You'll certainly want to watch this one later, Jeff. Dunno if you want spoilers.

Thanks, and hello, @foofs. I just peeped the score. Yowza.

Yeah, I am enjoying this, too, @ljfw!

My compliments to the Jeff!

If this update is like my most recent, it takes a LONG time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am
Jeff Golick:

Hey, @Sem, @Doug! Yes, the stream is quite able to do the D:O. My compliments to whoever cooked that up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am

@duke: awesome.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am

@Doug, I thought you might have seen Jeff's plight and nudged the stream toward jazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am
Jeff Golick:

Sadly, 'tis. @Brian in UK. As Groucho said: "D:O Radio repeats itself, first as tragedy, then as farce."

While we're chatting...does anyone have any recommendations for how to move a computer? That is, is there any special way one can shut down a desktop tower so that a little jostling is not fatal?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am
Jeff Golick:

Of course, at the rate things are going, I might just throw it out the window. (The percentage of "progress" in this update just went DOWN.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am
Jeff Golick:

PS. I'm very sorry about this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am
Andrew Waterloo:

Bout all you can do is shut it down and protect it from shock. If you have a backup great. If not, I'm not going to mention backups.
Avatar 🥁 10:24am
duke:

I was going to suggest defenestration as the proper method for moving a computer
Avatar 🥁 10:25am

I second backups as mandatory.

Thanks (and howdy), @Andrew Waterloo. And @duke.

doctorjazz:

Hi, good luck with the move, Jeff. Backup to computer is something I'm interested in, don't have any good system in place now. D. O. Still going to happen today?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am
Jeff Golick:

I backup externally via a cloud service, Backblaze. I like it fine, but haven't had to use it to replace anything yet [[knocks wood obsessively]].

I plan on doing some D:O today, yes. Probably not three hours, tho.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am
Jeff Golick:

And: hi, and thanks, @doctorjazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am
Jeff Golick:

gospel feels good & necessary now.
  10:37am
Dean:

Whew! Your computer troubles mean I got to sleep in and not miss ANY d: O!

Can't say you need to be too careful moving a desktop, though you might want to maintain personal custody. If you leave it to movers, put it in its packaging and label it FRAGILE.

My first CD player, a Kyocera c.'87, required unseating a screw, shifting a little bit of plastic, and reseating when moving the unit. Supposedly protected the transport.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am
Jeff Golick:

Hey, @Dean! Yeah, I'm probably remembering something along those lines, from an earlier time.

Chances are good that we will get going before the Senegal v Japan kickoff.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:44am
Brian in UK:

Jeff, photograph the back where the wires go, so you have a record. Sounds dumb but.....I did that when I moved.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am
Jeff Golick:

Good tip, @Brian. I will do.

Show about to begin...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:47am
doctorjazz:

Turntables and cd transports can have spring suspensions, and need to be secured. I don't think the cd drive in most PCs are built to that kind of spec.
  10:49am
Dean:

That was the case with the '87 Kyocera, and certainly remains the case with my '83 Linn 'table. If I move it, I support the suspension.

Picked up another boatload of "out" jazz at Down Home yesterday. This morning they're hosting a parking lot sale. I have to keep at a distance...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am
Jeff Golick:

It's the greatest disease there is, @Dean.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:50am
Brian in UK:

Dean, stay in bed it is safer and cheaper.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:51am
doctorjazz:

Keeping a distance sounds like a safe move (for your wallet). There was a jazz collectors record fair in Edison New Jersey Friday and Saturday, kept away ..
  10:52am
Dean:

Among the finds, the 2CD reissue of Roscoe's NONAAH, including previously unreleased tracks. Another shopper at the store gave me some background about the album. He'd attended the shows from which Berkeley tracks were taken. The joy of Down Home!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:52am
Brian in UK:

Found a new record shop now we have moved. Got Bill Evans, Scott Le Faro and Paul Motion at the Village Vanguard and Bill Fay for a fiver each.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am
Jeff Golick:

All wonderful stuff, @Brian and @Dean. That NONAAH reissue is a monster.
  10:57am
Dean:

Waltz for Debby, @Brian in UK? Such a gorgeous record, top to bottom.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am
Jeff Golick:

@Brian, how far did you move, in mi or km?
  11:00am
Dean:

I always try to move miles, rather than km. Cuts down on time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am
Jeff Golick:

The Saft goes out to Lorraine Gordon and her family and friends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am
Sem:

OK, sounding great!
  11:08am
Dean:

Another find, a Clean Feed disk, the Julius Hemphill Sextet live in Lisbon, featuring Sam Furnace, who died a few months later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am
Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @Sem. Glad you're here for it.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:08am
Brian in UK:

Jeff just about 150 miles. Town to country. Shropshire by the Welsh Borders.
The record shop man also puts on gigs.

Dean it was an experience watching Bill Evans at Ronnie Scott's a year or two before he passed. I thought he was going to kiss the keys.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am
Jeff Golick:

@Dean: I don't have that Hemphill 6tet record. No Hemphill at that point, right?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:12am
Brian in UK:

It was interesting because I bought some CDs that he wanted out as he was concentrating on RECORDS now.
The new Kamasi Washington four album set had just arrived. £35 was a bit steep.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am
Jeff Golick:

@Brian: ah yes that's a pretty significant move. We're going about a mile (or about 20 city blocks), but even so it's going to feel foreign.
  11:13am
Dean:

I so regret never having heard Evans live (or Sun Ra, or Duane Allman, or...). Maybe these shows, @Brian?
https://www.discogs.com/Bill-Evans-Complete-Live-At-Ronnie-Scotts-1980-/release/4457895
If so, you heard him the year he died.

Right, no Hemphill. It was recorded in 2003. The sextet had become Marty Ehrlich's baby.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:16am
Brian in UK:

Dean, it was 1980 must have forgotten how close it was.

So much for keeping my distance from the parking lot sale. I just purchased that Bill Evans Trio live at Ronnie Scott's set. Fuck the internet.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:23am

Catch you on the archives... BTW, I have the Post Hemphill-Julius Hemphill Sextet cd, Five Chord Stud, if anyone's interested in it just let me know, email.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:24am

Dean you are passed the point of rescue. I do have a slight feeling of guilt here for kind of directing you. But then again....
  11:26am
Dean:

Right, and drug dealers "have a slight feeling of guilt" toward their customers.

Speaking of Marty Ehrlich!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am
Stanley:

I'll just have the last half an hour, if that's okay, Jeff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am

I'm confused (but pleased)! What time does this program end? Are we running over? I can't remember anything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm
Jeff Golick:

Typically 9-noon ET. Started late, running over. Ending soon :(
  12:19pm
Dean:

The late start means I for once hear an entire d: O, albeit an abbreviated one.
  12:20pm
Doug Schulkind:

Good luck (Go’lick) with the move.
  12:21pm
rw:

Oh, man. Good luck with the move. If you wonder for a second whether to keep something or throw it out I say throw it out!
Thanks for the show this morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm
Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @Doug, @rw, @Dean, and all! Take care!
  12:44pm

I shamefully listened on the archive but now find that that was exactly the way to listen. So, I applaud my insight. Great show even if shortened.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm
