Favoriting May 9, 2012: remembering MCA, with special in-studio guest Tim Sommer

photo: Lester Cohen

"In October of 1981, two Stuyvesant High School students sat in my dorm room and asked for help getting their band together. I told them that the best way to turn a 'theoretical' band into a real band was to get a gig, because once you had a show booked, you HAD to get your act together. So I got on the phone and got them a gig. One of those two kids died today. He was always a sweet, funny, charming, intense young man, and I am enormously proud to have helped him and called him a friend."

Brookly was a band that MCA had between Paul's B and Check Your Head I believe. Really cool instrumental stuff I guess almost in a Liquid Liquid vain. I'll have to get some over to you
  9:55pm
john:

Somewhere around here is the cassette which has the Cookie Puss I taped off WNYU in 1983.
  9:57pm
Tom Carvel:

@johnnykevlar: I was an American teen who lived in the UK in the early 70s, and I had to special order over half the US top 40 if I wanted to hear it. Soul, rock, pop -- much of it did not get on the charts or the radio in the UK. (And nice versa) Nowadays there is less divergence, but still some...

evan--you don't have the tune "brass monkey" tonight?

Evan's busy doing a great show right now.

Hey everyone! Listening before on my iPad--Tim Sommer is one of those WFMU interviews where I never heard of the guest, but after listening greatly thankful that person was on. Great memories of MCA and the Beasties, wonderful show.

Apropos of nothing, back in h.s. one of my best male friends nicknamed me Fudgie the Whale. Since I was not fat, nor have I ever been Black, not sure why.

Er, nor did I put out.

But Fudgie is a *most* excellent ice cream cake!
  10:08pm

2 off-topic notes:
1) @efd sad news today as Carl Beane, the P.A. Announcer at Fenway Park, died in an auto accident today

2) The Capitals have forced a game seven vs the Rangers to take place on Saturday night
  10:08pm

Makes perfect sense, then.

Fudgie is strictly a back door whale. No connection!

  10:16pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

Just exactly what is a "fly skimmy"?
  10:17pm

GW:

here comes tim sommer
  10:20pm
joe:

I stand correct the band was actually as far back as before Paul's "Adam joined forces with some old friends like Tom Cushman and recorded under the band name Brooklyn. Recently, studio recordings of this band have been circualting among collectors. The most memorable riff to come out of this collaboration was what would eventually become the bass line for the Check Your Head song "Gratitude.""
  10:20pm
drewo:

Certainly sounds Rubinesque
  10:22pm

This album was the second production job Rubin did with them -- the 1985 Beasties EP was Rubin also...

Hi Matt from S! Speaking of sampling etc, what is up with Tuf America? Takes 20+ years to make a claim? Trouble Funk needs to dissociate, and pronto.

  10:28pm
The James B:

@ David B - don't mock me
  10:28pm
David B.:

  10:29pm
Matt from Springfield:

I looked up the "Brass Monkey" drink when an older guy at work mentioned it--evidently he was referring to a pre-mixed drink they used to sell; the Net mentioned that, but also another "brass monkey"--they said you take a 40, drink it down to the label, then pour ORANGE JUICE in the rest of the bottle! WTF?! G-ross!!
  10:29pm
Joe D.:

perhaps you could shed some light on this Tim... is this song about the Brass Monkey COCKTAIL (40oz malt liquor filled with OJ to the neck) or Brass Monkey the pre-mixed can of cheap alcohol drink? Been arguing about this for literally my entire life.
  10:29pm
Matt from Springfield:

Joe Duffy! Jinx! :)

Barkevious Shabazz:

  10:35pm
?:

i can't thank you enough,,evan!!!
  10:36pm
Matt from Springfield:

It seems pretty much orange juice in every case--sometimes with multiple hard liquors, other times malt liquor. Given the Beastie Boys fondness of OE 800, it's prob the latter.

Matt from Springfield:

I was a 80s baby and 90s kid, didn't listen to the Beasties growing up, but was a fan of the Bloodhound Gang. While they have an even greater level of "perversity" in their music, their aesthetics borrowed heavily from the Beasties, so I'd like again to send my gratitude to the Beasties for their direct, and especially indirect influences on music.

@G: Does cheri comment on a cell phone or something? Using a comment because it's the easier punctuation to press? That's my going theory...

Ugh such an awesome lineup- saw tragedy in SF great stuff.

I would call but there is no way I can make it to manhattan or brooklyn to see any of these shows, it's like 40 dollars in train fares for a free show

yeaaah you can't front on that

Danne is a Mountie :)
  11:09pm
Danne D:

I'm too lazy to do the alias thing. I think I used to use a nose when I first did smilies, but lost track of when I changed that. Then again, my introduction to smilies and their meanings was on a Plato IV terminal...
  11:09pm
G:

that was said with virtual admiration :)

G:

bbl
  11:11pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: That works too, but with text only and lacking the human interaction, verbal cues and emphasis, I use quotes with my name to give the feel of "me" telling you a joke in conversation. I use pseudonyms if I want to give the feel of that person/thing/whatevs "hopping into" the comment board with their opinion on something :)
  11:11pm
Danne D:

whoa - who usually uses this bed music? Maybe Laura?
  11:12pm
Matt from Springfield:

@G: OH DEAR LORD!!! Order in the universe is unraveling....!!!!

:-)
  11:12pm
Danne D:

I don't get the mountie reference?
  11:12pm
G:

@Danne: I go through phases of writing rules. I think several years ago for awhile I never used G (my initial), always something else. Other times I go weeks trying only to use G. Other times I go by what seems best for the overall situation. Call me mercurial, flexible, or something...
  11:12pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: This is one of the Beastie Boys more popular instrumental tracks. I've heard it many times before.
  11:12pm

About now is where I should throw one of these into the mix: 8)

@Danne - it's yet another great song. Really, there's been no post-1960s "mainstream" artist with such a consistently great body of work who also managed to maintain non-mainstream cred.

