Favoriting April 18, 2018: CHRIS STAMEY interview!

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Singer/songwriter/guitarist/producer/label owner/arranger/engineer/mixer/musical director/movie producer and now author Chris Stamey has been in the vanguard of independent American music for decades. His new memoir, A Spy In The House Of Loud (University Of Texas Press) largely covers his time in NYC from the mid-'70s to the early '90s. Initially conceived as an annotated songbook, the songs serve as a jumping-off point for a fascinating look at the nascent New York underground music scene, Stamey's time with the legendary dB's, and his ever-improving skills on both sides of the recording studio glass. Chris called in to the show tonight to chat about the book and fill us in on his upcoming book tour readings/performances in our area: Thursday the 19th at McNally Jackson Bookstore in Soho; Friday April 20 at Little City Books in Hoboken; and Saturday April 21 at Rough Trade NYC in Williamsburg. (Visit chrisstamey.com for info on events in North Carolina and Los Angeles)

That Chris Stamey isn't in the R&R Hall of Fame is one more reason why it's a bogus shrine.

Evan, you're killing it tonight! Love this!

Stevel:

Nice interview. Might be my next music book. I'm basically musical literate, but not much of a musician up to now. Still, I'm interested in learning more about his take on the musical evolutions of the time. Might be an interesting follow to From the Velvets To the Voidoids.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Drunken Creep:

That unintended 7' speed was good move. I know of at least two ears that appreciated hearing it at that speed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
efd:

@Stevel I think you'd like it a lot, especially if you have that foundation.
@DrunkenCreep I'm with you, I don't think I'll like it as much when I listen to it at 33.
  11:06pm
Stevel:

V to V and CS's book are fascinating, focusing on the musical development, not so much the infamy (which is always a blast to read about!)

That's not a good sentence, but it's late and I may be under an influence.
  11:10pm
Stevel:

Looks like there's some cool write ups about CS. This one looks worth a read. It's from a Durham/Chapel Hill outlet.

Stevel:

This one is a bit more straight up and down writing, but it definitely sounds like folks like to claim CS,dbs, etc.

QTY puts on a good show! As far as I know it's all letters with them. Though they're coy rock kids.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm

good to know, thanks Aharon! And thanks for the Stamey stories, Stevel!
  11:39pm
Derek:

Hi Evan cool show, @ Stevel if CS book is even half as good as as from The VELVETS TO THE VOIDOIDS it should be well well worth the effort, that book is an essential for the interested.
  Swag For Life Member 11:55pm
12539:

Thanks, Evan!

Stevel:

Probably my favorite Ramones song. Awesome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm
efd:

if the accuplaylist is to be believed this is the first time I've played this song on WFMU, which is ridiculous!
  11:58pm
Stevel:

Perfect album opener. Remember those?
