A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

still b/p: have you seen the video series "Fun City- Dirty Old New York"? clips of New York in films from the 70s & 80s, organized by theme. really lovely. the city really was a major character in films of that time. in just a minute I'll find the details. it's really enjoyable.

You watch The Rockford Files for James Garner's portrayal of Jim Rockford's world-weary yet somehow still good humored really low expectations of how the world will treat him and others. And yes, that loose and seedy LA vibe.

The long goodbye is the the better version of Paul Thomas Anderson’s inherent vice. It’s practically the same movie. Sterling Hayden in one of his best roles.

My favorite dingy 70s L.A. movie is "California Split", also by Altman and also stars Gould with George Segal. In the final scenes, Segal staring into the middle distance seized with sudden knowledge as to the meaningless of effort/exertion/passion/mania/etc.--oh man, that always kills me.

@Warwick Joe: I used to have the DVD but handed it off to a cousin years ago. Haven't seen it in a minute, but it's still got a hold of me. Also, big ups to Orange County, now and forever.

If people liked Pynchon's "Inherent Vice", I'd also recommend "Crybaby of the Western World" by John Leonard, my favorite old NYBR critic. It's pretty much a direct blood relation of "Inherent Vice" (we're talking only a few alleles off) but was actually written and published in 67-69.
