A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

the observation I have about this is that in 1977, Studio One was living off its old reputation. All these tracks are about 6-8 years old at this point. The "new" Jamaican music of 1977 was vastly different and reflected the rawness of the poverty and political warfare on the streets at the time.

Wild Neil, if you really want to go deep check out my friend Julea Thomerson's WFMU archives "Diesel Smoke & Dangerous Curves". She's the best!

Becky and Betsy do great country programs and McGasko did a stellar premium a few years ago of southern Gothic.

@Magda-I will be going to Dziadkowice this summer for a couple days, my son has a Polish exam via some very cool Polish organization that schools Polonia children for free until last year.....

Madge, I know what you mean. I’ve been listening to too much Sonic Youth lately. Had Daydream Nation and No star on heavy rotation. Too much VU and UFO. Hence my request for more Southern Rock.

You mean the station doesn't wheel out an actual Old Codger?

The Old Codger is Courtney Edison. Oh alright, he's Irwin.

I didn't like Southern Rock until I moved to NYC. It was omnipresent when I grew up. It was only in Brooklyn, I noticed something was missing. (yes, I played Skynyrd at the downtown avant club Tonic).

@NGH, I know what you mean -- that's the kind of thing the jocks and normies (do we say "normies?") listened to in rural Maryland. Still not into it! Don't get it. Never understood why anybody would want to hear that on FMU. I came to FMU to get away from that. And to get away from corny Dusty Show type stuff.

Eik... I am guessing what they were listening to was redneck music, not southern rock. The two are mostly not the same.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am

@eik sometimes the recontextualization helps. I don't feel that the station needs more southern rock but I like it when I hear some of it outside of the annoying commercial stations, sandwiched between non-obvious choices.

And it is worthwhile to note that all major genres of American music were birthed in the South. I am just a southerner proud of my culture.

@Anthony: As you know, there are self-described progressive rednecks and redneck hippies. Heck, when exploring for a random bar for my bday off the beaten path, I found a gay redneck bar. I had a blast. (as a geographer, I'm always exploring).

Your saying that does not negate the fact of what I said. And I think the civil war was fought to end slavery. Plantation owners may have used the northern oppression argument to appease their conscious, but I never bought it.
