A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

My favorite college radio story was when the program director, who was a friend of mine, threatened to name my show for me if I didn't send her my show description. I missed the deadline, so she put me down for "CHILLIN' WITH THE BROS." I ran with it, and did my show for an entire semester as a fictional fratboy character (while still playing stuff like Sun Ra and Throbbing Gristle). Good times.

I was a DJ at the long-lost WMNJ in Madison, NJ. 10 watts of throbbing music power! WFMU had a better signal in some of the dorms than we ourselves did, and the WFMU DJs had much better taste (WMNJ just let any student in and play anything, so there was too much Doors, Motown, Dave Matthews, and Billy Joel -- though Sugarwolf was there and played good stuff), so I usually listened to WFMU instead.

@Linda If it makes you feel better, I think most kids in the not-disgustingly afluent parts of NYC learn about the revanchinism, and the fact that NYC is the city on the hill and exemplar for the militarization of America and the police either by direct exposure to it, or through education....Though you do have things like the Colony in Brooklynn where people proudly toute their violence racist nonsense. That narrative though certainly haunts our culture as a propt, and even people who know better like to toute it. I remember people upstate/the rich schmucks I was exposed to being really disparaging and condesending because I lived in Harlem with my family. The gentrification of my neighborhood only started much later, and they are taking full advantage of the Columbia kids to basically have people constantly moving in and out (since you can jack up the rent even if its rent controlled every time someone moves out). Its a shame
