A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

In Denver, we had civet cats. Looked like skunks but stank all of the time, not just when they sprayed, which I think they could do. Faced one down early one Sunday morning on my paper route. I froze. It stopped, looked up, turned around... and trotted off. I started breathing again.

The skunk had already sprayed you were clear to leave. Unfortunately for you it was close to the house/apartment.
Even if you startle a skunk just stand still and they will leave when ready. They aren’t normally afraid of humans as long as you aren’t walking towards them. Skunks have no issues with walking towards you. Of course this is when you have no dog with you.
Alas the Deer. Skunks do not care about the deer and Vice Versa. Cats, dogs, coyotes, bears. Those are skunks problems

Itzall ablurr: the closest to a remedy is making a paste of regular strength dawn with baking soda and peroxide. The paste must remain on the dogs skin for a minimum of 10 minutes ( or soak clothes in this solution) rinse the dog and repeat the process . Again in 2 weeks do the same process. It’s 98% effective. My dog has nailed to my dismay 9 skunks. It’s a natural enemy . The 2% negative is when the dog sweats a lot or it is humid outside. Even then you can bathe again as long as it’s not within 2 weeks.

Ironically @Wild Neil I'm old enough to remember when Britain joined the EEC as it was then called. So that generation...who are the older folks now being the ones to mainly vote for Brexit have upset the cart for the younger generation who voted to Remain in biggest numbers.

I'd ask John if that's the same "working class" who "spoke" here in the US after Trump was elected....and where has that got them? Disaster in my opinion.

I have this weird thing about some audio books. Some of the readers are so damned peculiar - like they're one of those text-to-speech simulations - just really weird, unnatural inflection. And I often see that that particular reader not only reads a lot of books, but seems to get high ratings by audio book consumers on say, Amazon.

Scott McDowell's "cheap reggae 45's" segments are maybe the best bet at converting a non-reggae listener.

Roger & Amanda's premium is WFMU DJs reading books. Maybe that kind of audio book will take off.

@zpulpa
Love that segment. Real quality listening.

I almost got my now sightless father an Audible.com membership for Xmas, didn't for some reason, and when I mentioned it to him, he told me that he has the same problem with some audio books.

there are at least 6 WFMU DJ's who I would love to hear read books.

I would pay money to see Ken Freedman read a Philip K Dick book. Clans of the Alphane Moon would be a good one.

I am very excited to get my hands on that premium Ken! (I saw I missed a chance to talk about American policing/intelligence agencies above, I'm a bit sad, but I will restrain myself)

was anyone else not surprised that Zoe isn't guest hosting any other FMU shows this marathon?

I am still not used to my own voice, even though I can make it work. I think if I was going to do an audiobook, the only appropriate subject would be the history of the Muppets or something.

@ Wild Neil - you're a hardcore PKD fan! wow.

is there somewhere online where the premiums can be viewed?

IIRC Dave Hill mentioned that narrating his own book was really really difficult. Apparently it's much harder than you'd expect for most people.

@Sphere-actually, I have only read maybe six or eight books by PKD. His IDEAS are great, but the writing can be difficult going sometimes. Heinlein is easier to read-but has his issues. Neal Stephenson is a favorite. Read Cryptonomicon if you get a chance.

I took a 'how to write and read news copy for radio' class and couldn't get the hang of the roller coastery delivery style. It was really difficult. Having to accent certain verbs, etc.
