A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Trouble, I completely agree. I won't let people copy my cd's and I won't copy theirs, especially for the small labels as you say. Like Big Blood's cd.

You are not alone - I agree especially with small labels and living artists.

I also try to support my local independent music store (which has unparalleled service and can get all kinds of off the wall stuff I might add!)

mudflap:

I agree with you on downloading Trouble! I download to get a taste of new music- if I like it I buy the CD. When Napster came out my music purchases went up about 500%. I also download music I already own, as it's easier for me than ripping my CD's to get them in an MP3 player.
  10:09am
Mac:

Hi Liz:
I try to support my local 'record' shop. I even ask for special orders, but recently I have been buying stuff on itunes as it is the only way I can get the imports I want. I do notice the poor sound quality from itunes, but i am stuck. As far as copying, I do do mix CDs for friends who would never hear this music otherwise (except, maybe, on FMU).
  10:09am
Eddy J:

I did, and I still work at a Library

Anyone here try those USB turntables that allow you to convert vinyl to MP3? Woot:

Annie you are a sweetheart! You know someone - you got connectsions? Wow... yes - we should talk or something. I have to run to a meeting now and won't be back beofre this show is over, but I'll catch you on another show.

Cecile:

I remember being really, really stoned at the one Detroit Cramps show I went to in '83 and it being one of the very best shows I ever saw.

In fact, iirc WFMU's own Rob Weisberg was there.

I missed them the following year because I think I had alcohol poisoning. Or at least it felt like it. I heard Lux took off his pants. Damn.
  10:20am
annie:

word up PMD, i'll make anote of it..

Trouble: I dare you to follow this with Boom by Flight of the Conchords. ;D
  10:22am
dale:

re: turntable. If you already have a turntable and amp or receiver just go to Radio Shack and get a patch cable. It's two RCA plugs into an 1/8 inch stereo plug. There's free software at Version Tracker.com. The more expensive ION turntable with the built in burner would be the easiest way to go, though
  10:22am
dc pat:

Didn't Lux take his pants off at every show? He did at every show I saw...and every show blew the roof off the place. What's poor Poison Ivy going to do??
  10:22am
BSI:

I caught the Cramps/Butthole Surfers/Dead Milkmen show at Warner Theater (DC) ... new years eve, 1988 or 89... Surfers had the whole multi-films & Gibby's lighter-fluid/hi-hat explosions thing, Cramps were fiercely awesome... Many of us still have delightful scars from that show.
  10:22am
dale:

Sonny and Cher?
  10:24am
GP:

Thanks Dale...yeah WOOT has the ION today for about $55 including shipping....must.......restrain........wallet.
  10:26am
dale:

GP, don't do it, for $55 it must be a horrible cartridge and stylus
  10:27am
Vivian:

I saw the Cramps in Atlanta 94? 93? I remember Lux in latex & stilletos, perched on top of the speakers. A guy dancing next to me vomited, turned to me, shrugged his shoulders and continued to dance.
Great show.
  10:28am
Doug from DC:

GP, I got the Numark TT-USB, and am not thrilled with it. I found that the codec it comes with doesn't support control of the input gain. If you connect to it with Audacity, the control for this is disabled. Instead, there's a little black knob labeled "gain" on the bottom of the unit, next to the USB port. And no mention of this in the manual. The knob does work, with some patience. I like Dale's suggestion.
  10:29am
hazmania:

Lux would usually be down to his heels and g-string by the fifth song here ('cause it's hot) in Dallas. Saw a more "gentle" BHS show this winter in Dallas - no pyrotechnics and Gibby's parents seated in the balcony. I guess you can't go home again!
  10:29am
Lucky:

It's a sticky issue. I can really see how downloading provides access to music that may, otherwise, never be reissued. At the same time, sites providing music for free limit the ability for a CD reissue to break even. Personally, I would prefer to have the CD, but I think I would also rather hear certain music than never have the chance to. Then there is the moral labyrith of who's really making money (ie: ESP Records). Oy!

