Favoriting June 16, 2010: you're welcome, tri-state area: DIAMONDSNAKE live set!
EFD kicks off his new time on the WFMU summer schedule with a bang - a headbang, that is. Diamondsnake began just a few short months ago, when Phil Costello (Satanicide, Valley Lodge) and Moby (Moby) began collaborating on some earworm-inducing glam-metal anthems. Their skull-crushing vision was fully realized with the addition of Tomato (Sound of Urchin) on attack drums, and Dave Hill (Valley Lodge, Walter Schreifels Band, funny person) who plays either bass or guitar, depending on what Moby feels like doing. (Dave mostly plays bass. Just sayin'.) The band has their first-ever gig on Thursday June 17 at the Highline Ballroom in NYC, but tune in the night before, Wednesday the 16th, to hear their world radio debut right here on WFMU! Even if you think you're not a fan of pop-metal you'll want to catch this set -- it's all the hooks and humor, with none of the hair. Don't miss it!

Listener comments!

  9:02pm
AZ:

We're not used to hearing you while it's still light out here on the west coast. But welcome to Wednesday!
  9:02pm
chrisvb:

  9:03pm
efd:

  9:05pm
efd:

I'm not used to driving in while it's still light out myself.
  9:06pm
seang:

Anybody goin to the Goodnight loving tonight at The Plough and Stars in Cambridge, MA? Vamos!
  9:06pm

  9:07pm
papa smurf:

Whoah! Trippy!
  9:12pm
chrisvb:

  9:14pm
marq aka unofficial Kenny G promoter:

seang-
as unofficial Kenny G promoter can I count on you to infuse folks in Cambridge about the big event tomorrow night...he's on the air at wfmu at 7pm? THE RETURN OF KENNY G!!!!
  9:19pm
efd:

chrisvb, not as far as I know; but I have a feeling you're making a joke that I'm not getting.
  9:23pm
chrisvb:

  9:24pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Hey, Mount Carmel! They were live in the studio just recently, no?
  9:24pm
chrisvb:

efd, wasn't making a joke. sounded "otherwise" familiar.
  9:25pm
hellofromhere:

That Mount Carmel song was super excellent! Thanks!
  9:26pm
efd:

Ken, yes, they did a killer set on Brian Turner's show yesterday.

chrisvb, don't think pjh covered it & it's a Modey Lemon original.
  9:27pm
john:

what is this starbreaker? this song kinda rules.
  9:28pm
chrisvb:

efd, cool, i just heard something familiar in it. that's a good thing. been listening to fmu since the 80's. i've heard a lot.
  9:28pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

That Starbreaker tune is familiar to me, too.
  9:30pm
marq aka unofficial Kenny G promoter:

It's not light out here in Vermont as EFD starts his show. It's dark. But when Kenny G starts his show tomorrow at 7pm it will still be light out here. But may turn to darkness as soon as he gets on the air. The stress of getting used to the new schedule is good for the brain. Keeps it alive.
  9:32pm
li'l funk:

I have pretty clear memories of those horns showing up at Red Sox games... Not that I could ever get it to make a noise other than "pffffffft"
  9:37pm
efd:

exactly, Tri---- uh, I mean, li'l funk!
  9:41pm
kvt:

Diamond Snake! Sounds like many of those familiar metal tunes of the 80's. And not the bad ones.
  9:42pm
Lou Screw:

How abt some Vatican Commandos for Moby?
  9:42pm

  9:45pm
efd:

This was one of the most impressive displays of rock I've had the pleasure to witness.
  9:47pm
chrisvb:

all the ladies!
  9:48pm
marq aka unofficial Kenny G promoter:

All of the fuss we made back in the 80's about the hair. What the heck was that all about. There was a big fuss in the 70's about beards and such. Now there seems to be some thing about practically no hair at all and such.
  9:50pm
chrisvb:

still rockin my hair. no mullet here friends. 40 in december
  9:50pm
kvt:

SOU is always a great show. It's all about the professional sound and passionate delivery and Tomato always delivers. I'm won over. Wishin' I was free tomorrow night!!

Original, high quality rock, elusive yet accessible. "You have to turn over many rocks to find a real diamond!"
  9:51pm
efd:

kvt, I have to admit I was previously unfamiliar with Sound Of Urchin, but as a drummer myself I was mightily impressed with Tomato.
  9:52pm
Kat:

a power ballad!
  9:59pm
Sybil:

Good evening all. So it's after 11 already?

