A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Listener comments!

  9:04am
ffrr:

Good morning Trouble & listeners. Any thoughts on the NYTimes spread on M.I.A.? Apparently she was none too pleased. The sample of 'Born Free' sounds great though.
  9:04am
jamesie:

hup!
  9:04am
north guinea hills:

When has there not been a persistent repetition of bird calls?
  9:07am
trouble:

good morning all! james have you moved? and sadly i haven't had a second yet to read the M.I.A piece. what is all the hubub about?
  9:11am
patrick:

trouble! happy Fog to you! i regret to tell you im not much longer for the east coast.
  9:11am
jamesie:

Hi Trouble, yes I am in a rented house-sitting until middle of July when I will move to Islington goodbye Chiswick :)
  9:15am
passepar2:

good afternoon trouble... tuning into wfmu for the first time in a while (just been 3 1/2 months in central america) and a dandy pleasure fer sure to be finding yr troublesome self... gracias!
  9:15am
ffrr:

The M.I.A. piece exposes her newly posh L.A. lifestyle against her Sri Lankin 'terrorist' theories, along with conflicting accounts of her father's involvement w/the Tamil Tigers.
  9:16am
MIchael:

Morning Trouble! M.I.A got turned into a caricature by Herschberg and gets called out on a bunch of stuff about her past. An engaging read to say the least...whoa! never heard this Louise Bourgeois track sweeet!
  9:16am
trouble:

wow central america for 3 1/2 mos, that must have been wild...
  9:19am
-otte:

i do love your playlist (colleen and so great Louise Bourgeois's song).Do you understand the words she says?It is great.I love this woman!
  9:20am

hmmm, M.I.A gets rearranged by the same media that help create her, wow
  9:20am
texas scott:

love the haunted ballroom stuff.
  9:20am

i think the louise is making sound poem nonsense out of slang words...?
  9:23am
-otte:

no.It maks sense. "otte" is meaning little. When a woman do something she does low.It is an irony about man's look.Very good song!
  9:24am
still b/p:

MIA v. NYT looks like collision of pitching-for-public-perception agendas. Who knows where earnestness lies? (That's a question I might repeat randomly today, here and elsewhere, 'kay?)
  9:24am

good morning Trouble
good morning every one
  9:26am

truffle flavored french fries! Wow! The rich sure know how to live it up!
  9:28am
passepar2:

spent most of the time on an organic farm on Isla de Ometepe... howler monkeys, scorpions, exotic birds and tarantulas amongst the neighbours - great place fer sure, however, coming back to "civilization" = Lisburn, Northern Ireland - I'm not sure which is really the wild?...

on a musical note - cumbia and dancehall rule!
  9:28am
listener mark:

From the NYT article,
"Among the offenses listed was M.I.A.'s predilection for truffle flavored French fries."
  9:29am

I'll have a sturgeon roe shake and some chocolate-covered Krugerrands, please.

Yes, Nabisco Cracker Box Factory

this sat is beacon town-wide yard sale day, so you can get your art and thrift jones on with one stone.
  9:39am
Cecile:

That Lynn Hirschberg has stabbed a lot of other people in the back. MIA is full of contradictions. So were the Sex Pistols. So were the Clash. I hope over time her politics become more informed.
  9:40am
north guinea hills:

I'm going to one of the Belgium fry places and see if they have truffle flavored fries.
  9:40am
Cecile:

And the truffle flavored French Fries? MIA put up the audio, and it's actually the journalist who is obsessing over the fries!
  9:41am
patrick:

saw a bunch of her current and older work at ICA boston a few years ago, its was great, although it was difficult for most of my High Schoolers to wrap their heads around. the work at the Dia is fantastic. she will be missed.

good luck with the end of the school year trouble, any chance you might be making your way yo Vacationland this summer?? hows DJ Icepack?
  9:44am
Francis:

In the sound poem,Louise says masculine words and gives their imaginary grammatical feminine connections which don't appear in french dictionnary ,as un chameau, une chameaute ( a camel , a camelle ! ). So another way to express her male/female links obsessions ,I suppose.
Good morning Trouble.

bonjour patrick. and bonjour francis, thanks for the louise translation, that clarifies it. Patrick YES we want to come up to see you b4 you exit. what's the departure date? icepack is great, tired of having to get up early for school, as ready for vacation as i am.
  9:52am
Maria D:

All this talk about MIA makes me want some truffle-flavored french fries. Do they sell those now at Mickey D's?
  9:54am
gib:

or french fry flavored truffles.. hmm.. good morning modern world.
  9:54am
Cecile:

Nah, but the Bulldog in Minneapolis has some yummy truffled tater tots. Just don't bring the leftovers home - everything will smell like sexy, expensive dirt...
  9:55am
patrick:

not sure about an exit date, late july, maybe later. you are all welcome to stay with Emily and myself.

  10:02am
Shawn:

Is "pagina dos " a remix of The Books?
  10:02am

LOL! I like Robert's take on it, but truffled tater tots are surprisingly tasty. And they have little black flacks on 'em.