But the artist (or their descendants) should get paid.

I also hate how its effecting retailers. I'm sad to see indy record stores go down. It's not right.
  10:30am
zoot:

For Vinyl to MP3 or CD, Griffin Technologies makes a little $35 doodad called the iMic. Hook it up to your amplifier and turntable via RCA jacks, and you're all set. I've been converting for quite a few years. It's quel swell.
  10:31am
DJ Icepack:

Dear Mom

I love your music. I think your show is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!
  10:32am
annie:

zoot, does that require any software download?
  10:32am
GP:

Thanks everyone for the advice and Dale, my wallet thanks you!
  10:33am
dc pat:

OK, it's easy to get LPs on your PC but what software do you all use?
  10:33am
hazmania:

Pro-ject makes a true audiophile USB turntable (3 bills.) I personally use my old turntable with ARTcessories USB Phono Plus interface. It does everything (including line level for cassettes and a headphone amp) for well under a hundred if you shop a little.
  10:34am
BSI:

hazmania:
that sounds desperately sad, somehow... they were doing Locust Abortion Technician material at that BHS/Cramps show, & the lighter-fluid/hi-hat thing was seriously freaking out the folks at the Warner, looking at these old tapestries over the stage that were rather flammable...
  10:34am
BSI:

...referring to previous hazmania BHS comment, that is.
  10:35am
Carmichael:

Good morning, all. Following the Lux Interior convo, I hung out with them both several times back in '70s, and saw them again about 7 months ago playing here in Sacramento. We met at a funky old record store run by an old guy named Ed that knew every single song from every single genre. He was amazing.

You can't play enough Cramps.
  10:36am
zoot:

Annie, I use Cakewalk Pyro software, but I think there may be some freeware available.
  10:37am
Doug in DC:

I saw the Cramps at Ontario Theatre in DC back in 1980. It was crazy, Lux was shirtless in black leather pants, running around the stage, moaning and making noises into a mic he had in his mouth.
  10:38am
hazmania:

BSI - I think all indoor pyrotechnics are now banned. They did use them at a free outdoor show I saw five years ago. They did keep the three big video screens so it wasn't at all bad. Just not the same. I have seen them consistantly as a local band since 84.
  10:40am
dale:

I use an old one called Coaster. If money were no object I'd just buy a CD recorder made by Sony or Philips
  10:40am
hazmania:

Annie, look into Spin It Again on-line. It's cheap and flexible (automatic track splitting, click reduction, re-equalization, etc. )
  10:41am
dale:

Oh, and I just record single songs...I've never done an album in one sittting. I don't know what's best to do that. maybe someone can enlighten?
  10:42am
annie:

cool, thanks..
  10:45am
zoot:

It's easy to do an entire album, just remember to separate the tracks. Best not to use the noise reduction; you'll lose some fidelity and that vinyl feel.
  10:46am
dc pat:

Ah, that's the problem==whole album. It's a pain in the ass tomake separate files out of each tune. That's why I've only done 2 LPs so far.
  10:48am
zoot:

I've done about 300 albums. Just read a good book and listen to the album whilst recording.
  10:49am
hazmania:

That's why I like Spin It Again so much. It gets the tracks split in 10 seconds and is spot on 90% of the time. You just have to move the markers to get it perfect. You're done in less than 2 minutes
  10:49am
Doug from DC:

Audacity lets you insert track labels and run a single export that creates all the tracks as separate files using the label name. The interface is a little clunky, but I've gotten used to it.
  10:50am
Doug from DC:

There's also an auto-identify function, but I'm kind of a control freak about that.
  10:50am
risky!:

RIP LUX INTERIOR!! Morning All!
  10:50am
hazmania:

Trouble, tell your guest I will buy this album ASAP (just as I have their entire catalog.)
  10:51am
annie:

yup, i downloaded audacity... just haven't hooked everything up.. still techno-scared to attempt it...
  10:51am
annie:

yup, i downloaded audacity... just haven't hooked everything up.. still techno-scared to attempt it...
  10:53am
Carmichael:

