I really enjoyed the two marathon weeks (which is a testament to WFMU that they even can make pledge begging extremely entertaining), but I have to admit that I'm also glad that we are back to normal ... (at least when it comes to the radio program)
@Zivilars: According to Station Manager Kevan, programming at WFMU will be altered as many self-quarantine and such during this Coronavirus period. What that means exactly, I don’t know. But it stems that more fill ins and prerecorded shows will be happening.
@JakeGould: That sucks – hope the consequences for WFMU's broadcasting will stay as minimal as possible ... It's crazy what we are experiencing right now with the virus, who would have thought of these dimensions two or three weeks ago ... :(
9:23am
JakeGould:
“This Coronavirus period…” Wow that sounds weird. I’m not using the word “quarantine” because that implies forced isolation by the government.
9:24am
djsheilab:
I’m finding this opening set so hugely comforting + beautiful. Thank you Joe and good morning to you + everyone!
Good morning, Joe and pals. I trust everyone at the station has been documenting their operating procedures so backup personnel can effectively run the station if the regular staff cannot get to the building. Including care and feeding schedules for the Yips.
by the way, does anybody know who won the time slot on WFMU yesterday in the great finale?? maybe those things were done before in the past, but i found this a VERY cool idea and a regular time slot on WFMU (or one of the others streaming channels) as a "wildcard" for a listener getting a chance to do his own show sound like such a great idea with lots of inspiring potential!
Hey Sheiila, everybody! Glad you're enjoying the beautiful sounds of Brazil this morning (and beyond)!
9:27am
JakeGould:
@Zivilars: Weird indeed. And remember many DJs have day jobs that have suddenly disappeared or were put on hold. So economics of sudden lack of income for the next 4 weeks come into play. Also NYC public schools will be closed until April 20 and kids don’t take care of themselves! This mess is really a big lesson in economics and how one thing connects to another.
It was fun to catch the encore of "Don't Touch Me There" last night, Joe & Sheila. What fun! And a reminder of what not to do during the social distancing era.
Charlie Byrd was a brilliant six stringer.
Was there a demanding guitar teacher that made you learn Blue Bossa in YOUR past, JM?
9:30am
JakeGould:
@duke: The thing with events like 9-11 and Hurricane Sandy is they are clear events with some kind of idea when things end. This whole Coronavirus mess has no clear end. I mean we can’t even have everyone tested even those with symptoms.
@JakeGould: I'm sure many people STILL don't have a real idea what this virus thing will mean for their life in the near future, even after this weekend. The damage is done, from the economical point of view. There will come better times again, but for the foreseeable future, I'm am SO afraid when it comes to our jobs and the money in our pockets. (People staying safe is and stays the most important thing, though, of course, whatever needs to be done!)
OK, pals, we are gonna check out of this Jersey City pop stand and head back across the rivers (and get our dog!) and go home. Will check back in with all you fine people at first opportunity.
I went into Manhattan and visited the newsstand guy near where I work. He’s worried but resigned to reality: He only sold $6 worth of stuff on Saturday in the middle on Greenwich Village.
@TLM, my dad was in the Army in 1960, stuck on a base in the midwest and miserable -- one of the only bright spots was when he mail-ordered Charlie Byrd's "Blues for Night People."
I was supposed to see the Wild Irish Roses near New Paltz yesterday, but decided not to take the chance. Joe, hearing them live on your show a few weeks ago really made me love them! How did you fit everybody in one place?!
I know y'all are disappointed about the current marathon total, but think about it: how many independent enterprises have a following dedicated enough to get it this close in the midst of a pandemic?
Happy to hear it, Karen! Thanks for all you do and have done for the station. That goes for all you volunteers out there and listeners. I'll thank some of you later on, but I want to play music and not talk so much.
was just thinking the same thin, andrew. bummed about their tour but, on the bright side for me at least, i might be able to make it to one once they are rescheduled. couldn't make the nyc date even before everything hit the fan.
I like Duckduckgo, but FYI if you prefer a private search engine with a more serious-sounding name (because... reasons), there's also Startpage: www.startpage.com
i need to use the quarantine time to learn steel drum

