A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Daybreak the Teacher:

@Trouble - college essay advice: you can’t wait until you’re so frustrated with your kid that you explode and demand: do it now! Since it is the summer, structure free / school is out time, you need to both agree to put down your phones for 15 to come up with a short written agreement. X much done by Y point. Repeat until done. Having an written down can be a huge help, but only if you do it together. You can set the terms together (consequences for failure to meet deadlines) so that you both know what the terms are and have agreed. Plus the bonus for your kid is that agreement time isn’t start the essay NOW time. It give them space to shift back into that mode.

Hope this helps!

I've been listening to the audiobook of Charles Stross's "Atrocity Archives." Oddly I've read later books in this series but never this one, which is the first (but most are stand-alones anyway). Passaic River Blues:

@Adrian: is that the Claude Arnaud biography you're talking about it? How is it so far? I almost bought Steigmuller's at a library book sale but I knew it'd probably be two decades before I got to it. I never really thought about Cocteau that much until I read "The Difficulty of Being" and reevaluated.

@Ben Abs: One of the best, although all Didion is good Didion, even the bad.

Is the RadioRethink link for the 128k live stream dumping me to the 32k version instead? The sound quality isn't so hot today. (The 128k AAC link on this page sounds great tho'.)

@Passaic Yes, it is the Arnaud biog. I'm 350 pages in and Radiguet's just died. So it's thorough, I'll give it that…

“…discovered that Serge Gainsbourg's dog died of cirrhosis through licking the bottom of her master's unfinished glasses of booze…” That sounds mighty truthy.

@Adrian: hahaha Damn, Radiguet dead at page 350? It'll be page 950 before you start reading about those movies in the 50s.

@Holland Oats: That was a good one. Seth Hettena's "Trump/Russia" and Luke Harding's "Collusion" also excellent reads on the subject.
