A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

I like paying cash and am disturbed by the cashless trend. I went to a holiday fair recently and considered leaving my credit card at home when switching stuff over to a smaller wallet, decided to bring it and found that the only parking available for the event was payable through a credit-only kiosk. It just seems f-d up that I could have taken the day off work and waited in line to get into the parking lot only to have to leave due to no credit card, even with a wad of cash.

Neanderthal Head:

hunker (v.)

"to squat, crouch," 1720, Scottish, of uncertain origin, possibly a nasalized borrowing of a Scandinavian word such as Old Norse huka "to crouch," hoka, hokra "to crawl." Hunker down, Southern U.S. dialectal phrase, is from 1902, popularized c. 1965; in this use the verb is perhaps from northern British hunker "haunch." Related: Hunkered; hunkering.

Cash is king... There was a NY times article about the same subject recently, seems to block out the poor, or those who's credit is in dispute. Seems there is a corporation somewhere who will lose money on a cash transaction (they make 2% per sale!) so of course the are against it. With a "credit" purchase there is a third commodity beside what is being (1) purchased the fee (2) for the purchase itself there is (3) the INFORMATION about the purchase which, like it or not, becomes a commodity: what you bought/ where you bought it /who bought it

Passaic River Blues:

@JT: I hear you there. Visa and MasterCard charge interchange fees to merchants for the use of credit and debit payment cards (most of the fee goes to the bank that issued the credit or debit card, some goes to Visa/MC, and a small sliver goes to the company that the merchant uses to link into the Visa/MC system). The interchange fees range from ~1.5% for basic credit to 3% for high-end rewards or commercial cards. Cash "costs" merchants money (storage, armored car services, employee theft, etc.) but generally costs way less than credit or debit. Still, some merchants believe savings from not accepting cash outweigh lost sales (and they may be also receiving incentives and/or better rates from networks, but I don't know that). It's a pernicious development to my thinking, leading inevitably to greater dominance by the networks and banks.

Conclusion: I hate banks.

@Patrick, that's just how Visa, AmEx, etc. want it. They push those laws. They don't want their 3% fee passed on to only the customers who pay the fees. So instead, it's buried in the cost of everything at CC-accepting stores, and everybody pays it, including cash payers.

Park Slope Food Co-op used to only accept cash, and checks backed by member deposits (and EBT/food stamps). In the mid-2000's, started accepting pin-based debit cards. Not signature-based debit cards, not credit cards. Pin-based debit has lower bank fees than signature debit, and credit. Ever wonder why the credit card companies run advertisements and promotions to "go ahead and sign when the merchant gives you an option!"? It's because the bank gets a bigger fee if you sign instead of using a pin.

Angelica Kitchen (RIP) in Manhattan never accepted cards in all its years. They had a little diagram in the menu showing the money that would fly away to the bank instead of going to the restaurant, suppliers and farmers.

All these transaction fees just make the banks fatter, and the costs are bourne entirely by the consumers (because merchants have to build the cost into their higher prices). The pitch from the banks to the merchants is that they've so well conditioned consumers to only use cards, that you'll lose so many sales if you don't take cards, you'll lose more than the bank fees. So, the bank propaganda to the consumers combines with the bank propaganda to the merchants, and both lose.

And rewards cards, miles cards, premium cards - every credit card that has extra monetary bonuses to the consumer, just charges higher fees to the merchant when those cards are used.
