Hey, all! Can anyone ID today's mystery LP under the cassettes? It's pretty much brand new -- was released 11 days ago!
  12:01pm
Dean:

Chris & Cosey Perform Linda Rondstadt's Greatest Hits?
Avatar 12:02pm
Tony Coulter:

So close, Dean. But the judges say we'll have to disqualify that answer.
  12:02pm
Dean:

Er, Ronstadt's...

Thiss must be the place. Greets, Tony, Dean. Along for the cavalcade of cassette curiosities.

You say today's Tapes have actual songs on them? I may have to decamp to Sheena!

chresti at work:

Can I guess without seeing the image?

Tony Coulter:

Hiya, James and Henry!!
Avatar 12:07pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Chresti: Of course! You'll probably guess if right away, via ESP.
Avatar 12:08pm
Tony Coulter:

Oh: the cassette on now is the one on top in the pic, with the cat on the cover.
Avatar 12:10pm
Tony Coulter:

Oh, also: DiMuro principally plays guitars and keyboards.

Jason! I've been fine and dandy -- how 'bout you? We miss you on the airwaves!

Oh, I actually re-started a few weeks ago on the Sheena Stream!

Webhamster Henry:

Actually this is not so bad - I'm sticking around! It has a real cassette culture vibe!
Avatar 12:23pm
Tony Coulter:

So no one knows what today's mystery LP is? I'll give it 5 more minutes, before doing the big reveal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm
Rich in Washington:

Hellos everybodeez!
Avatar 12:27pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Webhamster Henry: Well, Dino DiMuro definitely was in the thick of the U.S. cassette culture thingee -- it's just that he was sort of an outlier, in that he wrote '70-influenced songs with guitar solos and such.
Avatar 12:29pm
Tony Coulter:

Rich!! Heya!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm
Rich in Washington:

Don't get worked up over this week's mystery LP! It's not worth killing yourself over! Do the math!
Avatar 12:30pm

Ha! Rich obviously knows what it is. Two more minutes before the game is over. Don't miss out on today's big prizes!

What? I do?

Hiya! I am not good with figures but I think I figured out what the LP is

Greetings, Yvang! Do tell!

ORLY!!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:34pm
Yvang:

So this should be a new release of old material from Algebra Suicide, no?
Avatar 12:36pm
Tony Coulter:

Exactamento! It's this brand new comp: www.discogs.com...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:38pm
Yvang:

A very fine band, these Algebra Suicide.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:39pm
Yvang:

They brought the algebra that Martin Rev and Alan Vega missed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm
Rich in Washington:

I'll bet Jandek is mad he just didn't add a T to Units.
Avatar 12:42pm
Tony Coulter:

Ha!
Avatar 12:45pm
Tony Coulter:

By the way, that thing that looks like a hairclip above the eye of the longhaired member of the Unitts is actually a random piece of schmutz that was lying on top of the cassette shell when I took the photo. Didn't notice it then. Damn you schmutz!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:48pm
Yvang:

You like Tape Hiss? You will love Tape Schmutz!
Avatar 12:48pm
Tony Coulter:

Ha ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm
Sem:

Just the right amount of cowbell on this.
Avatar 12:55pm
Jason Elbogen:

I missed you introducing the UnitTs, Tony. Did they add the extra T because of 'The Units' (SF band)?
Avatar 12:55pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Jason: That was Rich's theory -- but it's a good guess! I have no idea....
Avatar 1:11pm
Tony Coulter:

I'd bet good money the longhaired guy is the Unitts' lead guitarist.
Avatar 1:14pm
Tony Coulter:

I'm sure you can all guess which tape this is in the playlist pic

Tony Coulter:

Snoutburger, I mean.....

Great art! very Terry Monty Python Gilliamish.
Avatar 1:17pm
Tony Coulter:

Yes, it is an amazing cover!
Avatar 1:32pm
Tony Coulter:

A point of nerd interest: None of today's cassettes are on discogs.
Avatar 1:33pm
Tony Coulter:

(and only one is on Rate Your Music)
Avatar 1:38pm
Jason Elbogen:

Does that make today's tapes 'unknown'? I have had an ongoing (good-natured) argument with an Ebay seller I'm friends with (maybe you know him--kolo1), who liked to use the word 'unknown' to describe some of the lp's he was selling. I guess I was being 'literal', but I tried to explain to him that the second he put the lp up on EBAY, it was no longer 'unknown'. You know, by definition. After several years of this--and after many other ebayers started using 'unknown' to describe their records--he changed to them more accurage 'undocumented'.
Avatar 1:40pm
Tony Coulter:

Maybe today's tapes are unknown until they get played? So, one and a half are still unknown.
  1:40pm
Dean:

What happened to "scarce" or "rare"?
  1:41pm
Dean:

Or "unique," if that is in fact the case?
Avatar 1:42pm
Jason Elbogen:

The answer is unknowable.
Avatar 1:43pm
Tony Coulter:

Or well done?
  1:43pm
Dean:

"This tape is bloody."
Avatar 1:46pm
Tony Coulter:

Please ask the chef to cook it for a few more minutes.
Avatar 1:52pm
Tony Coulter:

"a real Ken Clinger reality" www.discogs.com...
Avatar 1:53pm
Tony Coulter:

(a little cassette culture/home taper inside reference there, on D.D.'s part)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm
Sem:

Dug all the foregoing, thanks, TC.
Avatar 1:58pm
Tony Coulter:

Glad to hear it, Sem! I am currently working on rounding up more Dino DiMuro tapes -- no doubt some will make an appearance on a future Tape Hiss
Avatar 1:59pm
Tony Coulter:

The cassette on now is the one with the woman on the cover

Avatar 2:43pm
Tony Coulter:

With his wanger on view?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:43pm
Yvang:

Is the cassette really from 86? I just found a blurb saying they formed in 1992...
  2:44pm
Dean:

I have a 26CD box of recorder recitals, on the order of 33 hours of solo and accompanied recorder virtuosity. Somehow, these guys didn't make the cut.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:45pm
Yvang:

Okay the blurb is wrong as they also mention Suzy Sparkles from 1986
Avatar 2:46pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Yvang: Absolutely, yes, this tape is from '86. Where are you looking, btw?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:47pm
Yvang:

It's on the internet archive : archive.org...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:48pm
Yvang:

It says "Pat 'n Mike & James was formed on the vernal equinox in 1992"
Avatar 2:49pm
Tony Coulter:

Thanks!

Maybe that's supposed to read "formed ... in 1982"?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:50pm
Yvang:

Yes : probably a typo!

Thanks for the plays! Quite exciting! I'm currently uploading as much of my catalogue that still plays on Bandcamp. Missing masters and covers all over the place, but not the two you have here.
