Hi everyone! Please enjoy this re-run of the July 4 Indepen-Dance party! WFMU is close to being fully operational again, but I wasn't able to broadcast from the station tonight so we'll enjoy this show together!
  9:07pm
SteveL:

The return to normalcy is appreciated, even if not live. Always good to get things back on the air.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm
efd:

Thanks SteveL! One step at a time...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm
efd:

And by the way, next week I'll be doing the Singles Going Seventies show that I'd planned to do tonight. I didn't get all those records together for nothing!
  9:09pm
G:

Let me get my temporal scanner from the bathroom. Think the fever may be comin on...
  9:10pm
G:

I guess this playlist began with something from the 70s :P
  9:11pm
SteveL:

G: As it most usually does!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm
efd:

Hi G! Yes, I can guarantee that this show started with the '70s! :)
  9:20pm
Skirkie:

Oh damn, I remember those fireworks. They were pretty cool.
  9:22pm
Christina:

Awesome show, Evan!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm
efd:

Hey Skirkie! Yep, time to flash back to a less stormy time for a few hours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm
efd:

Thanks Christina! Glad to have you listening in.
  9:27pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

Glad to hear the pile from this week is becoming the pile for next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm
efd:

Hey Barkevious! You bet, I wasn't going to let hours of pulling 45s go to waste!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm
efd:

Plus this is an all-vinyl show, at least, if not all singles.
  9:30pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

Noice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm
efd:

This song takes on a certain poignancy tonight, I'd say.
  9:37pm
Skirkie:

I made pepperoni bread and went to a barbeque in Kearny on the 4th. It was such a nice day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm
efd:

Mmm, pepperoni bread.
  9:39pm
G:

Less than four months ago. Tempus fugit.

I was with relatives in Maryland the first ten days of July, and wasn't listening to radio much during the heavy social-calendar evenings...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm
efd:

G, I hope those relatives (and you, for that matter) weren't hit hard by the storm. And of course that goes for everyone reading this.
  9:48pm
Skirkie:

I encountered fish on the sidewalk in Secaucus today.

  9:50pm
G:

This time the Maryland connections were just skirted and were fine... My uncle up in Delaware near the coast lost power for awhile, but it's back now...

After Irene, my brother lost power for a week, but the other side of his street was on a different grid, so everyone just bought extension cords and ran them across the street to the their facing neighbor's house to save all the groceries in fridges and freezers.

If only some of the current NY/NJ issues were so easy to fix with a little cooperation...
  9:51pm
kate:

way to keep disco alive in this time of trouble efd!
  9:52pm
G:

We actually lost power here in central Brooklyn from 9:15 to 11:50 last night, naturally right after I'd decided we were in the clear and put away the flashlights :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm
efd:

Skirkie, amazing. G, that's an inspiring story! I heard about the late blackouts in Brooklyn last night - glad the didn't last very long.

Hi Kate! I figured maybe this would help take people's minds off of reality for a little while....
  9:54pm
kiemzi:

just got back to hear "native new yorker" come on and it really hit the spot, what with all this madness going on!
  9:57pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

Always clean your vinyl recordings with our patented SNATZOTEK cloth, available with other fine SNATZO products at your local hi-fi outlet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm
efd:

Hi Kiemzi! Yeah, I forgot there was that little "civic pride" set in this show. I guess it was kinda timely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm
efd:

Barkevious, are you reading off of a Revillos record? :)
  9:59pm
kiemzi:

it's great! glad you're doin' ok and powered up, even!
  9:59pm
Patrick:

glad you are playing this tonight EFD, never got a chance to catch it live or on the archive, some great stuff!! hope FMU is back live soon!
  10:00pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

Going from memory from RevUp, one of the greatest. Nice catch!
  10:01pm
kate:

disco always does :)
  10:03pm
Danne D:

Hi Funk Fans :)
So since this is a rerun, efd can comment more I see :D

This was back when I still thought I had a chance to win the EFD fantasy league :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm
efd:

Hey Patrick! Yeah, when Ken asked me to pick a show to repeat I thought this might be a good choice since a lot of people were busy celebrating July 4th on July 4th.
  10:03pm
SteveL:

Is The Quick any relation to The Quick with Danny Wilde?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm
efd:

Pretty sure that is a whole other Quick.
  10:09pm
SteveL:

Re. The Quick: yeah, thought so, but hey, styles do change. You familiar with the Quick that I refer to?
  10:09pm
Skirkie:

I don't mean to explicitly tweet via comment section, but I've been mostly drunk for days.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm
efd:

SteveL, yes, pretty sure their LP was reissued a couple of years ago?

Hi Danne, yes, better days for sure!
  10:13pm
G:

@Danne: What a coincidence, July 4th was also back when it still seemed theoretically possible that a certain Valentine-managed team could turn things around and meet preseason penant forecasts! Well, for the Sox, Yanks, O's, et al., there's always 2013.
  10:13pm
SteveL:

Ahhh, that's good news, although I have a pretty sharp copy.
  10:14pm
G:

Has everyone heard the Sandy-Yankee jokes already?

Sandy, biggest NYC power outage since the playoffs.

Sandy, costliest NYC disaster since the A-Roid ten-year contract.

Etc. etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
efd:

Excellent point, G. Although I for one would not have thought on July 4 that the O's would actually make the playoffs.

I also heard "change the storm's name to A-Rod, then it won't hit anything."
  10:18pm
Danne D:

I went with the "If the Jets would just play Tebow, the storm will suddenly turn away at the last moment" theme
  10:19pm
G:

Well, the O's were in first for much of the first half of the season, but not till September was it clear that was not a weird streaky fluke.

Between my Detroit childhood, New York adulthood, and Maryland relatives, I seem ghettoized in the AL East!
  10:20pm
G:

Donna!
  10:21pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

"Records and Filmworks.". Ho ho. Is that Gene Simmons doing the greasy voiceover?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
efd:

Bite your tongue, Barkevious! That was the super-classy MISTER Frankie Crocker, the Chief Rocker!
  10:23pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

I recline corrected.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
efd:

:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
efd:

It's funny, I'm realizing I pulled many of these same songs for the Singles Going Seventies show! I think I'll have to put some of them back, no reason to play them two weeks in a row.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm
efd:

As it is I already pulled about three times more records than I could possibly need.
  10:32pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

Why didn't Dorothy Moore have more hits? Wow, she was good!
  10:35pm
Danne D:

woo Barkevious :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
efd:

Hey Michael! I have to say that "Misty Blue" never really did it for me, but I love "Let The Music Play."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm

Triple Barkevious shout-out!

  10:43pm
Holly in NC:

Hi efd, Danne and everyone! Yay fmu!

However, Yankee haters can just stop, I mean really, it's a sign of innate Yankee superiority that y'all are still talking about them ;-)
  10:43pm
Bigass Palmetto Bug:

I'll be back by next July 4th :)
  10:43pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

EFD--you disappoint--Misty Blue is terrific and her vocals are wonderful--she recently appeared on Treme and it reminded how great I thought she was then
  10:44pm
Bigass Palmetto Bug:

A fight!!!!! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
efd:

I've got no quarrel with her vocal skills... I'm just missing the part of the brain that appreciates slow ballad-y songs.
  10:45pm
Holly in NC:

Bigass! Small yet vaguely disgusting slug emerging from drain cannot hold a candle to you - miss you tons!
  10:47pm
Bigass Palmetto Bug:

Yeppers. There's slugs, and then there's BUGS
  10:49pm

Nads Fans:

Go Nads!
  10:56pm
Holly in NC:

I just ascertained that I do not own Groove Line on vinyl, cassette, cd or mp3. Really thought I did. Rectifying tomorrow