Oh, wait...
  10:00pm
E.L.:

As usual, I'm a little too late but just in time.
  10:00pm
efd:

I know, Sybil - weird, right?!
  10:00pm
Sybil:

I just love the pink, magenta, lime color scheme.
  10:01pm
Will BeTheBoy:

Knockout stuff EFD. Good to have you on earlier.
  10:01pm
efd:

hey, E.L.

Sybil, glad you like the summer colors!

Thanks Will BTB! Nice to have you here.
  10:02pm
efd:

I meant, "Hey, E.L.!" with an exclamation point.
  10:02pm
kvt:

Several years ago, in the basement of the Court Tavern in New Brunswick I myself stumbled upon Sound of Urchin, paying the cover charge out of sheer boredom and I was floored!

The caliber of performers that their members have collaborated with can win over the even the most cynical - "seen it all" types. Trust me. Most new projects just plain suck. Tired, uninventive, the same old crap in a new package.

What draws me to diamondsnake is the familiarity of the melody with the showmanship that accompanies it. You have to have been around a long time to know it when you hear it.
  10:08pm
Aharon:

Oh boy! That'll show ya, hump day!
  10:09pm
The Swami:

listenin' to EFD an FMU; crazy ass Diamondsnake! Mt. Carmel yeserday, this today? Goooooooooood stuff!
  10:10pm
efd:

Yeah, there's obviously a sense of humor at work here, but this is anything but a joke band.

Hey Aharon, hey Swami - glad you're enjoying getting your ass handed to you (sonicly speaking, of course).
  10:12pm
marq aka unofficial Kenny G promoter:

I was the promoter for this one band a few years ago. All guys past or around 30 years old. Different hair situations as you would imagine. One guy had long dreads, one guy was about half bald, one kept a full beard. In the end, they each had their groupies and women who loved them.
  10:14pm
The Swami:

I believe you are handing it to me FAntasy baseball wise as well Mr. Davies.
  10:14pm
Joe:

Wow. Just wow.

... waiting to hear what they change "whores" to...
  10:15pm
efd:

not me, I'm in like 6th place this week! I believe it's Mr. Aharon at the top of the fantasy baseball charts.
  10:16pm
E.L.:

¡Hey! My new dream bill might be the Leather Uppers and Diamondsnake.
  10:16pm
Joe:

Ah. Still "Whores". Unless he said "horns".
  10:17pm
efd:

Make sure you stay tuned for the interview, during which Moby reveals something that delighted me to no end.
  10:17pm
Joe:

"Yeah, there's obviously a sense of humor at work here, but this is anything but a joke band."

Much like it was said about another band very much in the EFD orbit, the Upper Crust:

"They're not a joke band: they're a rock band with a great sense of humor."

Another awesome band that might fit in this category: Personal and the Pizzas
  10:20pm
efd:

I'm like the moth to the non-joke-band flame.
  10:24pm
kvt:

Cool, Moby in punk rock. I have a new-found admiration for him.
  10:25pm
Joe:

I wonder how many people who listen to your current show religiously will go on to be super-famous.

Besides myself, obviously.
  10:26pm
kvt:

LOL!! I used to smoke up in parking lots in NJ throughout the 80's listening to punk and hair metal bands. Hence, the obvious attraction!
  10:27pm
efd:

Only time will tell, Joe.

Moby's punk band Vatican Commandos are playing a reunion show on July 17th at Mercury Lounge - first show in more than 25 years.
  10:27pm
marq aka unofficial Kenny G promoter:

Hey, Joe-

Your response and reason for it makes me think of the Rutles. Which had it's things with the Bonzo Doo Da band (sp) The Rutles were questioned at the time about being a joke band. And they were. But producers didn't get the joke. Humor and music. It belongs.
  10:29pm
kvt:

The Rutles... haven't thought about them in a while.
  10:29pm
E.L.:

Joe— I'm going to go out on a limb and say EVERYBODY— including you. Let's all agree to meet back on this comment list in ten years.
  10:31pm
Joe:

To be perfectly honest, I'm surprised at some of the non-PC lyrics involved in these songs... Moby having famously covered "That's When I Reach for My Revolver" as "That's When I Think that It's Over"
  10:32pm
Aharon:

Maybe (with a British accent) the Ticket Elevenseize?
Hmmm...maybe not.
  10:33pm
Joe:

Agreed. It'll be like the end of Wet Hot American Summer.
  10:34pm
listener james from westwood:

I say keep it the "Midnight Ticket Oasis." Hell, the Midnight Cowboy did his thang outside the hour of 12.

