Ok, yes. Here's to the unspeakable horrors to come! And also the moments of sheer loveliness.
Avatar 3:10pm
Jason Elbogen:

That's the kind of positive attitude they pay us for here on the Drummer Stream, Jeff! Good work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm

Good afternoon Jason, Jeff, and listeners
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm
Jeff Golick:

Just happy to do my part.
Hi there, Fred, Jason, onlookers.

Sparrow Steeple sounds like Bryan Ferry at a late party.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm
fred:

Were Le Lotus based in France by any chance? Hare Khrisna owned a castle near where my mother's family is from. We went there a few times when I was a kid, probably including 1978
Avatar 3:18pm
Jason Elbogen:

I think Le Lotus were Canadian, Fred.
Avatar 3:23pm
annie:

hey jason!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm
fred:

You can be on tour and play without an audience. I obviously never saw that, but it happened a few times to some friends, where the only people there were the other bands on the bill and the venue's staff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm
fred:

@Jason: I saw half of Colectivo Etéreo last week when Dadalu played in Paris. I "told" them you had played them -- through Oso because I don't speak Spanish -- and they looked quite pleased
Avatar 3:41pm
Jason Elbogen:

Cool, how was the show?

melinda:

Hi Jason and folks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm
doctorjazz:

Hi, just checking in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm
fred:

I enjoyed it a lot, but I'm seriously biased: I knew most of the people who played that night, I hadn't seen Oso in almost two years, and many people hadn't seen me since I got out of the hospital. Hard to be objective about the music
Avatar 3:48pm
Jason Elbogen:

Thanks for checking in on the day when all North Americans (except Canadian Hare Krishnas) swell with pride over the peaceful transition of power.

I think you are subconsciously trying to become Canadian.

You came very close: the 'h' is not just silent, it's like it's not there at all. A friend says half the letters in his name are useless except to confuse people when he travels (his name is Thibault)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm
Webhamster Henry:

I was thinking of changing my handle, but it's been Webhamster for 25 years or more at this point. Branding is everything! I understand "Yahoo!" is up for grabs, but I'm not interested.
  4:01pm
melinda:

It's a good handle, Henry. So what was the impetus for creating it 25 yrs ago?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm
Dave in Vermont:

excellent
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm
fred:

Adding insult to injury, the didgeridoo has been co-opted by annoying westerners. Worst offender I saw: at a Q&A with a mouth harp player who had just stressed the spiritual side of using his body as a resonator, a dreadlocked guy asked him to play in a vase while he accompanied him on his didgeridoo. I was with a Russian-speaking friend who told me the translator asked a totally different question
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm
Jeff Golick:

Thank god for judicious translators. Saving us from ourselves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm
fred:

@Jeff: The flip side of that coin was the translator for Blackfire when the band went into pointed criticism of what Areva (a French uranium company) was doing to their tribe's land. Her translation too was innocuous platitudes, not even mentioning the company
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm
Jeff Golick:

@fred: Ah, yeah. Always another side, I guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm
Webhamster Henry:

@melinda I was one of a group of people who put WFMU on the internet - I wrote a bunch of features and formatted playlists by hand for a few years. Sometimes, it was like being a hamster running in the little hamster wheel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm
Jeff Golick:

Jews are "white." I suspect the non-whites of all persuasions will go first. (If that's how this plays out...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm
Jeff Golick:

Adding: I feel sort of icky having this conversation via comment board. Probably not the best way to do this. And, for the record, I am of the Jewish faith. Back to the music, please!
Avatar 4:26pm
Ike:

I figure Muslims first, *then* Mexicans, then the press, then intellectuals, *then* at some point later, some Jews (the "bad" ones, i.e. non-Orthodox and/or not related to Kushner).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm
fred:

@Jeff: It might be some kind of urban legend, but I read that Irish people were not considered white for a while. Which would prove that white, like inconceivable, doesn't mean what I think it means
Avatar 4:27pm
Ike:

Nor Italians, I think @Fred. There's a book or books about this history somewhere....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm
Jeff Golick:

Well, "whiteness" is a fungible concept, to be deployed and utilized by those who control the levers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm
Jeff Golick:

One might also say the same of "American." Bottom line? Someone's gotta be at the bottom of the pile, getting a boot pressed on his neck, so that those just above feel a little better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm
Jeff Golick:

-- sorry; been kind of an odd, rough day -- no joke, I truly picked a bad time to wean myself off of antidepressants.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm
Jeff Golick:

But if the Ghetto Youth Singers of 1970 can get there, so can I.
  4:32pm
melinda:

Yeah, when people refer to race as a social construct this is what they're referring to.
Avatar 4:34pm
Ike:

Not a good time to go off antidepressants for sure. If I did that now I'd start obsessing over the likelihood of imminent nuclear war again. More than I do now, I mean. Sure, the side effects are nasty, but maybe ginkgo can help w/that....

These Lomax-collected tracks from Louisiana are simply amazing.

Lost the audio on this track for while.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm
Jeff Golick:

@fred: were there only more of you!

melinda:

I was reading an article about Neanderthals yesterday. The latest theory is that we coexisted alongside them, sort of like the hobbits and elves of Tolkien-land.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm
Doug Schulkind:

Some smart people speculate that the word "zydeco" actually comes from the pronunciation of the French phrase "les haricots."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm
Alex In Illinois:

@melinda: I am pretty sure that I have read theories that we not only coexisted, but humans interbred with them and some humans have Neanderthal DNA and others don't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm
fred:

You think mp3s don't skip? Just wait, WFMU has people working on it
Avatar 4:43pm
Jason Elbogen:

Ok, this disc skipped on the bottom CD player (CD2), but it's working on the top one...
  4:44pm
melinda:

Alex, yes! My sister is into genealogy, encouraged my dad to do one of those DNA tests and I believe his mother's line had some Neanderthal heritage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm

Fascinating stuff, but I gotta run to catch a train. Thanks, Jason, all!

Alex In Illinois:

@melinda: I think I read that most Europeans have Neanderthal DNA, especially Southern Europe. And Neanderthals have been given a bad rap. It is now known that they painted pictures and wore decorative clothing, sometimes using feathers, and the sophistication of their tools was previously under-rated.
Avatar 5:10pm
northguineahills:

Pretty much all homo-sapiens not from sub-Saharan Africa have some Neanderthal DNA.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Neanderthal DNA has contributed to some of our disease immunity (hearty Northerners) - for upsides, that is...I think it's also contributed to propensity for diabetes & some other things...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@Alex: Interesting - as last I heard they used the same blunt instruments to hunt the same animals for like 300,000 years - whereas into the Cro-Mag era here we've gone from nice civilized forest-dwellers to the neutron bomb in practically no time @ all...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm

Getatchew was such a loss, I was surprised I didn't hear much of him in the year-end tributes. Then again, many of us expected it even sooner after his wife died
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Wow Tarab. Set is kewl as hell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm
Doug Schulkind:

@fred
I have several high mounds of records here that are threateningly wobbly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm
fred:

@Jason: I think Getatchew played at WFMU's 50th anniversary show with The Ex, maybe that counts as a connection
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

This set also seriously not terrible. Whole different way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm

It's not that I don't care--but every first, second, and third-rate movie/television/music person who passes away is inevitably announced on the list-serve. It's sort of like a giant email-subject-heading-cemetery.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:50pm
