	10:19am Linda Lee: @TDK60 ~ missed that miff earlier but i'm with you. horribly sloppy reporting now on many fronts. we're clearly getting dumber, as a nation. no secret there. the reasons why are complex but it is true that we learn from what we read & hear via media. doesn't bode well.
	10:19am NotARealDoctor: It's very funny when we visit with my mother's family. We all still live in her hometown and so do all of her siblings and parents. Every single one of them has the same local accent except for her.

	10:21am NotARealDoctor: My mother was so embarrassed at being called out for her accent when she spent a semester at Vassar that she quickly changed all her pronunciations. But then I got it back from all my friends and classmates using that accent.

	10:21am Walt: @steveo - specifically knitting. If you let the yarn slip when you are making a stitch, it can "drop" and cause a column of stitches to unravel; you then have to get a crochet hook and "pick up" (i.e. loop back together) all of the dropped stitches.

	10:38am BronwynB: my father's whole family are appalachian coal miners from the mountains of WV. when i first saw the movie "matewan" there's a part when the more "normal" mining townspeople are having trouble with their coal bosses and these crazy hill people show up with rifles to save the day and then retreat back to the mountains. my mom said "those are your people!"

	10:39am The Oscar: My dad was born in Texas and his family moved to Virginia and Minnesota before settling in Massachusetts. We've had LONG conversations trying to unpack the pronunciation of many different words.
	10:39am Walt: In the South in the 1960s, the most common African American pronunciation of "orange" I heard was "ernge."

	10:53am melinda: Quebecois French sounds crisper to me than France French. Like Mexican Spanish vs. Spain Spanish, as if they underwent similar changes being in North America.

	10:55am NotARealDoctor: If I'm right, you almost don't pronounce the first "Z" in your first name, but you almost do pronounce it. I don't know how to write that phonetically. Your last name is something like Brzez-chi-kay-vitch with that same "Z" that you almost don't pronounce but you still do kind of.

	10:58am melinda: I don't speak French except for a smattering of words, so clarity isn't an issue for me, I just notice the differing sounds. Their spoken English is quite different too.

	10:58am NotARealDoctor: I have a BA in Classical Studies and as part of that I had to take classes in linguistics, it really helps with pronunciations of foreign words.

	10:21am Walt: @steveo - specifically knitting. If you let the yarn slip when you are making a stitch, it can "drop" and cause a column of stitches to unravel; you then have to get a crochet hook and "pick up" (i.e. loop back together) all of the dropped stitches.
