I've seen Greg Demos fall before, but I've never seen Mitch Mitchell play guitar without smoking incessantly. Also noticed they made Kevin swap out his x-rated drums for boring ones on TV.

Maybe that was a polite way of saying "the f**in' 70s." Like "truckin' convoy."
  10:13pm
Julie:

the funkin' 70s. That's the name of your next premium, no ACTUAL funk included
  10:13pm
Destroit:

I totally truckin agree efd
  10:13pm
Droll:

@Doll, If you define "funk" as 70's CC records, he plays more than any station in the lower 48.
  10:13pm
glenn:

an old friend of mine would pick up his neighbour's c.b. whenever he was taping stuff on his stereo, for some still unexplained reason. the steelbender tapes became legend.

miss cheri:

happy 2012 julie,,,
  10:15pm
Julie:

thanks, Cheri, same to you
  10:16pm

  10:22pm
glenn:

p.s. april wine is truckin' awesome.
  10:22pm
Droll:

@Doll, I don't think that was the right kind or amount of enthusiasm for CC, the 70's, or April Wine.
  10:23pm
glenn:

don't forget crowbar, a foot in coldwater, edward bear, five man electrical band.
  10:24pm
Living Doll:

Cancon sounds like a convention.
  10:24pm
PB:

lighthouse
  10:25pm
Julie:

Like Bachmann-Turner overdrive? The great Michelle Bachmann/Ted Turner supergroup?
  10:27pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

re: April Wine it's more like can'tcon.
  10:28pm
Holly in NC:

Hi Evan & all!
Happy 2012!
  10:29pm
glenn:

i disagree 110%. they're very underrated and they put on a smokin' show. i've probably seen them 10 times, starting in 1976, maybe.
  10:32pm
miss cheri:

  10:34pm
glenn:

I stepped away for a moment, and coulda sworn this was GFRR...

Good stuff!
  10:35pm

  11:10pm
Mike sin:

Evan delivers another fine show! You're delivering more heat than my forced-air HVAC system.

Re: "Total Freakout Vol. 33" -- I think it's only the fourth volume in this series, but the first on a vinyl LP (hence "33"). More of these comps are moving to vinyl only because the CDs just don't do the margins anymore... Better to press up a low volume of vinyl and charge a higher premium.

Just thinkin' and ramblin' here...
  11:11pm
Julie:

who knew Frampton was cute under all that hair/ EFD hook me up!
  11:11pm
miss cheri:

julie i'll try to catch your show next week,,,night efd & julie!!!
  11:12pm
Droll:

@MikeSin, And vinyl slows the inevitable creep onto YouTube, where music votes with it's feet to find freedom.
  11:12pm
chris :: toronto:

honestly, who really does a run of cds anymore? really? who buys them?
  11:13pm
Mike sin:

I buy CDs like a rabid muthaf***er.
  11:15pm
Dave B:

shared with Ken earlier. My friend Matt (who looks like Frampton) uses it as his avatar:

Danne D:

Hi Funk Fans :)
What's up EFD :)
Happy New Year everyone :)
  11:16pm
glenn:

i think, but it could be a different guy, that frampton's doing movie makeup now. at least i see the name in the credits of filmsquite a bit.
  11:18pm
glenn:

hey efd, do you know the fathoms? boston's greatest surf band.
  11:18pm
Holly in NC:

Hi Danne D!

Top of the evenin' to ya!
  11:18pm
Danne D:

Hey Holly :)
  11:18pm
chris :: toronto:

happy new year @Danne D and all. @Mike sin would you buy a cd over the vinyl? not me. i don't buy cds anymore at all. when i see them at the retail level i can't believe peeps are interested in them at all.
  11:20pm
Danne D:

Happy New Year, Chris!
  11:21pm
Danne D:

CDs are the best for my long commute to be honest - but I'm also a dinosaur.
  11:21pm
efd:

hi everyone... fell WAY behind on the comments during the luxury ticket bubble bath but will try to catch up!
  11:21pm
Danne D:

In other news, there's a new scout cookie. Why they would name it after a 1982 movie with the following plot I do not know: "Savannah is a wealthy girl who runs away from home and meets two escaped ex-convicts, Boots and Alvie. The two criminals realize who Savannah is, and that a large reward is offered for her, so they try to return the her to her parents. When Savannah's parents respond by charging Boots and Alvie with kidnapping, the ex-cons go back into hiding with the girl."

  11:24pm
Mike sin:

I buy which ever format provides the best sound quality. On a high-end level, both CD and vinyl formats have their pros and cons. Run any size MP3 wide open through high performance three-way speakers, however, and even the most old, drumming damaged ears will hear the vast limitations.
  11:24pm
Living Doll:

There is a Frampton school of cinematic makeup, and Peter won an Oscar. Doubt it's the same guy. But Sissy Spacek did makeup for Phantom of the Paradise
  11:25pm
Holly in NC:

??? If you're talking about a girl scout cookie. Juliette Low founded the GS in Savannah Georgia...
once a GS, always a GS!
  11:26pm
Danne D:

Frampton basically owned the year 1976.
  11:27pm
Holly in NC:

Yay Twerps!
  11:27pm
Danne D:

@Holly, that's true but I mean the whole kidnapping movie thing is kinda looming there ya know.
  11:28pm
Danne D:

Not enough light-hearted movies these days about people facing 40 year prison terms..
  11:29pm
Holly in NC:

Back to Hot Knives! Now that we've all ordered the cd, we can in good conscious dl a copy of the 1976 7in here:
http://www.pukekos.org/2009/03/hot-knives.html
  11:29pm
Mike sin:

CDs *are* a shrinking market, but they still currently compose more than 75% the profit generated in the market. Vinyl = 1%. IMHO, the slow death of CDs will outlast the vinyl "resurgence."
  11:30pm
Holly in NC:

conscience. sorry.
  11:31pm
miss cheri:

evan,,julie & danne,, i just can't stay away,, the funk is pulling me back in,,,
  11:32pm
Yancy Grady:

Hey efd,

Not to get too obsessive but I think the Real Estate album is called Days
  11:32pm
Droll:

CD or MP3, it'll still be mastered with wall-to-wall limiting. They cannot master LPs nearly as loud so the dynamics are better, but they can't get the channel separation of digital... It's your choice, it's all a reproduction.
  11:32pm
Danne D:

Whoa FiveAsh is in the moto-gators? cool :)
  11:34pm
efd:

@Yancy Grady, you are correct! Fixing the playlist now, thanks for the heads-up.

