Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am

Hello, and same to you, @listener james!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am

@fred: no "gems," exactly, but the time travel that occurs while excavating can bring occasional moments of remembered joy

Spent 5 min trying to get sound to come out of my speakers and will now listen through laptop that sounds as if it is underwater. But I'm not complaining!

I think I'm done booking tickets for next season. I'm tempted by a couple more shows, but the dates are overlapping with other shows. I already have 51, so that's a great haul anyway. Mostly dance, including 10 Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker shows

I'm not really clear on who's playing trumpet on this Thing cut.

This Thing is a thing.
Hi Jeff and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am

The downside is that Instants Chavirés is in even more financial trouble than usual, so there will only be a few shows there until the end of the year
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am
Jeff Golick:

How do, @Stanley!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am
Jeff Golick:

That is sad to hear, @fred, even though I only know the venue via a few recordings.
  10:12am
Listener Gregory:

I wondered about the trumpet too, Jeff. I went to The Thing's Bandcamp site, and it suggests that Joe McPhee was a special guest on trumpet.

I've only seen Joe McPhee play the toy trumpet
  10:24am

@Andrew Yes, they refer to it as the "pocket trumpet." Sorry! He is only listed on the page for the song, not the album.
Avatar 10:24am
northguineahills:

The last time I saw Joe McPhee play, he had a menagerie of instruments, including a lot of brass instruments that I've never seen or heard from before or since and various specific keys. He was very kind in explaining them to me after the show.

And when I saw Joe McPhee earlier this year he was wearing a "Joe McPhee" jacket. That takes some confidence, warranted in his case
  10:32am
Dean:

Speaking of the Smithsonian, I went to Down Home Records yesterday, where somebody recently unloaded a bunch of vintage "out" jazz CDs: Roscoe Mitchell, Ed Blackwell, Christy Doran, etc. Probably a couple hundred disks, and one of the clerks told me there are more to go out. Owner Chris Stracchwitz was there, pleased to see the pile I'd selected. He sold much of his Arhoolie Records to the Smithsonian (Folkways) not too long ago.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am

An LA session/club musician connected to the Clines, Bob Brookmeyer, Alan Broadbent, and a long list of folks who'd roll through town. He studied composition at UCLA, but really determined to go his own way. Ended up teaching in Sweden. Died quite young in '97, probably from heart failure due to substance abuse. Check out the three Cryptogramophone disks produced by Jeff Gauthier (another Jeff G.!).
  10:44am
Dean:

These three records feature his relatively unknown compositions. Meanwhile, I'm on the trail of his own recordings with Cline, Gauthier, et al.
