A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Is it time yet to reevaluate Malcolm McLaren? Despite being, by all accounts, a terrible person, his impact on both punk and dance is pretty incalculable.

John, I always took that line to mean that he was extremely appreciative of what she "had" before "giving it up" for a life with... him. An humble statement, in my opinion- she probably DID have a very, very good life with him. Too serious for the morning?

bonjour sugarwolf!
a lineman checks the rail lines to make sure they are passable for trains, i imagine. example: "if it snows that stretch down south won't stand the strain."
if we evaluated every artists or musician by their asshole quotient there would be very few that make the cut. malcolm was a huge innovator, and a super jerk. those two are not mutually exclusive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am

@Passaic hope you have a swell time!

What did McLaren do to deserve the asshole/jerk rep? I've always heard he is one but don't know the details.
  9:23am

  9:23am

Phone lines - what a quaint notion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am

I assumed lineman was a rail thing, too. Maybe because there's a stronger tradition of train songs than phone repair ballads, but I'm terrible w/lyrics so I'm sure I missed the obvious cues.

Telephone lines. Final answer.

the phone line metaphor definitely works better than a metaphor about 600 volts a.c.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am
The Oscar:

@melinda I think a lot of it has to do with the way he handled the Sex Pistols, taking the lion's share of the credit (he claimed "Johnny Rotten" and "Sid Vicious" were characters he created), trying to keep milking it after the band split, exploiting Sid's death, etc. Also, his "concept" behind Bow Wow Wow was decidedly skeezy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am
Adrian in London:

Good morning/afternoon all…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am
The Oscar:

That said, I DO think he deserves a lot of credit for getting the Pistols started and dominating the media. I feel like his and Lydon's accounts are sort of a Rashomon-type thing, and we may never actually know who was responsible for what.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am
