A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

the latest news about the sopa bill is that Obama will MOST LIKELY NOT sign it into law if the bill passes congress. http://mashable.com/2012/01/16/obama-sopa-position/ seems consistent with a white house that invited FMU's own Kenny G to speak about the pro's of piracy, plagiarism and appropriation.

Patrick:

@ mike sin, i dont disagree with you. im not saying that im pro piracy, and the Obama administration is not taking a pro piracy stance either, they are saying that the bill could get in the way of job creation, through American invention and ingenuity... my nod to kenny was more tongue in cheek, considering the slack he got from both the left and right for that appearance at the White House. i do think that Kenny G makes some interesting points, and his stance on it as a possible tool for education is one of them. i have been slowly working my way through his most recent book and there are plenty of things that are over the top, but he also makes good points. im glad that the guy exists.
  11:34am
Brian in UK:

Gotta cut & run. Dada for now. Enjoy the West Coast, trouble.
  11:38am
Patrick:

im also glad that this conversation exists around this unbelievably anti first amendment bill.
  11:43am
Nathan:

The bill sucks. We've got the DMCA and safe harbors, surely that should be enough and has been enough, without any legislation that creates further bars to expression on the internet. I'm not a fan of piracy, but the companies whom sponsor these bills should innovate rather than legislate their way out of their problems.
  11:46am
Mike Sin:

@Patrick -- all points taken, and I liked reading your clarification. The comments page does lend itself to more "hit and run" statements that can be misconstrued... which I was just guilty of doing. As stated, I just don’t like the draconian nature of this bill, but I do indeed have major problems with the amount of piracy and copyright infringement on the internet especially from foreign sites… That said, I do enjoy all of Kenny G’s perspectives. I just get a bit unnerved when one’s stance on a bill such as SOPA gets painted with black-and-white strokes, as it were.
  11:50am
Parq:

I strongly suspect that SOPA in its current form is a bait-and-switch. The sponsors will make a big show of seeming to cave, and will offer a less draconian bill. What they'll offer will do plenty to restrict free information, and might have been opposed if they'd offered it first-thing. By instead leading with an outrageous proposal, they're setting us up to look at the final one and say, "Oh, that's okay then, I guess we can live with that."
  11:51am
annie:

exactly what happened to the "food safety" bill
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am
trouble:

until our government officials are not bought and sold by private large money enterprise ( ie we need a campaign funding restriction bill NOW) we will continue to have 'legislation' that is mildly hiding its point: letting big business remain big and powerful, making $ hand over fist. i am not a piracy fan, as an artist we should get paid for what we do, but that system does also not exist in the present world. ciao kitties see you in two weeks
