Listener comments!

  3:07pm
pierre:

Bonjour Irwin i just bought a "song from the key to Z" book, not read it yet, but soon…
Hello listeners
  3:08pm
Dan B From Upstate:

Trent?
  3:08pm
Josh:

Really? This is Britney? Really?!?

Wow!! I like it Irwin!
  3:09pm
Denise in DC:

I hope this Britney track does not herald what the rest of the show will be like.

Then again, I hope it does.
  3:10pm
Kurt:

Thanks, that has to be the most annoying and disturbing song I've heard this week.
  3:10pm
Aharon:

More Britney!
  3:11pm
Josh:

In Irwin we trust.
  3:11pm
Kurt:

I listen to this show for the aural abuse. I'm thinking of starting a support group for battered listeners.
  3:12pm
Ben Drinken:

maybe Irwin has discovered some very rare and early cassette tapes made by Britney as a 10 year old. and he will share them with us today.
  3:14pm
Carmichael:

I see Irwin is continuing the unofficial theme of today's shows, "Rock".
  3:14pm
Kurt:

How about if Britany goes head to head with Amanda.
  3:14pm
Carmichael:

Ooooh, Britney/Amanda mashup. Excellent, Kurt!
  3:18pm
Ben Drinken:

Amanda is more mature and experienced than Britney. Are we talking cat fight? Both at this point would be considered cougars.
  3:25pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

THIS TOWN IS MY TOWN
  3:25pm
Listening Out There:

As they say, "...it takes an ever improving village..."
  3:26pm
Matt from Springfield:

Afternoon everyone! I'm at home early today, so I can drinking during Irwin today! I'll need it!
  3:27pm
Matt from Springfield:

Then again, I got to miss Britney, but not Amanda, so already I'm happy bout that! (chug)
  3:27pm
Pertaining to J&H Productions:

Listening to Irwin and cooking! First time doing that in some time!
  3:29pm
Ben Drinken:

Me, too! Matt from Springfield. Thanksgiving eve always a good time to be home early to drink. Fill up on booze only so you will be good and hungry hung over tomorrow for the feast.
  3:31pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

that doesn't work so well when you're hosting, but I'll try it anyway tonight.
  3:31pm
Carmichael:

Matt, save your booze for 7SD. That normally drives me to drink.
  3:32pm
Ben Drinken:

I am also cooking during Irwin's show, or about to in a few minutes. I waited until his show to start. I just need to make one dish for tomorrow. Cheesy green bean and cream of mushroom cass all from scratch, no cans.
  3:33pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

definitely looking forward to some new Mazzy Star. Hope's voice always sends me skyward.
  3:33pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

that sounds good, Ben. Pretty time-consuming though.
  3:34pm
Aharon:

Why so upbeat, Mazzy Star?
  3:34pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Ben Hung-Over-Hungry, that's one way to do it.
I'd like to cook to WFMU some time, I'd need a laptop in my kitchen to do it.
  3:35pm
glenn:

kurt's home for battered listeners would be called tempura house.
  3:36pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Carm Maybe being "incoherent drunk" can make 7SD an enjoyable experience. I gotta drive in a few hours though...

@DCE Is this new Mazzy? Didn't know you were a fan. I like them as well!
  3:36pm
Ben Drinken:

@Carmichael: I once was talking in our local pub with a guy and we were talking about being married. He said his wife drives him to drink. And then he pointed her out and said she is over there. and said when he is done at the pub she will drive him back home.
  3:36pm
Listening Out There:

Actually, Matt, I have cooked whilst blasting WFMU through the iPhone app. Tinny sound, but when you're on the other side of the country...
  3:37pm
glenn:

there's a country singer from iceland named lay low. if you like mazzy star, you'll love her.
  3:37pm
Matt from Springfield:

That's the good kind of driving to drink!
  3:37pm
Matt from Springfield:

Yiddish Blues?
  3:38pm
kme in chi:

sonia sonia sonia sonia!
  3:38pm
kme in chi:

these guys always make me so happy :)
  3:39pm
glenn:

i read about the comedian harmonists on richard thompson's website, but this is the first time i've heard them.
  3:40pm
Matt from Springfield:

@glenn: Sounds like genuine 78 as well.
  3:41pm
Brass Knuckles:

What are they about? No time to google.
  3:42pm
Ben Drinken:

@kme in chi:

I am also fermenting some kimchi at the moment. Keeping an eye on it. If that counts as cooking since the work for it has already been done. should be ready for Thanksgiving. Nice to have some kimchi after eating tons.
  3:42pm
Matt from Springfield:

The Tiger Lillies cut is less edgy than usual...this one is almost like a Bonzo Dog song.
  3:43pm
kme in chi:

Matt: their catalog was released on CD a few years back.
Ben: love the stuff.
  3:43pm
glenn:

http://comedianharmonistsbook.com
  3:43pm
Denise in DC:

I love this plaintive-sounding apparently-ironic Tiger Lillies track.
  3:43pm
Denise in DC:

BTW, I am not cooking -- I am sitting in front of my computer at work as usual on a Wednesday afternoon.
  3:44pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hi Denise! Super ironic for that band.
  3:44pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks glenn!
  3:44pm
Denise in DC:

Hi Matt! I haven't paid attention to them before. Looks like I'm going to have to remedy that situation.
  3:46pm
Brass Knuckles:

oh man, arcesia lyrics are amazing.
  3:47pm
Matt from Springfield:

They were on Irwin's show a while ago, the same one with Go Home Productions (way back in the RealAudio era...)

The Tiger Lillies are a "punk cabaret" group with the intent of shocking lyrics. Personally I think they're "edgy" to the point of nicking my chin while shaving, but you may like them.
  3:48pm
Matt from Springfield:

Oh, "pop-psych"! I should remember "popsike", and to eat "popsikles". Nice Mike Batt track.
  3:48pm
Factoid:

Irwin mentioned in the write up: http://www.arcesia.com/bio.htm
  3:50pm
Brass Knuckles:

Something like potato?
  3:52pm
trrs:

re: image
Wow.
  3:53pm
PMD:

Listening live on the radio. Hi irwin!
  3:54pm
Matt from Springfield:

Yay! Radio sociopath Kenny G is pardoned!

Besides Irwin, you don't want to appear as "soft on poultry"...
  3:54pm
Ben Drinken:

At the symposium Kenny G, in his kilt, (what is he in clan Goldsmith?) said he had no desire to return to radio
  3:55pm
Anonymous Soprano Sax Player:

Kenny G is a dick! Why would he name himself after a famous musician?
  3:55pm
Denise in DC:

Soft on poultry? Never! I've never heard Irwin reciting a single rhyme during his show.
  3:56pm
Denise in DC:

Whoop! Yippie-yi-ki-yay!
  3:57pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

gawd I have not heard this Bobby Bare song in forever!
  3:57pm
Brass Knuckles:

This song makes me happy. Yo, throw me the rock. I'm open.
  3:57pm
Matt from Springfield:

@ASSP Actually I think Kenny G the musician is SO low, he named himself after the crazy radio personality Kenny G. Pat Metheny's take on the matter:
http://www.saxon.com/stephen/pat-story.htm
  3:58pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

happy thanksgiving, crew, I'm OUTTA HERE
  3:58pm
Denise in DC:

Hey, Irwin, do you happen to have a copy of "He Used to Take Acid, And Now He Loves God, But He's Still Got That Look In His Eye"?
  3:58pm
slugluv1313:

DROP KICK ME JESUS!!!!!!!! awwwww THANK YOU IRWIN!!!!!! always so uh, wonderful to hear this old *gem* again
  3:59pm
Ben Drinken:

I also noticed that Kenny G is a lot shorter than I thought he was when I saw him at the record fair and symposium. Even in his kilt boots he was shorter than me and I am not that tall.
  3:59pm
Irwin:

@Denise: who recorded?
  4:00pm
Denise in DC:

Let me Google -- BRB.
  4:01pm
Listening Out There:

Jim Ringer, is what I found...
  4:01pm
Denise in DC:

Yep, Jim Ringer was the one.
  4:01pm
Listening Out There:

More: Jim Ringer wrote it and recorded it on his LP, "Endangered Species (Flying Fish)."

It's included on "The Band of Jesse James: The Best of Jim Ringer (Philo)."
  4:02pm
Denise in DC:

IIRC, he wrote it after running into a Hare Krishna begging for money in an airport, back when that was still going on.
  4:03pm
Denise in DC:

I've only heard the song once, back in 1982 when I spent three months in Atlanta working for Legal Aid. Never forgot it, though.
  4:05pm
Ben Drinken:

Kenny G was also wearing along with his clan MacGoldsmith kilt, what looked like a traffic control vest. What, did he just come from volunteering as a parking guide at an I am a dick convention?
  4:05pm
Brass Knuckles:

Yeah! Alternative rock!
  4:06pm
Ben Drinken:

here begins the Kenny G roast in time for Thanksgiving
  4:06pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Ben: Of course. At those conventions, he directs traffic into already congested areas, down muddy hillsides, into the convention lobby, etc.
  4:09pm
Carmichael:

Pat Metheny and Kenny G the musician famously hate each other. I didn't know the backstory on Kenny G the radio sociopath.
  4:12pm
Denise in DC:

Oh my gawd I love this mashup.
  4:12pm
Denise in DC:

Even though nobody seems to know the words to the Jet Song.
  4:15pm
Ben Drinken:

