between classical music and the great american songbook, not sure where else i'd have picked up so many bits of sonic history aside from pre- and postwar cartoons
I've been watching films from the '30s and '40s for as long as I've been watching cartoons. I give Mack Sennett as much credit as anyone for my awareness of pre-war culture.
Iceland was part the Kingdom of Norway until the Kalmar Union of Sweeden, Norway and Denmark in 1415. In 1523 Sweeden left the Union which became the crown of Norway-Denmark until the Napoleanic Wars, which Norway gained it's independence from Denmark, hence Iceland was ruled by until it's formal independence in 1918 w/ the exception of the US-British occupation of WWII.
I find it fascinating that when Norway became independent, what they decided they wanted was a monarchy...so they went to Sweden to see if they had a spare prince.
GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO PROGRAMMING ALERT...
Beginning this Wednesday at 2pm, a new (old) show is joining the Drummer Stream: Ken's Last Ever Radio Extravaganza, which has been on the radio for 19 years in one form or another—at many different locations, including WFMU, but now at WTJU at the University of Virginia—will be simulcasting its broadcast on GTDR. The show, an amazing live-produced experimental sound collage, with listener call-in participation, will air 2-4pm, immediately after Amanda's Nazario Scenario.
The host is WFMU's own maestro of the webwaves: KENZO!