@dc pat: You're talking "pop rocks," now.
  10:17am

@ Robert Sietsema : oh, yesterday I wrote (on internet) and described the sleeve of New Wave Hot Dogs Yo La Tengo 2nd album and quoted your name. You are the one who took the photography, aren't you ? I really love this sleeve and have put the record on one of my living rooms wall ! It's crazy how the man smiling in front of the sandwiches van (the owner of the van ?) looks like my elder brother ,his ringer ! Was the scene in Manhattan ?

Morning ( afternoon ) Trouble!

Thursday, Louise Bourgeois ( RIP ) , transporting music, and truffel flavored potato chips! What else could you want in early June ? thanx

Adrian in London:

Just got here. There was a traffic jam. God I need to hear some soothing sounds right now. Hey Trouble, the marathon premium is great; that Dusty song is amazing, obviously St Etienne sampled it for Nothing Can Stop Us. It's locked in my car CD player for the "summer"

Granola is super easy. I should do it more.
I gotta start making yogurt. The Greek stuff has gotten so expensive since everyone discovered it is delicious.
  10:50am

Yogurt. Yes! I can't find good yogurt.

  10:53am
Cecile:

I have a stand mixer, that's practically a bread maching. I gotta start making pizza crust again. That's easy, too.

I did make a pile of greens out of stuff I would have tossed, kohlrabi top and some bok choy that was getting droopy. Threw in a bag of frozen mustard greens and a smoked porkchop. Best greens I ever ate, for sure
  10:54am
dc pat:

CLOSE enough, thanks trouble...
  10:54am

3 yr old girls around here really really really like the "winnie the parakeet" song and want to hear it again. Radio is hard to explain to kids these days.
  10:54am

Re: living off the grid - I just finished a terrific book "A Different Kind of Luxury" by Andy Coturier about 11 Japanese folks tired of the treadmill of capitalism, and striving for lives of self-sufficiency.
  10:54am
trs:

Nice diy composter, Mike. Where'd you get the pickle barrel? D'you think I could add worms to one (and they'd enjoy the tumbling ride) ?
  10:55am
Jennique:

I'm a part of North Brooklyn Compost Project. Surprising how much waste I accumulate each week.

Thanks for playing Eddie Cochran. Three Steps to Heaven is my fave tune by him.
  10:55am
Cecile:

Trouble, for future reference, there is a delightfully awful parakeet song sung by Audrey Williams, Hank's wife that reminds me of the parakeet song.
  10:56am
Priscilla:

I love making things from scratch -- especially baked goods. I mostly enjoy the challenge, like chemistry experiments. My husband says I'm just being cheap, and maybe that's part of it, too. But he eats the stuff, so...
  10:57am
Cecile:

I'm not so much a baker, but I do really like to improvise over a saucepan, skillet or salad bowl. And I haven't put my crockpot away in months.

Used to bake my own bread back in the 70's. Got a breadmaker now. Makes a nice rye loaf.
Good composter Mike. Mine's one of those open bottom types that stands on the ground. Don't know where the worms come from - they just appear.
  10:58am

Good morning Trouble, and those who follow Trouble ...
  10:58am
Brian:

Make yourself some dilly beans when local green beans come in at market. Never buy pickles again!
  10:59am
Cecile:

Oh, yeah. You can even make them from leftover pickle juic eand blanched beans.
  10:59am
LizGig:

Does anyone here do lactose fermenting?
  11:00am
mike:

there's a pickle store on the LES that gives barrels away thurs. mornings.
And ya, you can probably add worms... you need to leave scraps in the barrel for 5 weeks. then you toss them in a bin where they further decompose but rats wont' touch it. It's not food to them anymore. At this point it might be best to add worms.
  11:00am
Brian:

@DickD: When you grind your own flour, it comes out warm and ready for the yeast. (Quite a chore, though ...)
  11:05am

In an hour, I will be baking a vanilla cake with chocolate butter cream topping and an apple walnut cake. Using duck eggs, which gives a nice colour.

I'm thinking about making up a batch of "Freedom fries aux truffes."
  11:08am

I compost with a steel trash can but I have to expand--the pickle barrel looks good. I bake bread all the time--once you get the kneeding done all you have to do is wait for it to rise.
  11:08am

OK, that's it. I'm off promptly at noon for a good drippy cheeseburger and sweet potato fries.

We haven't gotten it yet, so maybe it slipped your mind. No worries--this year's promo is working well. I'm worried the kid will be asking me how the parakeet cage's latch broke all night (and we'll be stuck on a plane to Bucharest via Amsterdam). I'll think of some acceptable explanation I hope.

Love Wild Honey! Beach Boys rule. 1st concert I attended in '76 'Beach Boys 'Love You' tour. Brian sat onstage behind a piano, in a white bathrobe and would occasionally play along a little. Most of the time, though, he was just looking at the audience in a 1000 mile stare. Great show!

Jeff Beck made a killer Gene Vincent tribute album with his band The Big Town Playboys.

Great versatile show ,thanks.
