	10:07am Lewis: You are not alone - I agree especially with small labels and living artists. I also try to support my local independent music store (which has unparalleled service and can get all kinds of off the wall stuff I might add!)

	10:09am mudflap: I agree with you on downloading Trouble! I download to get a taste of new music- if I like it I buy the CD. When Napster came out my music purchases went up about 500%. I also download music I already own, as it's easier for me than ripping my CD's to get them in an MP3 player.
	10:09am Mac: Hi Liz: I try to support my local 'record' shop. I even ask for special orders, but recently I have been buying stuff on itunes as it is the only way I can get the imports I want. I do notice the poor sound quality from itunes, but i am stuck. As far as copying, I do do mix CDs for friends who would never hear this music otherwise (except, maybe, on FMU).

	10:18am Cecile: I remember being really, really stoned at the one Detroit Cramps show I went to in '83 and it being one of the very best shows I ever saw. In fact, iirc WFMU's own Rob Weisberg was there. I missed them the following year because I think I had alcohol poisoning. Or at least it felt like it. I heard Lux took off his pants. Damn.

	10:22am dale: re: turntable. If you already have a turntable and amp or receiver just go to Radio Shack and get a patch cable. It's two RCA plugs into an 1/8 inch stereo plug. There's free software at Version Tracker.com. The more expensive ION turntable with the built in burner would be the easiest way to go, though

	10:22am BSI: I caught the Cramps/Butthole Surfers/Dead Milkmen show at Warner Theater (DC) ... new years eve, 1988 or 89... Surfers had the whole multi-films & Gibby's lighter-fluid/hi-hat explosions thing, Cramps were fiercely awesome... Many of us still have delightful scars from that show.

	10:27am Vivian: I saw the Cramps in Atlanta 94? 93? I remember Lux in latex & stilletos, perched on top of the speakers. A guy dancing next to me vomited, turned to me, shrugged his shoulders and continued to dance. Great show.
	10:28am Doug from DC: GP, I got the Numark TT-USB, and am not thrilled with it. I found that the codec it comes with doesn't support control of the input gain. If you connect to it with Audacity, the control for this is disabled. Instead, there's a little black knob labeled "gain" on the bottom of the unit, next to the USB port. And no mention of this in the manual. The knob does work, with some patience. I like Dale's suggestion.
	10:29am hazmania: Lux would usually be down to his heels and g-string by the fifth song here ('cause it's hot) in Dallas. Saw a more "gentle" BHS show this winter in Dallas - no pyrotechnics and Gibby's parents seated in the balcony. I guess you can't go home again!
	10:29am Lucky: It's a sticky issue. I can really see how downloading provides access to music that may, otherwise, never be reissued. At the same time, sites providing music for free limit the ability for a CD reissue to break even. Personally, I would prefer to have the CD, but I think I would also rather hear certain music than never have the chance to. Then there is the moral labyrith of who's really making money (ie: ESP Records). Oy! But the artist (or their descendants) should get paid. I also hate how its effecting retailers. I'm sad to see indy record stores go down. It's not right.
	10:30am zoot: For Vinyl to MP3 or CD, Griffin Technologies makes a little $35 doodad called the iMic. Hook it up to your amplifier and turntable via RCA jacks, and you're all set. I've been converting for quite a few years. It's quel swell.

	10:33am hazmania: Pro-ject makes a true audiophile USB turntable (3 bills.) I personally use my old turntable with ARTcessories USB Phono Plus interface. It does everything (including line level for cassettes and a headphone amp) for well under a hundred if you shop a little.
	10:34am BSI: hazmania: that sounds desperately sad, somehow... they were doing Locust Abortion Technician material at that BHS/Cramps show, & the lighter-fluid/hi-hat thing was seriously freaking out the folks at the Warner, looking at these old tapestries over the stage that were rather flammable...

	10:35am Carmichael: Good morning, all. Following the Lux Interior convo, I hung out with them both several times back in '70s, and saw them again about 7 months ago playing here in Sacramento. We met at a funky old record store run by an old guy named Ed that knew every single song from every single genre. He was amazing. You can't play enough Cramps.

	10:37am Doug in DC: I saw the Cramps at Ontario Theatre in DC back in 1980. It was crazy, Lux was shirtless in black leather pants, running around the stage, moaning and making noises into a mic he had in his mouth.
	10:38am hazmania: BSI - I think all indoor pyrotechnics are now banned. They did use them at a free outdoor show I saw five years ago. They did keep the three big video screens so it wasn't at all bad. Just not the same. I have seen them consistantly as a local band since 84.

	10:45am zoot: It's easy to do an entire album, just remember to separate the tracks. Best not to use the noise reduction; you'll lose some fidelity and that vinyl feel.
	10:46am dc pat: Ah, that's the problem==whole album. It's a pain in the ass tomake separate files out of each tune. That's why I've only done 2 LPs so far.
	10:48am zoot: I've done about 300 albums. Just read a good book and listen to the album whilst recording.
	10:49am hazmania: That's why I like Spin It Again so much. It gets the tracks split in 10 seconds and is spot on 90% of the time. You just have to move the markers to get it perfect. You're done in less than 2 minutes
	10:49am Doug from DC: Audacity lets you insert track labels and run a single export that creates all the tracks as separate files using the label name. The interface is a little clunky, but I've gotten used to it.