I've had a program for years called CD Recorder. I bought it at Best Buy for under $20. I record whole album sides, and it has an adjustable feature that will find every pause between sounds. You can choose to mark or delete each pause. It works great. I have my Technics SL Q2 fully automatic direct drive quartz lock turntable that I bought in 1979, and I use an old Radio Shack amp that I've had even longer. Works great for me.
  10:55am
Parq:

I was just gonna ask you about Audacity, Annie. I'm still game to give it a try, although I find that the Mac versions of audio freeware are less facile than their PC equivalents (over to you, Ike).
  10:55am
dc pat:

hmm I've used Audacity to record me but not anything else. I'll try.
  10:56am
Sean Daily:

Not even close to first comment! Woo hoo!
  10:58am
GP:

Has anyone seen that movie; "Cadillac Records"? Any good?
  11:00am
Parq:

Miss T, hope you're proud of your young man and his devotion to your show. My daughter would have skated her Razor scooter off a bridge before she would have said nice things about my music at that age.
  11:00am
Bennett:

Trouble, just in case you haven't seen, or don't have, this one: How Our Birds Sing Vol. 1
Here: http://closetcurios2.blogspot.com/2009/01/how-our-birds-sing-vol-1.html
Happy listening!
  11:00am
Cecile:

Dunno, but Etta James is already lobbing barbs at Beyonce.
  11:03am
Cecile:

I wouldn't say the smaller labels are better.
Lots of artists are trying to get paid from Ace and Charley.
  11:03am
GP:

Thanks Michael and Trouble for some great selections today.
Michael please put up some contact info...website?
  11:04am
BSI:

I'll vouch for Audacity but I've only used it as a cheap remastering device for my own stuff. Fades & cuts & levels & whatnot. And it runs well on my mac...
  11:04am
Cecile:

But I APPLAUD your guest Michael for doing the right thing.
  11:04am
texas scott:

Hey GP
"Cadillac Records" is interesting in a historical type of movie but ,I was unhappy with the Etta portrayal.Thought it was pretty weak.
  11:06am
Carmichael:

Etta's just protecting her turf. The new young soul singers are re-doing all the old classics, or mashing them into hip-hop.I had to suffer through Radio Disney last night while transporting my daughter somewhere. You wouldn't believe what they're doing to our beloved classics .... (sob)
  11:07am
Doug:

Cecile - what are you referring to, re: Etta james / Beyonce' - has she said things in the press about Beyonce's portrayal, or the singin at the Inauguration?
  11:08am
Cecile:

Etta's been mouthing off about the inauguration.

I can't say that I disagree that much with her.
  11:09am
Numero:

Michael works here: www.numerogroup.com
  11:10am
Carmichael:

Anybody having a volume problem? I have my speakers craked up pretty high, and it still sounds muddy.
  11:10am
annie:

fine here charmichael
  11:11am
Doug:

Carmichael - Now the general public has to suffer thru not only radio Disney, but now, Disney Eggs - saw it the other day in the store. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbuXOopbWcE
Cecile - i wouldnt disagree either. Plus, all the people they could have had sing "Change is Gonna Come", and they pick that king of soul Jon Bon Jovi ?
  11:11am
GP:

LOL Carmichael...Radio Disney...I can totally relate with my two daughters..first thing they ask for in the car that or the local Clear Channel top-40 stuff....arghh

Thanks Numero for the info.
  11:13am
annie:

glad i had my son when i did, i am not at all able to stomach this new kind of children's "entertainment".
  11:14am
Cecile:

I think if I had the wee ones, they would be watching Kipper all the time. It's so old fashioned, sweet and has a nice jazz soundtrack.
  11:15am
Cecile:

Doug - I have to agree. I mean, I can see an impenetrable music like free jazz or moderm composition needing a contemporary translator - but for a direct, simple music like soul? If you have one, you should be able to get it. Sigh.
  11:19am
dale:

this version of hey joe is great!
  11:26am
annie:

cecile, this is for you.

