Oum Kalthoum is widely acknowledged to have been the greatest Arabic singer of all time and one of most popular singers in the world, period. Tonight we'll enjoy three solid hours of classic and rare tracks by her precursors and direct competition, some major collaborators, a few notable copycats, and of course the Voice of Egypt herself.

The title of this song translates to "What Nerve You Have!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm

A fitting song for the first native Egyptian Muslim woman to sing in front of men (according to legend, anyway)

Howdy, Carl!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm
Cubicle Carl:

I read a great accounting of an Egyptian Jewish family that emigrated to Israel, and when they soon found themselves in a bomb shelter, all the elders huddled around a radio listening to Oum Kalthoum, longing for their youth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm
Gary:

Carl, I need that book! Do you recall the title? It sounds like something I was eyeing in the bookstore last week
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm
Cubicle Carl:

I wish I remembered it. I'll peruse my collection and see if something rings a bell and I'll email you. There is another book, a memoir, with a similar theme, that features Oum Kalthoum prominently - "The Man In The White Sharkskin Suit" by Lucette Lagnado.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm

ARGH! This is NOT Enta Omri. I accidentally played Fakkarouni instead. Same period, also M. Abdel Wahab, but pissed off b/c I'm not sure there's time to hear both!
