A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Peace all. I just learned college radio which is usually transmitted at a lower power can go a bit further than higher frequency stations on the same FM dial. This may be why college radio is usually found at the left side of the dial so they have a fighting chance of getting their signal to go as far as possible on a limited Watt budget. Does this make sense?.

Oh one thing we missed was Morricone Youth. I didn't realize this: [wikipedia:] Guitarist/founder Devon E. Levins hosted a weekly Internet radio show from 2007 to 2014 under the same name on East Village Radio playing primarily obscure film and television soundtracks and library music and interviewing soundtrack composers [...] The radio show has since moved to WFMU under the new name Morricone Island.

Sorry to hear you had eclipse weather trouble, Trouble. I went with a friend + her friend to visit another of our friends who's living with his sister in Columbia, SC. Clear start to the day yielded to 2 layers of clouds (even a sprinkle) just as the eclipse started. However, just before totality a break in the clouds afforded a great view of the sun (though not of Mercury), then shortly after totality clouds again. (I didn't see shadow bands on the ground as I did in 1970 in Va. Beach, though.) My viewing filter: an old X-ray. Any exposed B&W negative works well and doesn't tint the view.

Whoever recommended "Losing It" by Emma Rathbone, thank you! It's hilarious and just the thing for Trump-itis.
  10:48am
Listener Robert:

Wild Neil @ 9:45, no, the freq allocation of the FM broadcast band was not for that reason, which isn't even generally true. It IS true that under conditions of sporadic E skip, lower frequencies may propagate to great distances while higher ones don't, but sporadic E skip is so spotty, it's not a useful way of extending one's coverage area.

I used to participate in the hobby of listening (and on TV, watching) for unusually distant reception (DX), but these days the only time I notice sporadic E skip or other DX propagation is when it interferes with WMFU on 90.1.

@LR & @WN, yeah I thought that was only true for AM, not FM. (BTW, LR, are you in the Bronx? How are the pirates there lately? Same as usual?)
  11:07am
Listener Robert:

I moved from the Bronx to here in Sussex Co. NJ (postally Andover, legally Green) almost a year ago.

What you refer to is true of AM because of the ability of signal at those wavelengths to half-slit diffract around the Earth's surface, or to put it another way, use the conductive land & water as half a wave guide.

Love the show. Ship happens (i.e. sinks). I don't look for trouble. Trouble always seems to just find me.
  11:13am
Listener Robert:

It's misleading to state these as properties of AM & FM, i.e. modulation types, rather than of the wavelengths or frequencies that use them: medium wave & VHF, respectively. AFAIK the British still refer to their FM broadcast band as "VHF" rather than "FM", and the AM BCB as "medium wave".