Bad Ronald:

I love Kipper, Kipper the dog!
  11:30am
Cecile:

thanks, Annie, LOL!
I think I was thinking the fast, repetitive thoughts that make you down. I'll have to change it up a bit.

Bad Ronald: the dog with the slipper!
  11:30am
Parq:

GP, when my daughter was grade-school age, I aways let her listen to whatever she wanted in the car. My dad always did that with me, and I know that it couldn't have been easy for him sometimes.

Once, we were in the car and I had Terre T's show on. The kid was silent for a bit, gazing at the radio thoughtfully. After a minute or so, she reached over and turned up the volume. That's my girl!
  11:32am
Carmichael:

We used to party down with the Wiggles, until Greg left. Then it was Zoey 101, until another of the Spears clan got knocked up. We're currently into Zach & Cody, with some Wizards of Waverly Place thrown in for good measure.
  11:32am
annie:

wooohoo!! great story parq. i followed the same practice and look what happened!! i love independant thought !!
  11:34am
Chris:

amazing stuff but man is it low-fi
  11:35am
GP:

Carmichael..sounds very similar..although we are more partial to Sponge Bob and the stuff on Nick.
Parq, I can relate to that also, same thing with my Dad. I will occasionally put in one of CD's to see what they think...they did get hooked on the "Corn Weenie" song from Ken's show and now that song has spread throughout the junior high.
  11:37am
Parq:

GP, great stuff. One of my wife's old co-workers had turned the title of a low-tier children's book from their company - "Time for Ferrets!" -- into a catch phrase. My daughter picked up on that in 7th grade, and soon the whole class was saying it.
  11:42am

I always find that good old-school punk works great with the kids. "C'MON! C'mon! 'urry up 'arry Come on!" the Ramones are #1 in my house but one tune the kids are constantly singing is the Clash's version of Junko Partner. My 2 year old asked me the other day "Daddy, what is loaded?"

Don Cornelius:

Does anyone else here miss "SoulTrain"?
  11:47am
dc pat:

That's funny Bad Ron, me too. I kind of blew them off when I was young--not hardcore enough or something.
  11:47am
Carmichael:

Yeah, the Clash! My kids like the 101ers' "Key to Your Heart" and "Rockin' the Casbah". Also the Ramones' "I Wanna Be Sedated" has them curiously confused, so I must be doing something right.
  11:47am
Bad Ronald:

http://tinyurl.com/davidhigh = loaded
  11:48am
annie:

  11:51am
Bad Ronald:

No, not mine. I stumbled across the vid yesterday...
  11:53am
GP:

Kids got Rock Band for Christmas, my little daughters new favorite song..."Gimme Shelter". "Blitzkrieg Bop" is also a popular one. They love playing drums on that one.
  11:54am
dc pat:

  11:54am
GP:

  11:56am
Evan:

Greetings from LA...

Never heard of "Kipper," but I have a 19-month old, and sounds like she might like it. She really likes this folky musician named Elizabeth Mitchell.

The kid after the dentist vid is hilarious. "Why is this happening?"
  11:58am
Cecile:

Evan, I think she would - it's a sweet cartoon about a puppy and his little friends. They all have charming British accents, and it's taken at a nice slow pace. Very relaxing, even for people who have long passed toddlerhood.
  11:58am
Bad Ronald:

Yeah GP
  11:59am
GP:

The kiddos would like this Jersey Slide song.
  11:59am
annie:

  12:00pm
Carmichael:

Come to think of it, the kids do like Sam and Dave. All is not lost.

Re: Woot's USB turntable offer

You get what you pay for. It is about as cheesy as they come.

The Ion iPTUSB has a ceramic cartridge with is very rough on your vinyl and has a narrower frequency response than a magnetic cartridge.

A plastic platter and no anti-skate adjustment round out the package.

As Dale suggested, any analog turntable can become a USB turntable fairly easily.

If you want to save some $$$, buy a good analog turntable used and digitize it from there.
