A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

i like bakelite. it's a good plastic to me, and as it's no longuer produced it obliged to recycle by bying them on flea market and other garage sale http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bakélite + it is in a Gainsbourg song (sea sex and sun)!
  10:12am
trouble:

today's artist is joseph e yoakum, an outsider artist
  10:13am
blackgreen13:

pierre, isn't that the original, first plastic?
  10:14am
trouble:

i think bakelite is gorgeous and i hear they stopped making it because it was flammable or some such crazy thing
  10:15am
Cheri Pi:

My friend bought a beautiful yellow bakelite bracelet this weekend at a flea market, I wish I could afford one.
  10:16am
dc pat:

I feel like good intentions turn into capitalist fads too often. I buy into this crap all the time. I'm looking at an expensive aluminum water bottle that I never use and right next to it is my beat up old plastic bike bottle. NOW, that's not to say that the production of plastic isn't more harmful than production of aluminum--and I understand that aluminum is a lot less resource demanding to recycle than plastic.

so...like everything else it's complicated... Ultimately I think you're right, the goal is to consume less.
  10:16am
Cheri Pi:

If I ever remarry, I want a bakelite ring.
  10:17am
jamesie:

going home on my bike along Rosebury Avenue, Sadlers Wells Thertre I passed Robert and Alfie , turned round and cheesily said, I love you both. Robert and Alfie smiled, Robert with his hands clasped together at his chest. It made my day.
  10:19am
pierre:

maybe blackgreen13, i know it's old.

@ trouble : …and it breaks easily, that's why it stopped i guess, we people tend to break thing now, and buy replacements… make things last longer is a goal to me too.

@ Cheri Pi : if i find something, i'll let you know, i bought a bakelite ashtray, and it does the trick. It is quite easy to find around here (france), sometime it's expensive, sometimes not at all.
  10:20am
dc pat:

bakelite looks like guitar picks to me and I can tell you, those things are extremely flammable...and stinky...
  10:21am
helpful elf:

One of the first plastics made from synthetic components (although phenol can be extracted from biological sources), Bakelite was used for its electrically nonconductive and heat-resistant properties in radio and telephone casings and electrical insulators, and also in such diverse products as kitchenware, jewellery, pipe stems, and children's toys. In 1993 Bakelite was designated a National Historical Chemical Landmark by the American Chemical Society in recognition of its significance as the world's first synthetic plastic.[1]
Phenolics are seldom used in general consumer products today due to the cost and complexity of production and their brittle nature. An exception to this overall decline is their use in small precision-shaped components where their specific properties are required, such as molded disc brake cylinders, saucepan handles, electrical plugs and switches and parts for electrical irons. Today, Bakelite is manufactured and produced in sheet, rod and tube form for hundreds of industrial applications in the electronics, power generation and aerospace industries, and under a variety of commercial brand names, including Garolite.
  10:22am
Cheri Pi:

Thanks @Pierre!

  10:27am
abby:

a disposable plastic water bottle killed my ipod
  10:27am
Cheri Pi:

My friend with the yellow bracelet said that if you drop bakelite it can shatter, so we were wondering how billiard / pool balls were made of it? Would they not shatter on impact?
  10:28am
helpful elf:

The primary commercial uses for Bakelite today remain in the area of inexpensive board and tabletop games produced in China, India and Hong Kong. Items such as billiard balls, dominoes and pieces for games like chess, checkers, and backgammon are constructed of Bakelite for its look, durability, fine polish, weight, and sound. Common dice are sometimes made of Bakelite for weight and sound, but the majority are made of a thermoplastic such as acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) which is not as durable as Bakelite.
  10:33am
wiki wacky:

The exacting requirements of the billiard ball are met today with balls cast from plastic materials that are strongly resistant to cracking and chipping. Currently Saluc, under the brand names Aramith and Brunswick Centennial, manufactures phenolic resin balls. Other plastics and resins such as polyester (under various trade names) and clear acrylic are also used, by competing companies such as Elephant Balls Ltd. and Frenzy Sports.

Cheri Pi:

Speaking of fiberglass, on my way to work this morning I jumped out of my car to pick up (from the side of the road) a fantastic double decker fiberglass lampshade. It has a small crack but otherwise is in perfect condition. Some products last forever.
  10:40am
blackgreen13:

it's used in pot handles and electrical insulators, so not flammable itself. Could be coated with something

  11:20am
Travis:

Yup. Sad. but true, Trouble. From: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Burl_Ives
Ives initially displayed liberal political convictions and was a member of Hollywood Fights Back, a movement by entertainers in the late 1940s to counter the actions of the House Un-American Activities Committee in identifying Communists in the entertainment industry.[6] Ives was listed as being a member of a left-wing group in the Red Channels pamphlet, and was blacklisted by the government until he stood before the House Un-American Activities Committee, and convinced them otherwise. In the process, he named names and labeled several of his colleagues as Communists. This act allowed Ives to continue his work in the industry, and he would go on to work in both the music industry and the film industry.[1] He was accused of betraying his colleagues and political beliefs to save his career, however.
