did some goggling of La justice, which is a French expression that basically means to 'raise a hare' or sound an alarm, it's an old expression from what I understand www.expressio.fr...

Jim McHugh:

I love Ballads of Gnarl -- sad raggedy songs by rough characters -- it's maybe my fave sub-sub-subgenre extant, and this Wreckless Eric/Hitsville House Band just scaled some serious heights for me.

later folks. Gotta get some z's busy day tomorrow.
Thanks JJ. Great evening. Will catch the rest at work tomorrow.

i'm only just plunging into the l. wray & w. eric catalogs (relatively speaking) & there seems to be a great reserve of heartbreak in there.
Avatar 1:39am
Jim McHugh:

Link Wray is from Dunn, NC -- a place whose phonetic pronunciation pretty much sums it up. Enough heartbreak at the corner store there for a couple novels and a decent LP, at least.
Avatar 1:43am
Jim McHugh:

Not to mention that he grew up a rebellious native in deep poverty in the most rural & reactionary part of NC, was shipped to the Korean war, lost part of a lung(and still sings like a stressed knowing angel!) and toughed it out as a dance-hall hoofer all before the age of 22 or so. Tough and beautiful as they come....
Avatar 1:45am

Hey JJ his version of Girl From The North Country from the early 60's will summon your tears but quick
Avatar 1:46am
Diezel Tea:

Good morning from the South Caucasus, where now Azerbaijan has positioned 4 times the number of troops on the Nagorno-Karabagh border than they had when they began the April 2016 invasion attempt. At least we still have WFMU.

Robin:

so this is the first time I’ve tuned into the frow show. it’s now gonna be in my regular rotation. bitchin’ show. thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49am
jj.:

@jim - wow, will check. perhaps predictably, i know his stuff with j. garcia on pedal steel, which is great, too.
Avatar 1:49am
Diezel Tea:

For fans of the interesting, I highly recommend checking out Christian Zehnder - he performed here a month or two ago. A "new Alpine" musician. I'll see if I can find a link, but his works are lyricless vocal exercises combining yodeling with experiments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49am
jj.:

@diezel - yikes, i hope you are safe!
Avatar 1:50am
Jim McHugh:

@JJ His brother Vernon Wray -- a member of his band since teen years - put our a killer alb called WASTED, with brother Link on guitar of course.
Avatar 1:51am
Jim McHugh:

And look into all his early 70's albs: Mordecai Jones & Beans and Fatback are both undersung killers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51am

oh yeah, i know vernon's album, great stuff.
Avatar 1:52am
Jim McHugh:

@diezel stay strong man
Avatar 1:53am
Diezel Tea:

Ah here's something from YouTube: www.youtube.com... His live performances tether between the comical and the deeply sorrowful, and all in between.
Avatar 1:54am
Diezel Tea:

Anyway yeah thanks guys. The border is far from the capital where we live but with the recent geopolitical events things are way more tense than usual around here.
Avatar 2:10am
Jim McHugh:

@diezel With this freaked-out and rightfully disjointed Star Spangled Banner, I join you across the nations and the seas in an anti-war, anti-military, anti-imperialist, anti-capitalist fist salute.
Avatar 2:13am
Diezel Tea:

Haha, delightful, salute and salutations all over the place
Avatar 2:17am
Jim McHugh:

@jj on topic twice over now: played guitar in Colin L Orchestra at a July 4th gig in Far Rockaway, and our set consisted of Eric's "Whole Wide World" five time is a row with sections of improv. Got called for an encore, so we made it a 6-pack. It's perfect music!

Love your show as always, but the last few minutes of guitar was brilliant. Thank you!
Avatar 2:30am

Hahaha, Jesse you gotta mention Zorn from now on once a show with the reverb up. That had me chuckle at my desk.