Also, hey—Maria Muldaur. With EFD guest vocals.
  10:36pm
efd:

Joe, I thought he did a straight cover of "That's When..." at first, then had to re-do the lyrics because MTV wouldn't play the video? Am I totally wrong in thinking that?
  10:38pm
marq aka unofficial Kenny G promoter:

E.L._

Will most of us who cares still be around in ten years? Oh, wait, I could be I guess. Let's make it 20 years. I will be old enough but still be younger that Irwin is now. Trying to age myself and gauge longevity by the wfmu djs.
  10:41pm
E.L.:

I was thinking you would over-dub "midnight" along with "at the" and keep the same song for the sake of tradition. If you were really ambitious you could have a special guest sing the "11 o'clock" over the midnight each week. You're on a roll after all!

Marq— I'll race you to 20 years.
  10:44pm
Joe:

Wikipeding... wikipeding...

And EFD is correct, once again!

Can't hate Moby, no matter how hard I try. I guess Moby is just awesome and that is that. The man's only real blemish is his work with Gwen Stefani. And can you really blame him?
  10:45pm
efd:

E.L. and James, I think you're on the right track - at least for this week.

Of course, I thought I'd only sing "ticket" in place of "at the" once when I started doing that nearly four years ago.
  10:54pm
AZ:

The more things change: rather than depart because LJP is demanding I come and watch "Lost" before she falls asleep, I'm now departing because we're starving and we've gotta go grab some food. Anyway: sounding good, EFD!
  10:58pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Need everyone to Google for a song about eleven o'clock to play in place of the old ticket theme song. Or maybe hire some the guys who recorded Andy Breckman-man.
  10:59pm
David:

Just sing "at 11" after "oasis". Or "minus 1"
  10:59pm
bla:

EFD! Just punch in twice! once over "at" and once over "midnight". That would make my night every wednesday.
  11:01pm
bla:

oh sorry looks like this was already going on. didn't stop to read in my excitement. anyway love the show!!! you rock!
  11:02pm
E.L.:

I agree with bla! Just say: "Bla bla - bla bla" oasis...
  11:09pm
Sybil:

bla bla blablabla blaaa blaaa
  11:10pm
osvi:

Yo, EFD, different time, same great beats. I got ya...
  11:11pm
Sybil:

This must be Night of the Killer Bandnames. All I need now is some EWITFR...N
  11:13pm
Sybil:

Wait... *one of* next week's live guests?
  11:14pm
efd:

next band name might kill it, Sybil.
  11:16pm
Sybil:

Yup, that killed it, all right.
  11:18pm
efd:

next week is Scrantapalooza! Fulmarine Petrels and Das Black Milk, both from Scranton.
  11:21pm
Amanda:

I love Love Cascade!!!! Thanks thanks thanks.

"Barbe a Papa" means cotton candy, FYI. Happy summer to all.
  11:23pm
efd:

you're welcome! And here I was thinking "Barbe a Papa" meant papa's beard.
  11:23pm
Joe:

my theory was "groom the potato"
  11:26pm
Amanda:

We'll call it a Father's Day tribute, regardless. Barbershops and all being kind of a fatherly thing.
  11:26pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

Not only did Martin Rushent produce 999 but elso the Buzzcocks, Generation X, Altered Images, the Stranglers and the Go Go's.. Where is he now?
  11:37pm
efd:

thanks Michael, I was pretty sure he produced 999 but for some reason it started sounding funny when I said it out loud. And of course I blanked on some of those other bands also.
  11:38pm
E.L.:

Cool! They also did I Wanna Destroy You. So Amazing! Thanks EFD!
  11:40pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

Rushent did two 999 albums if I recall correctly. For a few years he was everywhere.
A happy Wednesday how do you do to you and Harry harrison.
  11:42pm
Amanda:

Every new Wednesday should be unwrapped like a precious gift.
  11:44pm
efd:

Neil sounds so enthusiastic.
  11:46pm
Joe:

EFD could you go over the story behind these again? These are recordings of an actual radio show or just army recruiting tools? It's on vinyl right? (definitely heard a scratch there)
  11:53pm
Joe:

Mom Dukes says thanx!
  11:57pm
Joe:

PS. Great show! PRIMETIME!
  11:58pm
Sybil:

Great show! As per usual, where "usual"=Tuesday night. But even better.

Thanks efd and Diane Kamikaze!
  11:58pm
efd:

thanks everyone! Stick around for Night People, and I'll see you next week!
  11:59pm
E.L.:

Thanks Evan!
