A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

I sorry, but I can't make out any of the handwriting on the mushroom sketch. When we were kids, we had a 78 with a Popeye story. I think the story was about it raining hamburgers on Wimpy.

i had always thought i was imagining that bluto's original name was brutus..nice to know i'm not crazy

I just bought Popeye at the grocery store for 5 bucks. I've been on a Robert Altman kick.

Hello trouble & sensation seekers. There are some wonderful words used in the mushroom world like fimbriate - fringed; fugacious - short-lived; sessile - without a stem

@annie
No, the original and true name of the character (created by E.C. Segar in 1932) is Bluto.
It was only for a brief period (a couple of decades after Segar died) that a crappy TV version of the strip gave him that stupid new name. Here's more info:

heyo - been interrupted - was there a punchline to the the chicken / universe question?
  10:49am

what about a chicken alarm system? A raccoon sneaks in and a motion detector lights up the coop like a rave. Solar powered of course and the neighbors will love it for it's simple charm.

Trouble: I am calling child services!!!
  11:07am
Jennique:

There is no answer to the chicken/universe question. It is the sound of one hand clapping, or the sound of a tree falling in a forest with no one to hear it, or the sound of an imaginary chicken coop door closing.
  11:07am
jersey boy in nicaragua:

make a balanced weighted shelf for your chickens to roost on, when the last chicken roosts, the shelf drops a bit, releasing the latch on the door, allowing it to close. rube goldberg would love it.

@trouble icepack There are commercial electronic chicken coop doors. http://www.automaticchickencoopdoor.com/ Not cheap. We once tried to build an electronic cat door to prevent one of the cats from delivering presents of live rodents. It didn't work too well. It was supposed to recognize when the cat has a chipmunk. It either let everything in or nothing.
  11:22am
