Listener comments!

Lucas:

Hello Evan and listeners!!
  9:04pm
McG:

Greetings for, Wilmington DE
  9:05pm
McG:

SteveL:

Neat opener.

Endless Sea did not catch me on the first few listens of New Values. I was more interested in the up-tempo stuff. Iggy is such a great story teller. A voice of sincerity and an amazing performer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm
efd:

Hi Lucas, McG and SteveL! McG, I think offering greetings TO a state is also appropriate, so no worries.

SteveL, that song caught my ear from the beginning just because it was so arrestingly different. I usually go more for the uptempo stuff myself (shocker, right?) but there's enough else going on there to hold my interest.
  9:16pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

"New Values," always a fave in the Shabazz household. Out of print in vinyl seemingly forever in the states. "I'm Bored." Crucial stuff.
  9:16pm
steve:

hey all!
  9:18pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

Great Diggle. 81. Whadda year.
  9:21pm
SteveL:

"I'm Bored" is in a top catagory of its own in my world of hits.

What album was "I'm Living on Dog Food" ("Dog Food"?) on? Madison Wis., Merlyns, always played that tune before shows. It was such a great, strange song. Not the kind of thing you heard just anywhere.
  9:33pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

Looks like dog food is on his solo Soldier, with the terrific Knockin em down in the city. With Glen Matlock!
  9:34pm
12539:

Apparently the (Rothko) subtitle is a reference to the painter, Mark Rothko.
  9:34pm
Minnesota Jeff:

Just arrived and have my fingers crossed for EFD to play some 70's deep cut that will blast my mind apart.
  9:36pm
Mike East:

Good evening friends! Hooray for 1800 band and one of my favorite chord progressions!
  9:39pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

I'd put this up with Donna by 10cc. Ace.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm
efd:

Hi Mike East! What is the numerical notation for that progression? (Not that it will mean anything to this drummer.)

MN Jeff, way to put the pressure on!

12539, I was wondering if that was the Rothko in question - thanks!

Barkevious, given your name I was hoping you'd come through with the Living On Dog Food info. Good job.
  9:42pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

Always glad to pitch in.
  9:43pm
Mike East:

not sure the numbers...its a D C G D kinda thing. 1 7 4 1? I'm one of those "by ear" musicians.
  9:44pm
12539:

efd - there's a blog post making reference to Diggle's memoir and his painter brother, if you're interested.

thanks, I will take a look post-show. And especially THANK YOU for using a short url! :)

john:

Hey Evan! Great set! Sadly, last night's rainout means one less special guest at tomorrow's Knuckleball sorta premiere--Dickey can't make it, dammit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm
efd:

hey john! Damn, that's too bad about the rainout! Hopefully the movie itself will offset his absence.

Barkevious Shabazz:

Marshmallow Staircase giving 1800Band some serious competition in the band name battle.
  9:56pm
john:

We're looking forward to it. Will still have Niekro and Wakefield for Q&A, and a few Dickey autographed balls to give away, though they will not be available for questions.

Car Wash=Nasty image. Very Sharpling-esque.

I maintain it is not uncalled for in this instance.

Holly in NC:

Hi efd & all! Anyone else associate Endless Sea with the movie Dogs in Space? Ok movie, great soundtrack
  10:06pm
SteveL:

These are stressful times. A warning is quite generous.
  10:07pm
SteveL:

Hi Holly.
  10:25pm
eddy:

Joining the show late tonight and my first thought upon seeing "Endless Sea" on the playlist was: "Used to great effect in Dogs in Space" You beat me to the punch, Holly!
  10:26pm
eddy:

Anyone else notice that Eddy Current song ("Memory Lane") being used in an AT&T ad at the moment? Weird.
  10:27pm
Joe D.:

Good for them. Hope they got some good $$$. Das Racist is getting those K-Mart bucks too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
efd:

Hi eddy! I guess I'm the only one who hasn't seen Dogs In Space. Now I'm curious.

Hadn't noticed the ECSR song in that commercial, but I probably will now!
  10:34pm
Holly in NC:

Hi Eddy! Great minds... ;-)
& I recommend checking Spider Bags on Terre's show, everyone.
  10:36pm
john:

Evan, there's at least one other person on the board who hasn't seen the movie.
  10:36pm
Julie:

keep forgetting what day it is! i must go back and hear a song called "dark was the night and cold was the ground!"
  10:37pm
Holly in NC:

efd, you'll need to get over your Michael Hutchence aversion
  10:39pm
eddy:

Iggy's "Dog Food" is also on the Dogs in Space soundtrack, of course.

