I wouldn't pay $10 for a download of it, tho -- you can still get the CD for less than that. I paid $2 for my (used) copy, a few weeks ago.

The aforementioned Fred Chalenor, bassist, was in the wonderful PDX band Caveman Shoestore. He also did a wonderful album with Elliot Sharpe and fellow Portlander Henry Franzoni.

I might even be playing 8-tracks on my show if one of my cats hadn't ruined my 8-track player by spraying it while it was turned on. Guess I'll have to leave the 8-tracks to Fabio.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm
Rich in Washington:

Love cats, but sometimes it's difficult to live with them. I've got one cat who loves bursting ito the studio and scratches up all the spines in one particular section of my record shelves.
Avatar 1:48pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: Actually, that pissing incident happened years ago. I've long since thrown that player out (only cost me $10 or so at the Goodwill, so no huge loss.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm
Rich in Washington:

speaking of 8-tracks - I nearly bought an old-school cart machine, the type you'd see in radio stations back in the day.
Avatar 1:51pm
Tony Coulter:

I've got big white anti-scratching/spraying screens in front of my record shelves. Looks like a photo shoot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm
Rich in Washington:

My wife's trying to get me to build record shelves that go up the wall, rather than across the floor. The older I get and the worse my aging back gets, the more I am warming to that idea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm
uurff∅:

i got an 8-track player/recorder via ebay a few years ago for $65.
it came with the power cord cut off but the post said it'd work with a new cord.
it would not record on both channels and the one sounded like shit, so i contacted the guy and he tried to get me to take a refund of like 20 bucks or something. our correspondence went back and forth and stalled at him refunding me $30. so he wouldn't lose out because of shipping. i was about willing to settle for it, thinking maybe i can fix it, when ebay (who monitors all correspondence) took the full amount from his paypal account and put it in mine, without saying anything to either of us about it.
then i fixed it.

Sem:

Rich, reminded of the year in the mid-70s I hired onto a radio station dipping a toe into automation. Their cart machine had ~ 300 slots, and was run by a very rudimentary computer running a stone age program, i.e., " Play carts #
xx,#xc,#xb, then, (from the advertising carts) Play...". The on-air guy had a single turntable, a mike, the log, and a clock.
Always wanted that giant cart machine...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm
uurff∅:

do i hear a mellotron in there?
...i'm listening via laptop speakers with a dying clothes washer squeeling not far enough in the background
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm
uurff∅:

or, just an organ...
Avatar 2:08pm
Tony Coulter:

Yeah, think it is an organ....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm
Rich in Washington:

I just missed the cart machine era at KBOO, but they had this weird standalone hardware recorder/player/playout machine with hundreds of files. I used to record this 'community calendar' type spot every week and I'd have to transfer it from one machine to the air room machine. It was weird. But what was cool is that it had hundreds of station IDs and special 'spots' going back to the early 70s - some of them by famous people.
It was eventually replaced by someone's handrolled computer application, somewhat affectionately known as The Boo Player.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm
uurff∅:

(sounds great anyway)
  2:11pm
RRH:

A little to nostalgic for me/8 tracks a pain & sound bad to boot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm
uurff∅:

i generally don't listen to 8-track, just use 'em for recording.
-once they've been tuned-up with new felt/foam and new foil/splice tape they're quite dependable.
...have to adjust the heads on the machine now & then, but that's easy.
Avatar 2:23pm
Tony Coulter:

There is one really "collectable" (i.e., rare and expensive) 8-track-only release (by Ya Ho Wa 13, recording as Fire, Water, Air): www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm
coelacanth∅:

another artist released an album on 8-track not long ago too; i don't think ONLY 8-track though.
can't think of who, but i really wanted it.
too expensive.
Avatar 2:27pm
Tony Coulter:

Interesting: the Korean title of this San Ul Lim track is somehow preventing a clicky star from appearing.

@Tony Re clicky star That happened to me too when I used only Chinese characters or Japanese on playlist! After I added something in alphabet, the stars appeared.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm
coelacanth∅:

has to have at least one "english" alphabet letter (character?) in it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm
coelacanth∅:

hi Mayuko! do you know, can you get a star to appear by adding something like (?) ?
Avatar 2:34pm

@coelacanth∅ you're right, one English letter should do that. Probably ? would do too.
