A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

@Magda - yes, I did hear something on our local WETA classical station recently about International Jazz Day being organized by I think Herbie Hancock if I remember right...
  9:45am
Magda:

@ van- That's great. I have to say this show turned me on to all things Coltrane. On record day I was in Boston and grabbed a Coltrane record. I plan on playing for mellow mornings on the weekend.
  9:48am
Capo Strano:

@Magda http://www.un.org/apps/news/story.asp?NewsID=41880&Cr=culture&Cr1 Before I even heard her play any Coltrane on her show I told Trouble she was a veritable Coltrane in her comprehensiveness.

@Capo Strano - Haha it's wonderful. I have to say I am do like Dave Brubeck. Jazz in general is something I can enjoy home and shed the day away to. Coltrane is now is certainly something I am a fan of. Trouble played some Alice Coltrane a few weeks back and it was like the soundtrack spring, we all want to hear.

  10:02am

I have no doubt there are greedy club owners love music and art. They just don't want to pay for it.
  10:03am

Even the former owner of 1st Ave justified paying his workers sub-standard wages because they were "seasonal" employees. And he's a good one.

When I play live music, I usually lose money (due to cab fares), save a drink ticket or two. When I dj, I make $50-$100 (if it's not a favor for a friend's club) plus usually unlimited drinks. Then again, my dj'ing can be considered more accessible then my live playing (but only marginally).

True enough, DCPat, re: Velvet Lounge. They've started having DJ nights downstairs though, which potentially wrecks more "delicate" performances upstairs... Plenty of BSI blood has been shed in there. Great sound.

Holy crap. I've become a topic of discussion on the FMU board! Surreal!

Hi Cecile, Still B/P, and all!!! Yep, my wife and I are opening a place in Putnam, CT. It's first and foremost a music/art venue, with food and drink offered. Our goal, as SBP mentioned, is to have live music and local/regional art whenever possible. And we WILL pay the artists as often as possible. My goal is to have the food and drink be the revenue and the door/ticket prices go directly to the artists. I won't lie, if there are any musicians that want to do a charity case for us and play for free, I won't turn them away. We're looking at opening in the first week of June (liquor license takes forever in CT).
  10:44am
Brian in UK:

All good wishes with The Stomping Ground. Guess it might be some time afore I get there!!!

I dig Digable Planets. Miss this album. Cuz I'm cool like that.
  10:52am
fishmonkeystew:

Thanks, you guys. Our main purpose is to introduce new music and art to the area. We're geographically smack dab centered between Boston, Providence, Northampton, and NYC. It's wicked scary, but the local support/buzz has been amazing. And the talent that has been inquiring is quite humbling. It's a tiny little place, but has fantastic acoustics and looks pretty sharp. The building is 100 years old, and the space has high, tin ceilings. Loads of old, nicely restored wood work and a nice long bar. We bought all the assets for a song, as the previous owners horribly mismanaged it and just wanted to get out.
Please send any budding musicians/artists our way. They can contact me at terry@the-stomping-ground.com. We're only about 3 hours from NYC. Not too bad for a touring band.
Ok, I'm done with the plugging. Sorry 'bout that Trouble. Great show, as usual.
You guys rule.

Haven't heard this digable planets track in about 17 years.

Parq:

Anybody else find Spanish the perfect language for hip hop?
  10:55am
Cecile:

Yes!
  10:57am
Cecile:

Okay, I have to say I'm still perplexed that Ann Powers called massively popular hip-hop artist Pitbull a "blue-eyed rapper." He's Cuban, and Latin influence has always been a huge part of hip-hop. Just bizarre.
  10:58am
Cecile:

Uncle Derrick!
  10:58am
dc pat:

actually I have to go with Portuguese...
  10:59am
Cecile:

He is a rapper with blue (more grayish, actually) eyes, but he's not a "blue-eyed rapper."
  11:00am
Cecile:

MC Solaar makes a good case for French, and those Italian guys on Billy Jam's show were pretty fierce.

It is interesting, I'm not much of a fan of British rappers in general, but love Irish ones.
  11:01am
dc pat:

yep, Irish (accent) is up there too. haven't heard anyone rapping in Irish yet.
  11:02am
the interwebs:

He (Pitbull) was quoted in an article in the Miami Times that being “white with blue eyes” made his journey into the rap music industry a little difficult as he didn’t fit the typical mold for a rapper.
  11:03am
Jennique:

This bird man sounds depressed. Maybe staring at the sun too long?
  11:03am
fishmonkeystew:

This sounds like my back yard. The Dawn Chorus can wake you right up.
  11:04am
Cecile:

But to me, being brought up in the Latin/rap culture so heavily precludes that title. I don't consider Eminem a blue-eyed rapper, either. Vanilla Ice, on the other hand....:(

Cecile, for me, the touchstone of Latin rap is Vico C. You can hear his influence clearly on the Calle 13 record that came out in 2010, "Entran Los que Quieran."

LOVE Orishas.
  11:45am
RecessionWretch:

the Calle 13 record was, IMHO, one of the strongest that came out in 2010. Solid from start to finish; hits hard on the subject of class differences (good for MayDay) again and again, in Puerto Rico and in the larger social context.
  11:46am
Cecile:

it was funny - I was looking for Vito C stuff on emusic, and Calle 13 showed up as "if you like A, you might like B."