Has anyone ever been to a fair where there is some guy selling Scottish stuff and family crests? they can just about match any name to a clan and sell you a t-shirt and a crest saying you fall into such and such clan. Imagine Kenny G going up to one of these in his kilt and asking where the surname Goldsmith fits into any Scot clan.
  4:15pm
Matt from Springfield:

Give thanks to COOKIE POWER!!!
  4:16pm
Carmichael:

1,2,3, Cookie!!
  4:17pm
Denise in DC:

I'm up for a cookie myself, come to think of it.
  4:17pm
Denise in DC:

Is that a series of farts I hear in the background?
  4:17pm
hamburger:

oreos reprazent
  4:19pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Ben: Yeah, my university (Radford) is called the Highlanders, because of the Scots-Irish heritage of Appalachia. In the fall at a festival there you can find sellers of tartan patterns of particular clans, on different merchandise. Normally they should only list a poster of genuine Scottish names, not a book matching "Wojciechowski" to a theoretical tartan.
  4:20pm
Listening Out There:

"Give me an e-x-a-a-a--aaaam...."
:)
  4:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

Wow, love the trippy journey of Dan & Joel here!
  4:21pm
Matt from Springfield:

Love the label name too, We Shop You Save Records!!
  4:21pm
Brass Knuckles:

Haven't heard a good one of these in a long time.
  4:24pm
George:

Good sounding recording too
  4:25pm
Snortley:

An essay on Norman Pettingill:

http://classic.tcj.com/alternative/norman-pettingill-his-life/
  4:25pm
Ben Drinken:

Yeah, Matt- and the person should be able to help if you know the last name of your grandma and such which MAY be a Scottish name. Or the name of some other somewhat recent ancestor with the Scot clan ties. maybe Kenny G has such a tie, to his credit.
  4:26pm
adlfjghwg:

what is this, WFUV now? I think I'll go find some freeform programming to listen to.
  4:26pm
autumn:

meow. meow. purr.
  4:27pm

glenn:

link for jim ringer downloads. - ttp://unclegil.blogspot.com/2010/07/false-friends-at-bar.html
  4:32pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Ben: True, for example my last name is a common English "catch all" type name, but I would wear the Douglas Clan on account of "Forresters" in my ancestry from the Borders region. I also once found "Heath" associated with the Inverness area, but haven't found a clan to associate with them.
  4:33pm
godless pinko:

GLENN! Thank you so much!
  4:34pm
Brass Knuckles:

Toby Keith? Is he on Dischord? Shit is pretty hardcore.
  4:34pm
glenn:

hey!! I'M a godless pinko.
  4:35pm
Ben Drinken:

Maybe some day when Kenny G decides he DOES want to be involved with radio again and everyone has since disowned him (at his request) and now he wants to come back, he would come crawling back in his clan MacWfmu kit and singing I will give you the cake! I get you the CAKE!!!Please!!!I will get you and give you the CAKE!!I'm SORRY!!!
  4:35pm
Matt from Springfield:

My good friend is a country fan and an apartment complex manager, so he once had this as a ringtone.
  4:35pm
Aharon:

Shtick much, Toky K? Not that it's not a good song.
  4:38pm
Matt from Springfield:

With cahoots like this, who wouldn't be ecstatic!
  4:43pm
Carmichael:

Country music is all shtick. And sappiness.
  4:43pm
glenn:

is it just me, or is this basically the boy with the arab strap?
  4:43pm
Stanley:

So this guy goes to the doctor's and the doctor says look, I don't know how to tell you this but you've gotta stop masturbating. The guy says why? He says - so I can examine you!
  4:46pm
Irma:

Feet Fockses
  4:47pm
Ben Drinken:

Yes they can match just about any anglo name with a scot clan. but I always find it funny that in the states this draws people to these things. People want to belong. I imagine that if Italians had such a tartan like system and had a booth at a fair Americans would be lined up in great numbers to see how their surname of Smith fits into italian heritage.
  4:49pm
Carmichael:

Martin Mull wrote a book long ago called The History of White People in America, basically a send-up of the need for cultural belonging Ben describes.
  4:51pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Ben,Carm: Good points--fellow Yanks will note that any ethnic celebration day is going to attract everyone, of every ethnicity. Because 1) we like to belong, and 2) we're fatasses! Pass that food!
  4:52pm
Carmichael:

Matt, I'll meet you at the British Food Festival!
  4:54pm
Matt from Springfield:

Bangers and rashers and mash! I wonder if there's any this time of year; normally that stuff is grouped with the Irish during St. Pat's.
  4:55pm
Ben Drinken:

Never see any whites pretending to be wanting to be Asian in the states on those holidays. Sometimes more increasingly African stuff but you can't fool that.
  4:56pm
trss:

Kippers. Young noses may object until they are grimed with age.
  4:56pm
Matt from Springfield:

