A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Not just marketers, Sugarwolf. My parents use zip-lock bags instead of tupperware or other reusable containers b/c they're "cheap". And they only recycle what is legally mandated. When I was visiting both of my brothers (in their separate abodes), I noticed neither recycled, even though they were legally mandated by their respective cities to do so. Since then, I got one of them to do so, and the other does so when convenient. Material waste doesn't even register to many people, and it drives me insane.

i see talk of recycling and waste here, which also irks me (the latter, the former does NOT). i volunteer with the Lower East Side Ecology Center in nyc, and used to be paid to stand on a nyc street corner for 3+ hours for 3days/week. people would bring food scraps and dump them into a bin. in 2016, 50,000 pounds of food waste was collected at "my office" . i loved this job. i'd tawk recycling with them (& pet dogs and coo at children and gossip and...). and now, a friend has a sensor project re composting. he's tryna raise money (wait, so is wfmu) and i'm helping. so if you can too, neat. pardon this pandering. thank you. www.ioby.org...

true. melting down aluminum, shredding plastic and crushing glass (to be used in roads, which there should be a moratorium on new ones) is probably a small % as efficient as responsible packaging and consuming would be.

Trouble: I think that's a fact! // Recyling is just one thing to do. I usually take reusable cloth bags to buy food; still, I'm inundated with plastic bags which I can recycle at my supermarket.

herb, I met a guy recently who's in business recycling food waste in Las Vegas. Too involved to go into here and I'm not good with remembering details but all those buffets create literally millions of pounds of food waste.

rw, my niece and nephew visited a single stream recycling facility (a class trip) and they say it really does get done. separated and presumably recycled. the rule where my sister lives is "if you're not sure, put it in the recycling bin". where i lived in nj years ago the rule was "if you're not sure, throw it out".

There's a plastic bag ordinance here in Chicago and stores charge 7 cents per bag. The city had counted on raking in a ton of cash from it and the actual intake has been waaaay less than the projections because people have been diligent about bringing their own bags or not using them at all. Makes me v. happy. Stick it to the man by being environmentally conscious!

There should be far more recycling of food waste. I use a curbside composting service and it's great, they allow meat & dairy scraps too since they are a large facility and candle safely compost them. And they leave bags of compost if you want.

@Magdo (i masculanized yr name), @rw i'm glad yr into food waste as well ("take my food waste, plz!"). here's 2 websites; the latter belongs to Sashti, the man who is raising money for the compost project. oh, i think france passed a law about stores NOT throwing out dated food. and you can do a DuckDuckGo search for "Trader Joe's ex-president to open store selling expired food". (i learned of Duck search engine via the cool new show on wfmu, Techtonic) --
