Independent releases BENEFIT from being freely shared, because people are basically good, and want to give money to artists whose work they like.
Once upon a time, I was able to do polling within a closed, trusted community of over 20,000 torrenters. . . and 83% of them said they still bought CDs and DVDs even though they knew how to get whatever they wanted for free.

If you hate me and that makes you feel glee, then enjoy it. I'm not proud of my situation and don't like airing it about, but it's the truth and it's why I don't have a pledge icon.

On the other hand, sharing stuff around means more people get exposed to it, and those who love it are mostly -- 83%, anyway -- then willing to go out and buy a copy of it. Further polling revealed that they do this because they like to support artists, and because they like having tangibles like the art that comes in a CD or DVD jewel case.
The picture of torrenters as evil thieves is utterly false.
I already mentioned THE MAN FROM EARTH; other indie releases have benefited greatly from filesharing as well. Corey Doctorow releases all his novels as free torrents before they come out in paperback, because when he had no audience, he did that as an experiment with his first novel, and BECAUSE PEOPLE LIKED IT (an important point), he sold a ton more than he expected when it came out as a physical book.

I live in the small, provincial town of Brooklyn and get pretty much all of my news and current events from WFMU.
Motis:
Those small jazz labels you want to support would BENEFIT from putting out authorized torrents, and including a text file telling people how to pay for the music. . . but a lot of people who can't or won't buy it will download it, which is fine, and anyone who downloads it and doesn't think it's good isn't going to pay for it, which is also fine.

One nice thing about vinyl is that it is well-suited to preserve music through long periods during which it is out of vogue, for later discovery by new generations.

I need to live in the world of TV beer, where you just have to order "beer" and then you are served it. If it's in a can that just says "BEER," so much the better.
I'd like to fall asleep again, John!

@ParUbi, I have not spent as much time as I'd like in Pittsburgh, but I have only ever had good times there, and I find it beautiful. Hope to get out there at some point this spring for some urban canoeing.

One day in China, I ambled into an electronics store and saw shelf after shelf laden with SONY equipment, which baffled me at first, because SONY is a Japanese brand, and why would the Chinese import all that expensive stuff when they make so much of their own? Then I took a closer look and saw that the SONY logo, while otherwise perfect, actually said SQNY.

Back in the '80s, I saw WALL OF VOODOO play at a theater in Hollywood on Vine, just north of Hollywood Blvd. . . and the week before the show, I picked up some day labor painting the stage black. As I was leaving, I ran into some guy walking the other way up the street, and he looked familiar to me in that way of someone from the music scene you've seen around but never formally met. I said 'hi' and told him he could pick up some good day labor at the theater I had just come out of; he gave me an amused look and thanked me.
I walked down the street and around the corner and realized that I didn't know him from around the music scene; he was Harry Dean Stanton.

When I got out in the world and started traveling a lot, I noticed the differences in other States, where they have "off-licenses" and "package stores" and so on, and in some places, a "liquor store" was JUST liquor.