Edward "Chief" Platt:

I'm the illest motherfucker from here to Gardena.

Danne D:

random thought - does anyone actually designate time correctly anymore? Had a webinar today that the e-mail said would start at 3PM EST (it's EDT now) - end random pointless observation.
  11:15pm
Danne D:

@Holly - except for Weird Al
  11:16pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: Re EST, I think people don't realize that "Standard" is only outside of DST.

@ Danne - Good point!

Look at the crazy things that happen when FMU makes their goal - all of a sudden they can expand the empire and add staff :) Good stuff. Sadly I am not remotely qualified.

EFD - you are doing a fine job!

And this is my favorite BB track :) One of the 5 best videos ever IMO.

Sabotage: Best Show that was never made.

I'm Buddy Rich when I fly off the handle!
  11:32pm
Joe D.:

if you can find a more 90's artifact than the aggressive in-line skate video me and my cousin made soundtracked to "Sabotage"... actually you can't. There is nothing more 90's ON THIS EARTH. Except for every other skate video that did the exact same thing.
  11:33pm
Holly in NC:

@Joe I love CYH almost as much as PB, but was picking an MCA-specific song. @Danne agree re Sabotage video (right up there with Weird Al's Smells Like;-))
  11:33pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks for the Beastie Boys tunes. RIP Adam Yauch. Do you have "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" coming up?
  11:33pm
Josh Hamilton:

Oh yeah!
  11:34pm
Joe D.:

we also used to use the "Disco Call' -"oowee owee" as a greeting/high sign (cops are coming)/all purpose annoying noise without having any clue as to its origin/providence
  11:35pm
Danne D:

@Holly probably most partial to "Trapped in the Drive Thru" 1st and "White and Nerdy" 2nd for videos (there's an awesome version with the 1st take run-through done with Donnie Osmond)
  11:36pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Joe D: Yours could be the most 90s, if it was taped on VHS, with obvious grain, occasional lip synching to the lyrics, and you wore C.Webb Nikes...:)
  11:37pm
Thierry:

Great tracks! Great remembrance on your part, efd; maybe a handshake with Adam WarRock at the end of the program, to symbolize transmission?
  11:38pm
Holly in NC:

@Danne - I dunno, when I'm in the right mood the 'marbles in my mouth' section of Smells Like still gets me in falling down doubled over hysterics!

A worthy man and band to devote the show too. Itz Sabotage!! Sa Sa..
I would love you two wackers to do another reunion show only on that show burn up the airwaves with all the great bands from the old NYU days, including some of those famous Sommer's screams during the introductions. Thanks for the memories my old friends who lived in my radio and now my memory and maybe even on some old cassettes i still got lying around... Tony R
  11:39pm
Joe D.:

it was on the micro-vhs you had to put INSIDE another thing to play... there was no lip syncing though...

I also used the word "Providence" when I meant to use the word "Provenance"

  11:43pm
G:

@Danne 11:14 -- I work 100% online, so time format is now a pet peeve. Just say "eastern time". Every dran week I get many, many emails that say EDT when it's EST, or EST when it's EDT. If you can't keep standard and daylight straight, just leave it out, because it is not important anyway. -- But bureaucrats love acronyms, because they labor under the delusion that smart people will be fooled into thinking an acronym user is smart and knowledgeable. NOT true, especially when the acronym addict constantly bungles the acronyms.

Danne I believe Noah is putting something together for the Coffee Break webshow... he usually releases on Wed but seems like it's been pushed back... he has some CRAZY demos/Bsides/unlreleased stuff I've never even HEARD of. Serious shit. Stuff on 15 year old CDrs and DATs. Be sure to check his soundcloud page in the next few days. It will definitely be a mind-blower.

My favorite Beastie Boys songs are It's Like That and My Adidas. Just kidding. Can you dig it? I knew that you could.

@Joe D :) Up, Noah has good stuff on the cloud - everyone needs to check it out :)
  11:49pm
Danne D:

@Holly - I will say that a one-moment wonder has to be Weird Al's "Eat It" video which debuted on MTV right after (I think) a concert with Michael Jackson or some such. Totally thought it was the original when it started - um, until the dude spits out his coffee. Great moment.

Oh! I also want to take this opportunity to thank the Beastie Boys for Andy Samberg/The Lonely Island raps! True, they mostly just imitate contemporary "black raps", but there are some masterpieces like "Lazy Sunday" that I just realized wouldn't have been possible without Beastie influence!

EFD before I miss the chance let me say thank you for doing this. With out sounding corny for someone like myself the Beastie Boys mean and have meant alot. The lose of MCA was a huge blow to me and this was really cool to have. Thank You

I used to sit around and drink beer with Hugo Largo. People, the 80s in NYC were fun...that is the only consoling thing about getting kind of old. Heard the Beastie Boys at The Kitchen, where misc bands played to a filled small room. Interspersed with video, dance and performance art. Art crap but I like it.It was always so much fun to hear their hits blasting from radio...It was like- wow they are so surprisingly big and so fun and it was great!! I miss seeing Adam and his spouse and baby walking around this particular neighborhood around being normal at the end of the 20th c. Great show. Thanks for reminding about this time and playing great songs and cheering me up....

DJ MOJO:

The story is incorrect. I went to Mudd a lot but never worked there, I worked at Berlin, Pyramid and many other clubs. The only time any therw eggs at me was when I was at Pyramid in the early 80's...it happened once and never again and I never got hit. Also for the record I've always hated that song as it was written as a dig against me and in the face of the 30+ years I've worked in NYC, and the life long Love I've had for a city I was born and raised in.