@Barkevious - true that. BTW, earlier this evening I brought 1 bag of candy for the hostess of our neighborhood block party to add the communal childrens' pot, but at same party I personally chose to give out 5 different kinds of yummy dog treats for the neighborhood dogs, and we all (kids, dogs, other theoretical adults) had the best party ever!
  10:58pm
Holly in NC:

that's cheesy, efd ;-)
  10:58pm
steve:

rough times like these truly call for some disco
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
efd:

steve, that was exactly my reasoning!
  10:59pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

Sylvester. Unimpeachable.
  11:00pm
R. M. Nixon, 1974:

Unimpeachable? How do I get in on that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
efd:

Wow, speaking of unimpeachable I just realized that when I come in to do my show next week the election will be over.
  11:01pm
Ford:

Don't worry RMN, I've got your back
  11:02pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

Vote for yourself. Everybody wins.
  11:03pm
W. J. Clinton, 1998:

Hey wait, guys!!!!!!!!!!!
  11:04pm
Danne D:

this disco got a little proggy for a second there :)
  11:04pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

The Daily Show has a new episode. They had "heck of a job" brownies in a skit.
  11:06pm
steve:

my one regret in life is not being alive in the late 70s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm
efd:

At least you have the Evan "Funk" Davies show! :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
efd:

Also, as regrets go that one's pretty much out of your control.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
efd:

Hi Ken! How's everything in Hyde Park? I'll have to catch up on that Daily Show later.
  11:11pm
Holly in NC:

I took a 97 yr old woman to vote today & to help her I had to fill in a circle that I didn't like to circle. That said, I ALSO filed a complaint w the county board of elections because friggin' democrats outside our early voting area were EXTREMELY aggressive and doing WILDLY illegal things, it was horrible and shameful. I've never seen anything like it. Yes I said democrats, that was not a typo. And there's a good chance Ms. L would've voted differently if she hadn't been so harassed by those assholes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
efd:

Wow, Holly - good for you for helping that woman to vote, and I hope those demonstrators outside the voting area ease up.
  11:15pm
steve:

haha yeah... you know, being alive now may be better for a disco and dance enthusiast... i can actually download and hear more than even the most connected djs could in the 70s.
  11:15pm
G:

@Holly: Controlling people (of any political or nonpolitical persuasion) never seem to get that the rest of us have options.
  11:16pm
Droll:

Holly, Don't worry, I spent the day rigging electronic voting machines. The American People™ are going to love having Droll as President. My campaign was largely overwhelmed by the less reputable (but better funded) parties, so you probably missed my campaign slogan of "Bring Back Reality", and yes, I use the Snakefinger song of that name as my campaign theme song. I might make it the national anthem.
  11:16pm
steve:

ugh, thats truly disappointing Holly
  11:20pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

We're in pretty good shape here. The winds & rain were surprisingly mild. Sending our love. Happy Halloween.
  11:21pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

I will gladly vote for any candidate brining the Ralph Records catalog to prime time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
efd:

That's good, Ken, happy to hear it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm
efd:

Folks, with all the post-Sandy devastation I just cannot in good conscience ask for pledges to WFMU's Silent Fundraiser tonight. BUT, in case they're out there reading the comments, I do want to thank some folks who have made kind and generous pledges today:
Brian in Wexford, PA
Craig in Toronto
Paul in Staten Island
Bryan in Manchester NH
Abraham in Chicago IL
Craig in NY, NY
And don't worry, I'll be back to begging mode next week -- due to the storm and the related cancellation of the Record Fair WFMU is now even MORE in the hole so I will be silently asking for your pledges again soon.
  11:22pm
Danne D:

I hate those politcal types
  11:24pm
Danne D:

Anyway folks, I have to head on home, to what I understand, is a place that has power. For which I am grateful. Have a good night everyone and stay safe and thanks for recorded greatness and comment board companionship, EFD :)
  11:24pm
amEdeo:

Danne Duckcaller! Good to see you alive and well.
  11:25pm
Holly in NC:

@steve - yes, it really was sickening. Ms. L (born in 1915, has never missed a vote) voted straight party D *except* for pres and she had been undecided re pres before getting to the polling area.
Full disclosure - I also voted today & wrote in for Jill Stein. Too tired to debate, but want y'all to know :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm
efd:

Good night Danne, hope those reports of power are correct! Get home safe.
  11:26pm
Danne D:

Thanks amEdeo :) I'm very fortunate - glad to see you too :)
Take care all! I already voted - assuming my vote isn't water logged.

Anyhow, really going this time g'night :)
  11:28pm
steve:

i doubled my pledge today... evan as usual i forgot to pledge to your, or any, show. i forget that "pledge to" link is there every single time without fail.
  11:31pm
Holly in NC:

@Droll - if you need a VP let me send you my CV...
  11:31pm
G:

@steve: EFD would know far better than I, but would a quick email to swag wrangler Joe McGasko fix a pledge needing adjustment?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm
efd:

Thanks Steve! The money all goes to the station, so any donation is appreciated whether my show is "credited" or not. And late thanks to Neil in Ogdensburg NJ!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
efd:

G, thanks for the suggestion; for various reasons there are issues with allocating a pledge to a show (or shows) after the fact, so it's fine to just leave it as is.
  11:36pm
steve:

ah ok. maybe i'll finally do it right at the next marathon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
efd:

I'll be watching!
  11:39pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

The next marathon starts Sunday morning in Staten Island ... no, wait.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
efd:

ha! Yeah, we've got to get in on that somehow...
  11:42pm
Holly in NC:

Woa. I am pulling down my attic stairs because my er, very old kickass roller skates are up there somewhere, & this song is making my feet cry for them like a toddler cries for mama
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm
efd:

Just remember, Holly, the skates go on AFTER you come back down from the attic.
  11:46pm
Holly in NC:

OK, attic too full & dark & spiderish, so now I'm just Karaoke roller skating
  11:47pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

Ah, Arthur Baker!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm
efd:

Yes, a classic! More in the "dance" than "disco" category, but I'm not going to worry about that.
  11:51pm
steve:

does anyone else listen to Nick Damon's Future Music from the Past? its basically a 20+ hour radio series of disco and dance goodness 75-85 similar to efd's disco indepen-dance. i listen to it constantly when not tuned to fmu.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm
efd:

I'm not familiar with that but I'll check it out! Sounds like it would be right up my alley.
  11:53pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

Indeed Shannon's Let the Music Play is a classic and somehow, for me, inexorably tied to the Roxy in New York (I think every time I was there they played this song, and that includes the rock concerts they had at the Roxy)
  11:53pm
Holly in NC:

I am dancing, and I don't generally dance unless I'm blackout level drunk. Very unfortunately and not by choice, I am totally sober. Power of efd!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm
efd:

The music is intoxicating!
  11:56pm
steve:

efd... i think you'd love it. he does excellent narrations on the history of each record and does a great mix of hits and deep obscurities and all in between. only music radio i listen to regularly besides fmu.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm
efd:

cool, thanks for the tip!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00am
efd:

Thanks for listening in tonight, folks! I'm looking forward to returning to the Magic Factory next week and bringing you nothing but singles from the '70s, which I'd been planning to do tonight. Maybe with a little less disco than I was thinking originally, though. :)

I think WFMU is going into Flaming Robot Of Love shuffle mode for the overnight, and we're hoping to resume some live broadcasts from the station tomorrow. Check the wfmu.org homepage for the latest!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00am
efd:

whoops, and I guess that's that!
  12:01am
Holly in NC:

Heckfire & darnation!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02am
efd:

Well I'm sure something will happen soon. I'm going to close out the playlist and go to bed - thanks again everyone!