  11:37pm
Danne D:

EFD made that mistake on purpose just to test his commenters :)
  11:37pm
Mike sin:

"CD or MP3, it'll still be mastered with wall-to-wall limiting."

That is driven by the ears/wants of the consumer and the hands of the mastering engineer -- that's not inherent in the format.

in Fiveash related news, his band The Piggies will be opening for the Gories at Maxwells

Stevel:

Please continue with the excellent recording geekery.

efd made the mistake so we would not think him to be perfect.

chris :: toronto:

My ears of crystal are used to crappy CD sound, but my pockets like the value of vinyl
  11:39pm
miss cheri:

evan,,thnx for another great funky show,, see you next week!! bye efd,,julie & danne
  11:40pm
chris :: toronto:

anyone seen the Guided by Voices "Chocolate Boy" 7"? it's thicker than a fisher-price record, and it's brown. can't buy that on a cd.
  11:41pm
Ike:

Love that Gap Dream.
  11:41pm
glenn:

i don't know, i think 30$ for an album is ridiculous, i don't care if it's vinyl or c.d.
  11:41pm
Julie:

one little spot on a cd it won't play, vinyl can survive frisbee like activity
  11:42pm
Julie:

I got a record store day 10" white marble Kate Bush record. I thought it was cool.
  11:42pm
Stevel:

Whence commeth Lost Tribe? Neat!
  11:42pm
Droll:

@Mike, I completely agree it's the fashionable sound of "Now" (just like filter sweep). Vinyl is an end run around the Loudness Wars because they can't make it loud. The secret to loud is soft.
That said, most music is mixed for compression driver earbuds, so it's all the same.
  11:42pm
chris :: toronto:

@glenn I have paid $30 for a cd. I've paid much more for cds. I'll never get it back. with vinyl, you take care of it, you can always re-sell.
  11:46pm
glenn:

in almost 40 years of collecting records, i've probably traded in maybe 10 of them, and i never got more than a quarter of their value back, no matter what shape they were in.
  11:46pm
Stevel:

I dearly love my b/w vinyl LP of The Stranglers/Black and White.
Resale is a good point. CDs have none. Still, my music is decidedly digital given my opportunities to enjoy. (Work, car, late night radio via computer, that kind of stuff.)
  11:47pm
miss cheri:

evan & julie,,you're through commenting with me?
  11:47pm
Dave B:

and its REALLY hard to clean your stash on those puny little CD booklets...
  11:47pm
Mike sin:

@Glenn -- therein lies the rub. Vinyl comps and whatnot for a small niche market are priced that high because the label knows that's what the dedicated folks who are buying these will pay. The idea of expanding the market is dead. Just charge as much as possible to your tried and true "junkies," as it were, and call it a day.
  11:47pm
glenn:

not to mention all the cassettes and open reel tapes.
  11:49pm
Holly in NC:

I made shit ton of $ selling a Sonic Youth 7in that came with an issue of Forced Exposure. Only success story. Plus I would never sell anything I like!
  11:49pm
Stevel:

Dave B FTW
  11:50pm
Danne D:

bye cheri
  11:50pm
Rickwaukee:

I wish they'd bring back the long box
  11:50pm
glenn:

holly nailed it. i scout the used bins, and don't find very much, because people keep the good stuff, for the most part.
  11:51pm
Julie:

UGH the horror of the long box
  11:53pm
12539:

EFD, from my quiet perch I say, Another week well done.
  11:53pm
Dave B:

the... horror...

the... horror...
  11:53pm
Julie:

"good stuff" Is extremely relative
  11:54pm
Dave B:

K. NOW I'm out! see ya!
  11:54pm
glenn:

hmmmm. the long box is an unfamiliar term to me.
  11:54pm
Droll:

In the grand scheme of being a musician, the biggest threat is recorded music itself, not the format. How do you compete with a free version of yourself?
  11:55pm
miss cheri:

efd,,julie & danne i love ya all
  11:55pm
Mike Sin:

Evan -- As usual, I had a great time listening!
  11:55pm
Danne D:

Thanks for a great show, Evan! Until next week everyone :)
  11:56pm
glenn:

blow people away playing in bars, and hope they're drunk enough to buy stuff from the merch booth, rather than going home and downloading it.
  11:56pm
yair Yona (Tel Aviv, Israel,Earth,Milky Way):

Efd,that's a great set. Perfect wake up music for those who woke up at 06:10 at the other side of the world
  11:57pm
Holly in NC:

Thank you, Evan!
  11:57pm
Yancy Grady:

Efd,

Killed it. As usual. Good night and great show
  11:57pm

Long boxes were insane and wasteful, yet thinking of them makes me nostalgic.
  11:57pm
efd:

  11:59pm
Stevel:

Oh thank GOD I put on my head phones! This is great.
  11:59pm
Julie:

  11:59pm
T-Zero:

@glenn: Nice to know I'm not the only one who didn't know what a longbox is/was.
  11:59pm
