V, not really. I used to play the Ichiban stream a lot, but now, if I'm not listening live, I'm pulling up archived shows I missed. There's just no time, Man!

Yeah, seems like there's never a dull moment. I check out Crayons to Perfume once in a while, but man, it's hard to stay caught up with everything. The abundance of great programming is truly a blessing, but it can also be overwhelming!

So tell me, local listeners - since I can only listen online from where I am, I hear the Internet streams in the morning from 6:00 to 9:00. What's actually playing in the morning over there?
  12:45am
V Priceless:

Yeah. I guess you just have to pick your poison, and hope there's no conflict. Tonys show used to conflict with three chord monte on Tuesdays at noon, but now it works great with Joe on Mondays!

@claw! oh boy, hot topic. I know the answer.

wfmu is part jewish radio station! 6-9 am, m-f, there is a jewish mostly talk radio show. for real.

jah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47am
coelacanth:

actually what you're missing is jm in the am. jewish moments in the morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49am
coelacanth:

that show makes lots of money for fmu during the fundraiser.
Avatar 12:50am
Claw!:

Huh. Yeah, I've caught the very ass-end of that before when I tune into Surface Noise. Wasn't sure if that was just a Thursday thing or not... Interesting. I wonder how that came about?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50am
coelacanth:

fmu for years had a christian show on saturday mornings too.
  12:51am
V Priceless:

Yeah. The FMU free form signal only exists on the stream for those hours I think. But you should check out the drummer stream (only streaming) for some great live programming too!
  12:52am
V Priceless:

Plus the stream is censor-free
  12:52am
hot bar:

I actually don't remember the details. I assume it was around the time when they went independent from the college?
Avatar 12:53am
Claw!:

So what do they play Sat and Sun mornings?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55am
coelacanth:

jm in the am was on when i started listening to fmu regularly,if i remember right. that was the early 80s.
they were not programed or funded by the college since maybe 1968? -but they were still on the campus property until upsala went bankrupt -in the 90s??
  12:55am
V Priceless:

The GTDS stream does not have continuous live programming. When it doesn't , it just streams music.
Avatar 12:57am
Ike:

Sat. & Sun. are same as on wfmu.org. Only M-F 6-9 a.m. are split. JM started around 1980-ish when nobody at Upsala College wanted to do a show 6-9 a.m. For a while JM raised more than 1/3 of each marathon total, but if I understand correctly, not quite such a big portion recently as the audience has gotten more elderly.
Avatar 12:57am
Claw!:

Whoa. I just learned something new about early-morning FMU! Thanks, Guys!

And V, I will be sure to check out the Give The Drummer stream in the future. Is there a schedule for it posted somewhere?

So does anyone here know how the music on the streams (both GTDS and Ichiban) gets decided? Are the playlists all compiled in advance by anyone in particular?

  1:06am
P-90:

Very high on the Prog-Meter this morning.
El Exigente approves!
  1:07am
V Priceless:

I can only speak of the GTDS stream. The streaming portion is a free form mix of all sorts, the shows are live FMU DJs doing their own shows in real time! Like an alternate universe with no FCC restrictions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09am
coelacanth:

i'm 100% guessing, but i think the gtds stream (in-between "live" shows) is an ongoing rebroadcast of shows originally aired live.(probably edited by Doug Shulkind)
  1:09am
V Priceless:

Doug Schulkind is the main guy behind the GTDS stream.
  1:10am
Andrea:

Helloooo from London. Great show!

Avatar 1:12am

Yeah, I'm referring to the "free-form mix of all sorts." Do all the FMU DJs just add songs to an enormous playlist and hit "shuffle?" I mean, the songs have to come from somewhere. Who puts em together? I must know!
  1:12am
V Priceless:

Magma is playing NYC in May!
Avatar 1:12am
Ike:

@coel, nope, between "live" shows, GTDS is Doug Schulkind's curated "jukebox," i.e. his huge hard drive full of thousands of things from his collection.

Aha! So I was close! It's pretty much an enormous playlist on 'shuffle.'
Well, that must be an impressive collection he's got on that hard drive. Is Ichiban the same? Is that all Doug's stuff also?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15am

okay,Ike. that makes even more sense, since editing the talk out of every program would be pretty tedious.

On GTDS, Charlie and Tony C. do excellent shows. Like Doug, they were both once in-person DJs over the regular airwaves before they moved away. Bodega Pop is also great. But I rarely get to hear Tony C. live anymore b/c I also really dig Liz's show. And Doug also has tough competition from Dangerous for the Brain.

i don't think loss leaders fell into this, but it's the same era (and they might have). the book 'stiffed' is a really fascinating account of cut-out bins and how the record industry conspired with the mafia to get out of paying artists royalties in the '70s. and it's not a crackpot book. www.publishersweekly.com...