	10:53am Carmichael: I've had a program for years called CD Recorder. I bought it at Best Buy for under $20. I record whole album sides, and it has an adjustable feature that will find every pause between sounds. You can choose to mark or delete each pause. It works great. I have my Technics SL Q2 fully automatic direct drive quartz lock turntable that I bought in 1979, and I use an old Radio Shack amp that I've had even longer. Works great for me.
	10:55am Parq: I was just gonna ask you about Audacity, Annie. I'm still game to give it a try, although I find that the Mac versions of audio freeware are less facile than their PC equivalents (over to you, Ike).

My dad always did that with me, and I know that it couldn't have been easy for him sometimes. Once, we were in the car and I had Terre T's show on. The kid was silent for a bit, gazing at the radio thoughtfully. After a minute or so, she reached over and turned up the volume. That's my girl!

	12:21pm Jeff from Knowzy: Re: Woot's USB turntable offer You get what you pay for. It is about as cheesy as they come. The Ion iPTUSB has a ceramic cartridge with is very rough on your vinyl and has a narrower frequency response than a magnetic cartridge. A plastic platter and no anti-skate adjustment round out the package. As Dale suggested, any analog turntable can become a USB turntable fairly easily. 	10:09am mudflap: I agree with you on downloading Trouble! I download to get a taste of new music- if I like it I buy the CD. When Napster came out my music purchases went up about 500%. I also download music I already own, as it's easier for me than ripping my CD's to get them in an MP3 player.
	10:09am Mac: Hi Liz: I try to support my local 'record' shop. I even ask for special orders, but recently I have been buying stuff on itunes as it is the only way I can get the imports I want. I do notice the poor sound quality from itunes, but i am stuck. As far as copying, I do do mix CDs for friends who would never hear this music otherwise (except, maybe, on FMU).

	10:22am dale: re: turntable. If you already have a turntable and amp or receiver just go to Radio Shack and get a patch cable. It's two RCA plugs into an 1/8 inch stereo plug. There's free software at Version Tracker.com. The more expensive ION turntable with the built in burner would be the easiest way to go, though

	10:22am BSI: I caught the Cramps/Butthole Surfers/Dead Milkmen show at Warner Theater (DC) ... new years eve, 1988 or 89... Surfers had the whole multi-films & Gibby's lighter-fluid/hi-hat explosions thing, Cramps were fiercely awesome... Many of us still have delightful scars from that show.

	10:28am Doug from DC: GP, I got the Numark TT-USB, and am not thrilled with it. I found that the codec it comes with doesn't support control of the input gain. If you connect to it with Audacity, the control for this is disabled. Instead, there's a little black knob labeled "gain" on the bottom of the unit, next to the USB port. And no mention of this in the manual. The knob does work, with some patience. I like Dale's suggestion.
	10:29am hazmania: Lux would usually be down to his heels and g-string by the fifth song here ('cause it's hot) in Dallas. Saw a more "gentle" BHS show this winter in Dallas - no pyrotechnics and Gibby's parents seated in the balcony. I guess you can't go home again!
	10:29am Lucky: It's a sticky issue. I can really see how downloading provides access to music that may, otherwise, never be reissued. At the same time, sites providing music for free limit the ability for a CD reissue to break even. Personally, I would prefer to have the CD, but I think I would also rather hear certain music than never have the chance to. Then there is the moral labyrith of who's really making money (ie: ESP Records). Oy! But the artist (or their descendants) should get paid. I also hate how its effecting retailers. I'm sad to see indy record stores go down. It's not right.
	10:30am zoot: For Vinyl to MP3 or CD, Griffin Technologies makes a little $35 doodad called the iMic. Hook it up to your amplifier and turntable via RCA jacks, and you're all set. I've been converting for quite a few years. It's quel swell.

	10:33am hazmania: Pro-ject makes a true audiophile USB turntable (3 bills.) I personally use my old turntable with ARTcessories USB Phono Plus interface. It does everything (including line level for cassettes and a headphone amp) for well under a hundred if you shop a little.

We met at a funky old record store run by an old guy named Ed that knew every single song from every single genre. He was amazing. You can't play enough Cramps.

	10:49am hazmania: That's why I like Spin It Again so much. It gets the tracks split in 10 seconds and is spot on 90% of the time. You just have to move the markers to get it perfect. You're done in less than 2 minutes

	10:53am Carmichael: I've had a program for years called CD Recorder. I bought it at Best Buy for under $20. I record whole album sides, and it has an adjustable feature that will find every pause between sounds. You can choose to mark or delete each pause. It works great. I have my Technics SL Q2 fully automatic direct drive quartz lock turntable that I bought in 1979, and I use an old Radio Shack amp that I've had even longer. Works great for me.

My dad always did that with me, and I know that it couldn't have been easy for him sometimes. Once, we were in the car and I had Terre T's show on. The Ion iPTUSB has a ceramic cartridge with is very rough on your vinyl and has a narrower frequency response than a magnetic cartridge. A plastic platter and no anti-skate adjustment round out the package. As Dale suggested, any analog turntable can become a USB turntable fairly easily.
