A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

It's happening all over the country. There was a big house right down the street from me that went on sale two months ago, it was built in 1910, a developer bought it, knocked it down, and now they're building 2 prefabs on that one lot.

My house was built in 1942-3. I don't often think about the original inhabitants but I do wonder what the original kitchen and bathroom looked like. Most of the houses on my street have the same floorplan, with the mirror-image plan on the other side of the street.

At least they probably obtain permits to demolish buildings in Jersey City. In Newark, the Parking Lot Lords (the odious Edison Parking and J&L Parking) will acquire a building adjacent to an existing lot and then just tear it down. No permit. No plan. Then they wait a decent interval and pave it over to enlarge the original lot. It's utterly insane.

Zoning laws often won't permit multi-residence buildings in residential 'hoods. But we have seen a lot of "in-law" apartments built over garages, and second stories added to single-story post war homes.

My old Billyburg apt was new but shoddily constructed, every corner cut (no baseboard on one side of my bedroom). Landlord was impossible to talk to get anything done, but it was at least large for the neighborhood and close to the L.

Trouble, there's an amazing article from current affairs magazine called "why you hate contemporary architecture" that I think you would love based on what you just said. (Not sure what rules are on links so I didn't include it)
regarding that awful free-market orange metaphor the article has a relevant bit where they say " The physical environment in which we live and work, however, is ubiquitous and inescapable; when it comes to architecture, it is nigh-impossible for people to simply avoid the things they hate and seek out the things they like."

Basically we deserve and should fight for beauty in architecture!

@melinda: my 1943 house's floor plan is totally different from the original (found a digital copy at the city tax appraisers site). The only thing from the original is the outside structural edifice.

Much of the same sort of discussion you're talking about went on in comments to Mayor Fulop's original social media post about this demolition cooling-off period.

Two or three people - well, one in particular - repeatedly referred to this (and indeed I assume any attempt at actual urban planning) with words like "marxist", "communist", and "totalitarian".

I keep hoping In vain the local paper will show images of some of the many apartments/condos built in the recent booming years, and have the architects AND objective ones explain the redundant visual vocabulary, the e-z kit appearance, leading to the yawn response and generic environment. Costs are a factor, sure. What else? Past building styles had sameness — brick blocks and 3-deckers. But we really can’t hope for better?