Evan: When Dogs in Space was finally released on DVD a few years ago, it came with a bonus, related doco, called Livin' on Dog Food, which is about the Melbourne post-punk scene. I've yet to see it but apparently it's great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
efd:

I clearly have no idea what Dogs In Space actually is even about.
  10:40pm
Mr. Obvious:

I think this guy wants to tear it down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
efd:

marathon premium idea: 'What's That Again?,' with songs that just repeat the title over and over again like "Devastator" and "Tear It Down."
  10:45pm
Rickwaukee:

great idea. great idea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
efd:

Julie, how can you forget what day it is?! Your show's on later! :)
In any case, 'dark was the night...' was the name of the album, not the song.
  10:46pm
SteveL:

Nor have I seen Dogs etc., although I will pay attention from here on out.

efd: I think its about dogs who are no longer on Earth.
  10:46pm
Marmalade Kitty:

Hola efd!
  10:47pm
mildred:

Really digging the show tonight! Thank you EFD
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
efd:

thank YOU, mildred!

Hola back, M. Kitty!
  10:50pm
Julie:

@EFD hence, thinking about show, thought it was Monday, forgot EFD night! I'll get the hang of this yet!
  10:52pm
eddy:

Evan: I agree with Holly - forget Hutchence and try to enjoy the movie. Dogs in Space takes place in and around the Little Bands scene of Melbourne (kinda sorta similar to what was happening with No Wave in NY). Many of the original players have bit parts in the film; some of the bands reformed for it.
The real-life version of the band Hutchence fronts in the film, The Ears, are quite good, although they released very little in their time. Essential listening: a single called "Scarecrow".
  10:54pm
Marmalade Kitty:

It's Thursday here, julie.. 03:55early!
  10:54pm
Danne D:

Hey Funk Fans :)
Hey EFD :)

Hey Julie - your premium arrived today :)
  10:55pm
Julie:

ah danne so YOU'RE the one who got it ;)
  10:56pm
Danne D:

Can't say I'm surprised that Barkevious is an authority on dog food :)
  10:56pm
Marmalade Kitty:

It's f**i*ng late!
  11:00pm
Danne D:

Hey Barkevious is Rokevious Watkins of the St. Louis Rams any relation? :)
  11:01pm
Danne D:

My entertainment is set for the weekend so I'll let others win :) I'm heading to (outside) DC for the Bengals game on Sunday :)
  11:01pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

Nomnomnom slurp. Tasty.
  11:02pm
Danne D:

EFD has a very senior friendly set of tickets available this week :)
  11:09pm
Danne D:

Looks like my desperate flailings won't be quite enough to finish any better than 3rd in the Evan Funk Davies Happy How Do You Do To You Fantasy Baseball League. John and Aharon are slugging it out for the top spot with just a little over 2 weeks to go.
  11:15pm
Marmalade Kitty:

Woohoo! drag city artist's coming to town next month!
  11:15pm
john:

Gosh, I'm just hoping I have a pitcher or two who hasn't heard the dread words "shut down" during the next two weeks!
  11:17pm
Danne D:

@John you are very modest sir - you're crushing this thing :)
  11:17pm
SteveL:

Many good covers lately. This Obits is right up there.

SteveL:

Damn that Dickies clock!!
  11:33pm

Gigantor kicks ass. I have this Dickies on a 10" white vinyl, aforesaid bitches.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
efd:

little known fact: every non-current artist I play has their own clock.
  11:34pm
SteveL:

Is it necessary to clean those clocks, on occasion? I do abhor violence.
  11:35pm
SteveL:

First time I hear Gigantor, I was pretty sure my roommate had the speed set too high.

I think the Moody Blues is the musical intersection b/w Julie and Clay Pigeon :)
  11:39pm
Julie:

Does Clay play them? Frank O'Toole is a big MB fan :)
  11:42pm
Danne D:

http://wfmu.org/artistbrowser.php?action=artist&artist=The+Moody+Blues&artist_id=19307

Surprisingly it looks like the answer is no. I figured with his prog tendencies that the Moodies would be a natural.

It does seem that a certain DJ dominates that list ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm

I played that wacky War Of The Worlds thing from the '70s that Justin Hayward sings on, does that count?

SteveL:

Good God can Mould write good songs.
  11:45pm
Julie:

@EFD I don't even know what that is
  11:45pm

@EFD yep saw that :)

  11:48pm
Danne D:

This sounds a lot like another song and it's killing me right now...
  11:49pm

@DD - those Big Bang guys?
  11:51pm
Danne D:

@Rickwaukee It's killing me...it's some pretty popular song though.

that was a nice track from "the Greatest Band in the History of Recorded Music"

Barkevious Shabazz:

Does the van have "Free Candy" scrawled on the side?

@DD - reminded me of the "rap" bit in One Week by Bare Naked Ladies

Julie:

loving this!

great song
  11:55pm
Danne D:

@Rickwaukee yeah, but no. I don't know if it's like some DMB song or something - it'll come to me eventually.

Right now focusing on enjoying the last bits of EFD's show ;)
  11:58pm
Danne D:

Have a good night everyone :)
Thanks for great music as always EFD :)

Lookin' forward to listening to your premium Julie :) Have a good show (alas I have to do archive) :(