Pledging - there is a structural flaw in the pledging system and the distribution of thanks... I listen to Joe, Clay and many djs everweek but did not pledge because I use my Mouse to soak Andy (2 x the $$$). I always feel terrible when a DJ I listen to does not meet their goal, but that still seems like a wi$$$$e move for FMU>>>
Thanks Joe and all..$$$$ cannot always express the love felt!!
@morphe: I‘m also unsure how to pledge correctly ... Feels so bad to leave a DJ / show out I like :) Thinking about becoming swag for life next year for $41 a month, but you can only choose 25 shows max online ... Together with Ichiban, Drummer and Sheena's Jungle Room I STILL leave about 3-5 shows out I want to show my dedication to – always become frightened when it comes to the very special interest shows that WFMU needs the "proof" to see that enough people love them :)
@ziv, nothing wrong w/that! IMHO the alternate-stream shows and late-night shows are the most neglected. Especially if you like weekend late-night shows like Nowhere Places (one of my faves). Daytime shows on the main stream get a fair amount of love already.
My media player skipped over to the Ichiban stream. It was playing a trailer.
10:29am
morphe':
Pledging - as a long term Vol... There is discomfort sometimes for some DJs regarding who earned what... I agree that it all goes to the same place and so all should be grateful regardless of which window the $$$$$ blew in...
@Toothgrinder Tom ...no kidding, eh? I'd just started watching a movie on Friday night and the power went out. I kind of expected to look on the internet and discover some more awful national news. Turned out to be a tree had fallen on power lines.
@Ike: That's my thinking, too! As much as I love e.g. "Wake", I know that Clay already is popular enough to get enough pledges, so when in doubt and budget, I would give my pledge to some more obscure Drummer / Ichiban / Jungle Room show I love (pledging for Clay, too, though, cause I love him and his energy). But as already pointed out, we probably don't need to make too much of a science of it and I believe that at WFMU, of all station, no great, interesting show was kicked because it raised too less pledges and therefore seems to be too commercially unpopular ... :)
10:33am
Bill W:
"Go onto the YouTube" sounded rather avuncular, Joe.
I just try to pledge when I can listen, and to DJs I've appreciated over the years. Sometimes I pledge because I'm enjoying a show and things are going slow.
As I'm forced to hunker down in my bunker and compose my manifesto, I'll be listening to WFMU non-stop! Seriously, it is so great to have the WFMU "community" during this time.
It's this time of the week again when Joes plays such rare gems that I can't simply find and add them on Spotify, but have to hunt them down physically for my collection .. :)
@wickedmountain - not necessarily a dedicated show but a lot of DJs swim in those waters. Check out set past setlists in the archives to see what matches up with you. Maybe start with JA in the AM, Avant Ghetto or some of the late night shows.
@wickedmountain, try Tony Coulter on the Drummer Stream, Tuesdays.
11:07am
?:
@wickedmountain -- I'll second @tim from champaign's suggestion to search the WFMU archives and see what you like. And if you're looking for a great show that's heavy on the prog and early metal, try Witches Brew on WTJU.net. They keep archives of the last two weeks of shows, over there. Wicked Sharkie is the goddess.
Just announced in NJ: “New Jerseyans should not leave their homes from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., as Gov. Phil Murphy announced an extraordinary action of recommending a statewide curfew for his 9 million residents to attempt to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.
All casinos, restaurants, bars, movie theaters and gyms must shut down at 8 p.m. and will remain closed until further notice in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut, the three governors announced Monday.”
I saw Michael McKean in a production of Harold Pinter's The Homecoming on Broadway more than ten years. He is a remarkably versatile actor, songwriter and musician.
About 15 years ago I was in a record store in Detroit. There was this insufferable hipster yammering away at the clerk who was very patient. After about ten minutes the clerk very casually put on the Lenny and the Squigtones album. The hipster stopped mid-sentence, seemed really confused, then left the store. It was a moment of brilliance.
Off to fill out paperwork for the new job, then I have to find a new place to live. I love the timing of all this. No curfew down here, but park closures, and reduced hours for my friends in the service industry are killing them.
I saw Michael Mc two years ago in The True. Love me some MM.

The reality is the U.S. government run by Drumpf only believes in extreme measures and but force. Nothing proactive. Utterly all of what is happening right now could have been lessened if Drumpf and his gang of idiots took real proactive measures. Instead they engage in brutal brinksmanship so this how we live now.
Also, I would discourage conspiracy theories. The reality is sad enough. This is just sheer incompetence writ large. There is no subtext; these people are jerks.
Also the CDC has recommended no large gatherings of 50+ people for the next 8 weeks. So for those who care, the weekly licking parties are cancelled for now. www.cdc.gov...

Though a violation, it is ok to walk around in the neighborhood. No police stop/check yet.Carry a shopping bag and say "I am going shopping" or say "I am picking up my son Or going to my house from work or leaving my child with his Ma/Da or taking the

I really wished there was a permanent WFMU studio cam stream, though – but I can understand if some/most DJs wouldn't like that ... :) Seeing DJ Stashu live on her marathon shows with video is a lot of fun though!
@morphe': Exactly. Going outside to just sit, walk around the block or even a park is fine as long as you don’t touch people or lick them and keep a safe distance. We’re not under lockdown (yet?) so get some of that spring sun; going stir crazy helps nobody.
FWIW, I hear that adult live streaming (aka: Cam Girls) are raking it in now that people are cooped up at home. So maybe WFMU could have a live DJ stream with tips?
Sounds crazy but hey… Lots of ladies are paying their way through college right now!
@JakeGould : note that there are many other purported lists of the 100 or 250 or whatever Greatest Kung-Fu Movies of All Time. They are all incorrect. The list I posted (not my work!) is the correct one.
Ziv - Radio 3 Spain(alt music/literary stuff) has the cam - I never really watch it.
Jake - Madrid is on lockdown so "need a purpose." I carry the shopping bag and my son's ID and a letter from city hall showing my address. Can walk in the direction of any shop and fudge it. The parks are sealed with crime scene tape...
@JakeGould: It was a very bold choice to put "The Five Deadly Venoms" at #1. I love this movie. "The 36th Chamber of Shaolin" is #2, I watched that one (again) last night.
@coel the secret is to read "the news" on twitter for hours on end so you don't miss the instagram notifications. oh, also you can find their radio free europe on this archive link... (audio only)
Speaking of baking -- recommend getting a couple bags of flour and packets of yeast, bake your own bread. It's a little late to get a cow and a chicken for your dairy
Here in France the French folks are all taking it in stride They closed the bars restaurants cafes They went to the parks
They closed the parks today The sun is shining