Scottish food can be gross and/or unhealthy, though Radford's Highlander Fests did sell pretty tasty and lean lamburgers. Now beverage-wise, those fests were the only place in the States I've seen "Irn-Bru" sodas for sale.
  4:57pm
Ben Drinken:

And I almost forgot. Octoberfest brings out the "German" in Americans. Why is that? Just for one beer, then they go back to thinking they are Austrian.
  4:58pm
Matt from Springfield:

Though anglos and whites do attend Chinese New Year's parades where available, and increasingly Indian events, though that might not be looking for acceptance as trying to convince themselves that "they're down with" that culture.
  5:01pm
godless pinko in DC:

I'm betting on the "down with" explanation.
  5:02pm
Space:

You're taking me up, Irwin. You'd better give me back after 6.
  5:02pm

"We're so tolerant and multicultural!"

At least Andy Breckman wasn't trapped in his storage unit at that time.
  5:06pm
Kurt:

Wonder what he thinks about Madonna's version of American Pie
  5:06pm
Brass Knuckles:

Hilarious.
  5:07pm

ah this is so good...i hate that song so much and my dad used to play the 7" constantly. thank you

Pumpkin Pie, on the way!!
  5:08pm

Oooh, I remember first hearing this from you! Great Thanksgiving choice!

Though I gotta admit, Nature abhors me...
Speaking of which: Irwin, isn't there a chore you should be doing now?
  5:11pm
slugluv1313:

MUNCHIE!!!!! MUNCHIE!!!!! MUNCHIE!!!!!!! (the kitty, that is!!!)
  5:12pm
Matt from Springfield:

His Grace The Honourable Lord Kitchener!
And he's singing about *cats* again!
  5:14pm
Ben Drinken:

Yes Matt, but it gets so easy for white people to claim they are a certain culture if they are also white. Just about everybody in the states can claim some "Indian" in their ancestry just because everyone screwed everybody over time. Then when they want to be "down" with Native American history they point out that their great, great, great, great, great gand muncle was an Indian.
  5:14pm
Irwin:

Sorry 'bout that, Matt. My fingers typed the wrong title. Now corrected.
  5:16pm
godless pinko in DC:

Damn. I forgot about this version of Witchcraft. Gotta listen to Lounge-a-Palooza again.
  5:20pm
godless pinko Denise in DC:

Finally got my work done, so I can go home. I'll try to listen on my iPhone, but no guarantee Verizon will permit me to do so. So I'll say Happy Thanksgiving to All right now.
  5:24pm
Ben Drinken:

I have never met a white person claim to be Asian on Chinese New Year!!Like I see white people claim to be Scottish on Burns night. Or Irish on St.Ps day.
  5:29pm
Carmichael:

I would opt for the shortened mix of anything by the Thompson Twins.
  5:30pm
Matt from Springfield:

Drunken and squeaky T&C!

Happy Thanksgiving Denise!
  5:30pm
Carmichael:

Gobble gobble, Denise!
  5:31pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hey, where do you find instrumental backing tracks for "Burmese Land" and incorrect music like that one? Did you make that yourself, Irwin?
  5:32pm
Irwin:

@Matt: Wes Paich recorded it for me & Michie. We sang it somewhere.
  5:33pm
Brass Knuckles:

I was all, could it be, sounds like, More alternative rock!
  5:33pm
Ben Drinken:

How about an insurance quote for Kenny G. SUR!! Ok. I am a wanna be Scotsman and I wear a kilt even though my last name is Goldsmith. I no longer want to be associated with radio, have no desire, I am short even with these boots. Can I get insurance?
  5:36pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks Irwin!
  5:38pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Ben: For someone apparently sick of radio and desiring not to return, we seem to be hearing A LOT about how he's sick of radio and desires not to return. Lead up to a big publicity stunt by Monsieur G?
  5:41pm
Ben Drinken:

@Matt- will we accept him? No. He needs to ask for the cake.
  5:54pm
Ben Drinken:

Kenny G needs to punch me in the head if he wants to return to WFMU.
  5:54pm
Brass Knuckles:

He can suck a bag of dicks for all i care.
  5:55pm
Carmichael:

Boy Brass, you got some hot venom there.
  5:56pm
Brass Knuckles:

Tell it to the volcano.
  5:57pm
marc:

Put some gravy on my Chevy cuz it was too dry 'American Pie' is as long as all of Billie Joels songs!!!!!!
  5:58pm
Matt from Springfield:

Great show Irwin, greater still with my beer!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
  5:59pm
Ben Drinken:

the kimchi is turning out fine
  3:53am
Lew Jones:

Ecstatic Cahoots is in reference to Gatsby smiling at Nick just before the end. Lew Jones Portland. Thanks for the airplay.
