A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

We were about to have our chickens slaughtered because they stopped laying about 6 months ago. They must have heard us talking about it because last weekend we heard the ruckus than can only mean one thing - a freshly laid egg. Two of the girls kicked in gear in the 11th hour and started laying again.

You mentioned Clockwork Orange. I just saw Clockwork Orange for the first time and I thought it was lame and WAAAAAY overrated but I'm not a Kubrick fan. Dude had a heart of solid black ice. There is nobody to like in any of his films except for the most psychotic, murderous characters -- Alex in C.O., HAL in 2001.

@Ike. Kubrick is no Mr Chuckles but CO is of its time. Your opinion might be different if you saw it at the cinerma in '69. Ever read Burgess' book?
Avatar 11:16am
v k:

a more contemporary cover of 'holocaust' is echoing in my head but can't place the artist - help?
Avatar 11:18am
Ike:

@Brian, no, and a friend likes the movie because he links it to the book, but I can only judge based on what I saw on the screen. The victims all being marginalized or portrayed as upper-class jerks was awful -- my friend says that's because it's all Alex's POV but I don't buy it. There are plenty of scenes without Alex present. If the book is an unreliable narrator kind of thing, well, that's ONLY the book. Kubrick can't get away with that excuse based on how he filmed it.
Avatar 11:18am
glenn:

who doesn't love the possum?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am
Brian in UK:

@Ike Not sure about it being all Alex's POV. Burgess' attempt at a future vision then put through Kubricks sensibilities!! Like them or not. A stylist?

Kubrick understood the limitations of film. It is neither a strong vehicle for narrative (hence the remarkably lush and uneventful Barry Lyndon) or character (hence the salience of HAL among all roles in his films).

Yarblockos:

I got a million of 'em. Seriously, though, I have a very hard time suffering--I mean, watching--movies. Kubrick's are at least entertaining, because they don't try to do more than the medium can support, in my view. Another limitation: it is impossible to act on film. This is why Ryan O'Neal was such a perfect lump of nothing in Barry Lyndon. But, hey, I think Blazing Saddles is cinematography at its finest.

Brian: Yep, XY here. Approaching supernumerary, too, so I'll confess to having read Time magazine's review of the film when it was first released. MB was, of course, an attraction, but I'm also a dork. Thus, I was as interested in the much-hyped natural lighting during the scenes of her deshabile as in her shapeliness.

Olga:

Trouble, I just discovered that you played "Here Comes the Sun" this morning about ten minutes before I had the same idea. I had an urge to here it for obvious reason and first thought I wanted the Beatles version, but then went for Nina Simone. So excited I'm finally thinking like my favorite DJ!
