:42am
Joe:

Wow, Sybil, thats totally awesome. And fitting, seeing how EFD's pick came straight out of LEFT FIELD. *rimshot*
  12:43am
Paul, The Pride of Staten Island:

Thomas Function! That was my number 1 as well! Well, sort of, as I didn't really rank my top ten. Nonetheless, we are simpatico, my friend.
  12:44am
efd:

omg Sybil, that is AMAZING!!
  12:49am
Spoony:

I'm routing for The Nerves. C'MON Nerves.
  12:50am
john:

I'm voting with Spoony. But I think 80% of my favorite records this year were reissues.
  12:51am
Sybil:

Sparks?

I'm not a betting woman, and a good thing it is.

And my #1 song of 2008 was Paper Planes, a sentimental favorite. There, I said it.
  12:52am
Sybil:

But I'm happy with nearly everything played tonight. Just sayin'.
  12:53am
Paul:

Thanks for playing the Lines. I haven't seen it on anyone's best reissue list which is a real goddamn shame. Great, great record.
  12:54am
efd:

y'know, John and Spoony, it seems like every year there's at least one album that I end up leaving off my list as more of an oversight than a reflection on its quality. This year, that (dis)honor falls to The Nerves, I'm sorry to say.
  12:57am
john:

Totally understandable. In the days when I did lists, I think I had more oversights than things that actually made it. That's what happens (at least to me) when you don't organize your CDs, kiddiwinks!
  12:57am
noah:

Keepin my Wed morning swell Evan!! Thanks!!! -Noah
  12:57am
C:

Not that anyone cares, but I think my favorites this year were the releases from the Pierced Arrows and Lambchop. I picked up the Wolverton Bros. one after hearing it last week or the week before on your show, Evan and it's great too. All in all, a great year in music.
  1:00am
Sybil:

lists are the pits. One always forgets something unforgettable.

I have reason to know.
  1:01am
john:

Guilty Pleasure Dept. For 40-somethings, Reissue Division: I feel it incumbent upon myself to confess spending a certain amount of money (and a lot more time) in 2008 on a variety of Alice Cooper reissues. Ahh, fifth grade...
  1:03am
Sybil:

I am SOOOO GLAD that you got the Van Duren thingy, it was worth it.
  1:04am
Spoony:

"Hanging on the telephone," so to speak. Ba dum-dum! It's been a good year for reissues and collections.
  1:06am
Sybil:

You do know that you only have 56 minutes left? (As I write)

I despair of ever hearing "turkey so fine" this year. I hope to hear it next year!
  1:08am
efd:

Hi Noah! Thanks for checking in. C, thanks for posting your faves of the year... anyone else? (Paul, I'll just refer to my list to see what yours is.)

Sybil, thanks for the time check! :)
  1:10am
Sybil:

A better than expected New Year to anyone who has dared to post here. Much joy to Joe, John, Laurie, Jessica, and anyone I've forgotten. And to EFD, may all your fondest dreams be realized, now and in the funture.
  1:11am
Paul:

Well, thus far, you've played 4 out of my top ten. If you (or anyone else is interested) you can check my blog:

http://theunblinkingear.blogspot.com/2008/12/what-was-great-in-2008.html

(I apologize if I'm being at all spammy)
  1:11am
Sybil:

I love "funture" so much I won't change it.
  1:11am
efd:

I'm guessing "funture" was a typo, but I like it! Thanks, Sybil, and the very same to you!!
  1:12am
Joe:

THE FUNTURE. It's like the future, but way more fun! Sybil, you are my #1 commenter this year.
  1:14am
Joe:

Actually, I'm lying, it's probably stingy d. But you're like, number 2 at the very least
  1:14am
Laurie:

Yes, Happy New Year to Evan, everyone at WFMU, and all of WFMU's listeners. Yay!
  1:14am
Sybil:

Sparks! I mean.I am forever happy.
  1:19am
efd:

ok, right about now i am starting to think i don't have enough time. O, how the worm turns.
  1:21am
efd:

... he says as he starts a 5-minute song.
  1:21am
john:

As long as we're still reissuing, a two-fer of favorites re-hit the street this year-The Impressions' This Is My Country and The Young Mods' Forgotten Story. And the too-brief collected works of the Shop Assistants.

Back at'cha, Sybil!
  1:21am
Sybil:

Joe,*STUFF*

Love ya.
  1:22am
Paul:

Evan, why don't you play the singles from 1 to 10 instead of 10 to 1? This way, if you run out of time, you'll only be cutting off the "lesser" singles.
  1:24am
efd:

Paul, interesting idea but I think my head would explode if I played the #1 song first.

I appreciate that you're trying to find a solution, though.
  1:25am
Joe:

Instead, we're getting expert-caliber drop-ins and fade-outs!

The man is a radio genius!

Of course, we all knew that already.
  1:26am
speccy:

hah hah stepping all over those vocals! JK
  1:26am
Michael from the Left Coast:

What--no Nerves reissue?
  1:27am
efd:

I know... see my earlier comment from 12:54.
  1:29am
Joe:

HELL yeah Percy P. That is WHAT IS UP.
  1:30am
Sybil:

EFD, You can do it!
  1:33am
Laurie:

PRIDE OF MIAMI
  1:34am
Noah:

Percee P, one of the few well deserved rappers to put out a full length this past year....wait, that was in 2007.
  1:40am
Paul:

You can do it, Evan!!
  1:40am
john:

Wow, that London Dirthole Company record sounded like Mark E. Smith fronting The Pretty Things, just as it should be. Rawk!
  1:49am
Joe:

Hah! Where was it hiding?

Oh man I'm so glad you found it.
  1:50am
efd:

it was sitting on top of the CD player in the record library. sheesh....
  1:54am
Laurie:

TURKEY SO FINE!!!
  1:55am
speccy:

Get on the hog with the Wawa PR team!
  1:55am
Joe:

Goddamn it, first Belock now you. This song has been stuck in my head since lunch, when it actually forced me to suspend work and go buy a sandwich.

Now I have to go make a snack.

The best thing about Hoagiefest for me, being too far north to actually participate, is that it got me to start listening to my old Nerfherder cds.
  1:56am
efd:

I am still using "Turkey So Fine" as my ringtone, 6 months later.
  2:00am
efd:

phew! just made it! (thanks to Marty McS. for yielding a couple of minutes)
  2:01am
Joe:

My resolution: to be as cool as an FMU DJ.

Great show, happy new years!
  8:54pm
mandrax:

Just like you (Evan) I was also 16 when the Introducing Sparks album came out. I'll never forget seeing them for the first time in "Rollercoaster" (in Sensurround, of course!) Keep up the AWESOME work, Ev!
  1:49pm
MikeSin:

I'm risking my source of income to listen to this fine archive at the moment (I guess that "streaming media" block/filter here at work expired in 2008?!). Anyway, a fine year-end wrap-up show. Few were happier than me to see that first Blue Ash LP finally get properly reissued on CD. Have you ever heard the second LP, "Front Page News" that was released in the late '70s on the Playboy (!) label? Vastly inferior with too many horn overdubds... IMHO. Happy new year to you!
